Summary

The Saints didn't cause as many turnovers or get after the quarterback like previous seasons. They had just nine interceptions, which was one of the lowest totals in the league. And New Orleans had just 33 sacks, which is another concern. This unit should be a little more discipline with Steve Spagnuolo taking over as defensive coordinator. He has a reputation for getting sacks and turnovers but won't play the reckless style of former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The big concern for the Saints is pass defense. Jabari Greer can be shut down but after him, the Saints are a bit thin. Teams had success throwing the ball against the Saints at a huge clip last season as the team ranked 30th against the pass. The special teams are very good for the Saints with Darren Sproles handling the return duties. You won't find a much better return man in the NFL than Sproles.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
We expect this unit to rebound this season even with all the turmoil surrounding them. Spagnuolo should be able to get some sacks and turnovers for this group, which has some talent. They'll be worth using as a low-end No. 1 or spot starter for fantasy teams.

New Orleans Saints LB Will Smith lined up at outside linebacker for the first time as the team transitions to a 3-4 defense during OTAs Monday, May 20. 'That's where we'll start him,' head coach Sean Payton said, noting that outside linebackers often play pass-rushing roles in a 3-4 scheme. 'We can play him right and left, but I think initially that right outside position would be very similar to what he's played for us in the past.' LB Jonathan Vilma is expected to be one of the two middle linebackers in their new defense.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said he envisions DE Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma and SS Roman Harper being on the team next season but understands roster moves could be made during the offseason. 'First off, I do envision those guys in a Saints uniform, and yet I'm also realistic and understand that every year since the beginning of free agency the percentage of players on your roster that turns over is different than it used to be,' Payton said.

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith said he expects to be with the team next season and believes he will be able to fit in the 3-4 defensive alignment. 'Yeah, like I've said before part of the defensive scheme we had before was some sort of 3-4 anyway, that's what we've been doing,' Smith said. 'In my mind it's nothing I'm not used to so I'm not worried about it.'
