Dan Hudson (torn ulnar collateral ligament in right elbow) is pretty much done for the rest of the season (and at least half of the next one). The Snakes banished Collmenter to the bullpen, but they need him to re-enter the rotation because they're running out of legit options to fill in. Collmenter has been outstanding since becoming a reliever this season, however; in 26 2/3 innings, he's posted a 1.35 ERA, a 2.36 BB/9 and an 8.44 K/9. Last week, he made a spot start (four innings, three hits, one run, three walks, six strikeouts) in place of Joe Saunders (left shoulder inflammation). The righty's relief stint includes four other appearances of at least three frames. Left-handed batters have still been more troublesome to Collmenter this season, so his return to the rotation, for however long it'll be, isn't a lock to be as rosy as his debut stretch in 2011 was. However, he's credited the rediscovery of his mechanics for his rebound in relief, and the results have backed him up. It's not time to go all-in on Collmenter just yet. But there's no telling how long they'll need him, and he's in a much better position to succeed this time around. By the way, Trevor Bauer is here to stay. 10-tm mixed: Pass Martin Perez, P, Texas Rangers Yesterday, Tim had the perfect write-up on Perez's speculative appeal all done. Then, the Rangers announced that he'd be used strictly as a reliever. Turns out, the club is considering him for a start this weekend against the Oakland Athletics. Hello: That's a tasty matchup. I can't do Tim's blurb justice, so here it is in a nutshell: He's incredibly talented, and in the past few weeks, he's incorporated some changes that have worked extremely well for him at Triple-A Round Rock. Just in case. You don't want to miss out, do you? 10-tm mixed: Pass Adam Warren, SP, New York Yankees Today, KFFL prospect hound Chris Hadorn gave roto players the lowdown on Warren. It's clear that the right-hander doesn't have a ton of upside, but he may be able to hold his own for a little while. That's what the Bronx Bombers hope. Andy Pettitte (fractured left ankle) will be out for at least six and probably eight weeks. CC Sabathia (strained left groin) is out for a couple of weeks, too. If Warren performs better than Freddy Garcia does before the All-Star break arrives, perhaps the Yanks move Garcia back to the bullpen instead of demoting Warren. 10-tm mixed: Pass Dallas Keuchel, SP, Houston Astros The Astros will go with a six-man rotation, at least through the break, says their manager, Bradley Mills. Keuchel (1-0, 1.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP in 14 innings) has been better than Houston could ever have expected when he replaced Bud Norris (sprained left knee), who's scheduled to return from the DL this Friday. It's kind of cool that the organization wants to reward the 24-year-old left-hander. Maybe it's a trial to see if he'll be a capable fill-in for Wandy Rodriguez, who's on the block. But there's virtually nothing about Keuchel's resume that suggests he'll continue to perform anywhere remotely close to the way has to begin his MLB career. Caveat emptor. 10-tm mixed: Pass Edwar Cabrera, SP, Colorado Rockies Chris also discussed Cabrera's outlook now that the parent club has called upon him. Judging from the 75-pitch restraint, his lack of experience and polish, and Colorado's potential replacements in the near future, this isn't looking like a good fantasy prospect for this season. 10-tm mixed: Pass |
