The Detroit Lions had just four runs of 20-plus yards this season, tied for fewest in the NFL. RB Jahvid Best (concussion) would have helped in that area, but he could not get activated due to a concussion. As a result, general manager Martin Mayhew said the team will look for a running back with speed and big-play ability. 'We need that shifty back that can come in and be a change-of-pace guy and catch passes out of the backfield,' Mayhew said. 'A guy that can run routes and get one-on-one and beat a linebacker. That's what Jahvid gave us, a guy with some juice and some elusiveness.'

Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) won't play this season after the team opted to keep him on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. 'There has been subsequent evaluation and consultation regarding Jahvid since our last update (October 15),' general manager Martin Mayhew said. 'As has been the case throughout, we have deferred to the medical experts and support their current recommendation that Jahvid not return to the field this season.' Mayhew did not address Best's long-term future, but the team has clearly missed his speed and versatility in the backfield. The Lions may have to make a decision on his future with them before the NFL Draft or free-agent period after this season.
