Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he wants to play 15 or 16 seasons. The 33-year-old and 13-year veteran wants to emulate former Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Ronde Barber, who just retired. 'Physically, I feel great right now,' Smith said. He battled knee injuries for much of last year but reportedly has looked limber and has his motor back.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera plans to give WR Steve Smith more rest during the regular season in order to keep him healthy. 'I think we have to be smart with Steve, make sure we put him in position to take advantage of his abilities and maximize his time and not waste his time or reps. So he's getting quality reps and quality plays,' Rivera said.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he is happy that the team named Mike Shula the new offensive coordinator because it will allow the offense to continue to move forward. 'You always want to hire a guy that doesn't set you back or changes up. And how a guy sets you back is all of a sudden you have to change up everything,' Smith said. 'I think that is a vital role. That's important to keep in perspective, and I think that's what we did.'
