Williams had 20 receptions in 13 games last season. He got a lot more work after catching just a pass his rookie season. Williams might have a harder time finding the field this season, though, with some new additions at receiver for the 49ers. He is fourth or fifth on the depth chart right now in San Francisco. And the chances of him moving up don't seem great. Williams has good speed and size, giving him the ability to stretch the field. He still needs a lot of work with his route running, which hasn't helped his progression He is a playmaker, though, which is why he is sticking around and getting some playing time.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Williams might see his stats dip some as the 49ers go with different options at receiver. He could get a little work on occasion but his playing time will really be hit or miss. There are better options out there for fantasy teams.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was not happy when a reporter asked about WR Kyle Williams being used as a punt returner in Week 1 in place of WR Ted Ginn Jr. (ankle). Williams struggled in that role during the NFC Championship Game last season. 'We don't, we don't ... why'd you bring that up?' Harbaugh asked. 'Why would we be taking about that? When is enough enough?' The reporter followed up by asking Harbaugh if he felt compelled to give Williams encouragement heading into Week 1, to which Harbaugh replied, 'I should ask you, why did you bring that up?. Why do you continue to ask that question? What is the reasoning?'

San Francisco 49ers WR Kyle Williams is expected to be the backup return man for the team behind WR Ted Ginn Jr. (knee). However, rookie RB LaMichael James is also expected to see some time on punts and kickoffs during training camp, and CB Perrish Cox saw time on kickoff returns during offseason workouts. RB Kendall Hunter and CB Chris Culliver also might get a look on kickoff returns.
