Allen was inactive most games his rookie season, getting just three carries in five games. The Ravens will give him a chance to compete for the top backup job this season, though. Allen is a big back that does well between the tackles. He could be a solid short-yardage specialist. He still needs plenty of work at receiver, though, which could prevent him from winning the top backup spot this season.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Allen might be worth a late-round flyer in deeper leagues. He is someone to monitor during camp and preseason action. If he wins that backup job, he'll be worth a roster spot in all formats as at least a handcuff for Ray Rice owners.

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is likely to open training camp July 26 as the primary backup to starting RB Ray Rice. Allen will be trying to hold off RBs Damien Berry, Bernard Pierce and Bobby Rainey.
Fantasy Impact: Allen is the handcuff for Rice right now but that could change as his job isn't set by any means.

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen has been working with the first-string offense during the team's OTAs and most recent three-day minicamp. After spending time buried on the depth chart in the past, Allen is finding the extra work valuable. Allen said he has found it beneficial working with the first-string because the speed is much faster than working with the backups. He appears more tone than he did previously, and at 6-0 and 230 pounds, he may have the size to be the power back for the Baltimore offense. Allen feels he needs to round out his game somewhat, as he will need to do a little bit of everything in the Ravens' system.

Baltimore Ravens RB Anthony Allen is in the mix to compete for the primary backup job behind RB Ray Rice following the retirement of RB Ricky Williams. Allen is confident he knows the system, protections, lines and passes, even though he barely played last season. '(Anthony) goes from third (running back to) potentially No. 1 if something happens,' head coach John Harbaugh said. 'Every backup player is an injury away, a play away from being the guy. We think a lot of him, we think a lot of (RB Damien Berry). We think they're going to have very good seasons, but we've got to look at some insurance, too. We've got to have more than two running backs on our roster, so we'll add some guys.'

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that he was surprised by retired RB Ricky Williams' original decision to consider retirement. And then he was surprised again that Williams didn't rethink the decision. However, he said he's confident the team can go into next season with RBs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry serving as backups.
