Summary

It might be hard to believe but the Texans were a dominate defense last season, ranking second overall. They were third against the pass and fourth against the run. This unit did it all as the team took a big step forward. It might be hard for the team to repeat last season, especially with Mario Williams gone, but they still have plenty of talent in place and should do well. The secondary is very good with cornerback Jonathan Joseph leading the way. And the linebackers do a great job for the Texans, including Brian Cushing and Bradie James - two young players on the rise. The pass rush is a bit of a concern with Williams gone but Antonio Smith and J.J. Watt should provide some nice sack totals for the team. The special teams have potential with Daniel Manning as their kick return man. He has a history of some big returns and rookie Keshawn Martin should get his chances as punt returner, filling the void left by Jacoby Jones.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
The Texans will have a hard time matching last season but should be considered a fantasy starter. They have sack and interception potential while limiting yards and points. Houston is the real deal defensively. Last season wasn't a fluke.

The Houston Texans are considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season, and head coach Gary Kubiak feels the team should embrace the expectations. 'We're trying to get our team as good as we can get it,' Kubiak said. 'I appreciate the fact that people are saying a lot of good things about us. I said earlier (in camp) that I think we're going to have a good team. But we want to be great, but we've got some work to do. We've got some new faces that have to step up. We just need to stay focused on us. We can't stay focused on what's going to happen in January.'

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said the offseason has been a difficult one for the team. During free agency, the Texans lost LB Mario Williams to the Buffalo Bills, OG Mike Brisiel to the Oakland Raiders, CB Jason Allen to the Cincinnati Bengals and TE Joel Dreessen to the Denver Broncos. They traded LB DeMeco Ryans to the Philadelphia Eagles. The team also waived OT Eric Winston, FB Lawrence Vickers and QB Matt Leinart to get under the salary cap. Winston then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and Vickers with the Dallas Cowboys. 'Obviously, it's been a difficult 10 days,' Kubiak said. 'We've lost some key players who are tremendous people and leaders. They played a big part in our building process. It's going to be difficult to replace them, but obviously we have to move on and other players have to step up.'

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said his team is motivated by being the underdog in the NFL playoffs. 'I think a lot of people have said there are a lot of things we can't do. We've had to go to work and try to prove them wrong, so to speak,' Kubiak said. 'That's been part of our motivation and we'll continue to be that.'

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday, Oct. 31, he is not concerned over accusations by opponents that his team plays dirty. 'It doesn't bother me,' Kubiak said. 'We're going to put 46 guys out there and play as hard as we can play. Other than that, I've got no comment on it.' Most of the complaints about cut blocking come from defensive linemen who are usually the victims. The Texans will not change the way they play, including that key component of their running game that opponents loathe. 'It's just part of what we do,' Kubiak said about cut blocking. 'We think to be good at running the football, you've got to do the little things in the run game, especially on the back side that create space for your players.'
