Notes
The Pittsburgh Steelers did not make the playoffs this season with an 8-8 record, the team's worst record in the past six years; however, owner Art Rooney II gave a vote of confidence to head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Todd Haley. 'I think Mike did a good job,' Rooney said. 'I certainly still have a high level of confidence in Mike. I know he is working as hard as he can already, just to figure out how we can get back on the right track.' As for Haley, the owner said the offense functioned at a pretty high level and was hurt by the absence of QB Ben Roethlisberger due to injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said there have been too many penalties on special teams this season and issued a warning Tuesday, Oct. 23, to repeat offenders. 'To be quite honest with you, the multiple offenders and egregious offenders are going to be watching as opposed to playing as soon as we get some options as to who plays and who doesn't,' Tomlin said. 'Right now, with injuries, we have minimal options.' CB DeMarcus Van Dyke, in particular, has three holding penalties in the past two games, plus an earlier penalty for going out of bounds while playing a punt.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said restricted free-agent WR Mike Wallace should be signed and in camp. 'Obviously, we have a desire for him to be here,' Tomlin said. 'We want him to be part of this thing, both short-term and long-term. We've been in negotiations with him. He's not here today. That's unfortunate for him ... I want the player here. One thing experience has taught me is this is bigger than all of us. It's bigger than Mike, it's bigger than me. So I mean that when I say it's unfortunate for him that he's not here.' Wallace has refused to sign the Steelers' $2.472 million restricted free-agent tender.

'I think the bottom line is, Mike was comfortable that's who he wanted to come in,' Rooney said. 'It may be fair to say that when he started the discussions and Todd's name was on his original list, I don't think he expected that Todd was the guy he was going to wind up hiring. But as he had more conversations with him, he became more comfortable that he was the right guy for the job.'

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians might not be back in 2012. He is in the final year of his contract, and it is unclear if he is retiring or not having his contract renewed. Arians was told by head coach Mike Tomlin last week that he would return in 2012, and Tomlin reiterated that at the press conference after the playoff loss to the Denver Broncos. However, team president Art Rooney II indicated Tuesday, Jan. 17, that some members of the coaching staff are considering retirement.
