Schmitt didn't get many chances his rookie season (11 touches), but did a good job of serving as their lead blocker most games. A similar role for '09 seems very likely. Schmitt is a solid blocker and does a good job of catching passes out of the backfield. Schmitt isn't the best runner, though, so his carries will be limited.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Schmitt might get a few more receptions, but not enough to make him worth putting on your roster.

Oakland Raiders FB Owen Schmitt has a chance to make the final roster even though FB Marcel Reece is on the roster. Schmitt could be used in short-yardage situations and has a history with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

Oakland Raiders FB Owen Schmitt worked with the first-team offense quite a bit during minicamp and appears to be making a hard push for the starting job. Head coach Dennis Allen said Schmitt is one of the candidates for the short-yardage role filled by former RB Michael Bush in recent years.

Eric Williams, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks FB Owen Schmitt has been fined two game checks for violating the league's substance abuse policy but will not be suspended, according to a league spokesperson. Schmitt was charged with driving under the influence during the offseason and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving.

Danny O'Neil, of The Seattle Times, reports Seattle Seahawks FB Owen Schmitt pleaded guilty to reckless driving Wednesday, July 22, according to his attorney. Schmitt was originally charged with driving under the influence but plead guilty to the lesser charge. Schmitt was sentenced to 365 days in jail, but 364 days of that sentence were suspended. The suspended portion of the sentence will not be served so long as he obeys the conditions of conduct from the court. The final day in jail was converted into 24 hours of community service. He must pay $2,130 in fines and other costs. He also will serve two years of probation.
Fantasy Impact: He could get a NFL suspension from this. Stay tuned.
