Team Grade:
Carolina Panthers
Quarterbacks: Running Backs:
Wide Receivers: Tight Ends:
Defense: Kickers:

The Panthers had just a so-so season last year and didn't do a whole lot this offseason to get much better. This remains about a .500 team. The defense still has some holes and while the offense is getting better, it still isn't in that elite category. The Panthers lack some consistency. Cam Newton is capable of carrying a team but he needs a little more help around him to produce on a consistent basis. Carolina might be a playoff team in another season or two.

Ted Ginn, WR. Ginn has never lived up to expectations since entering the league but gets a new chance with the Panthers, a team looking for playmakers at receiver. Cam Newton likes to push the ball downfield, so Ginn could get some chances to stretch the field. Plus, Brandon LaFell hasn't exactly been great as the starter, so Ginn could overtake him if he plays well. We might take a late-round chance on Ginn. He doesn't have a whole lot to compete with to start getting consistent playing time.

Steve Smith, WR. Smith just keeps chugging along but at age 34, you have to think he'll start slowing down sooner than later. He has a history of getting nicked and missing a game or two, which is something to keep in mind as well. Smith had a 1,000-yard season last year but scored just four touchdowns, which is another concern. He can still produce some at this stage of the game but don't expect him to be a top fantasy receiver, which is likely how you are going to have to draft him. He is more of a No. 3 for fantasy teams.

Team Notes

Apr 12, 11:32 PM The Carolina Panthers want to see how FS Charles Godfrey (Achilles') does in his recovery from an Achilles' tendon injury before deciding on his future with the team. Godfrey could remain with the team but likely will not return with his $7.1 million salary cap figure for the 2014 season.
Apr 11, 04:02 PM The Carolina Panthers signed DE Alex Hall (Giants) Friday, April 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Apr 11, 10:54 AM Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson will make the veteran minimum of $730,000 as part of his one-year deal with the team. He'll receive a signing bonus of $65,000. Dickson will likely be the No. 2 tight end behind TE Greg Olsen this year. Dickson had only 25 catches for 273 yards last year with the Baltimore Ravens.
Apr 10, 09:22 PM The Tennessee Titans met with free-agent DE Ron Talley (Cardinals), DE Alex Hall (Giants) and DE Dequin Evans (Bengals) Wednesday, April 9.
Apr 10, 09:22 PM Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers signed FS Thomas DeCoud to a two-year deal worth as much as $3.75 million. The contract includes a $500,000 signing bonus.
Apr 10, 09:12 PM The Carolina Panthers have signed free-agent FS Thomas DeCoud (Panthers) to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Apr 10, 02:52 PM The Carolina Panthers have signed TE Ed Dickson (Ravens) Thursday, April 10.

Fantasy Impact: He'll serve a reserve role with the team. We wouldn't expect big production with his new team.
Apr 09, 02:33 PM Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers are expected to sign free-agent TE Ed Dickson (Ravens) during his visit Wednesday, April 9.

Apr 07, 11:53 PM The Carolina Panthers are still talking with free-agent FS Thomas DeCoud (Falcons), according to a source, but there is no agreement at this point.
Apr 07, 06:42 PM The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Jason Avant (Eagles) to an undisclosed one-year deal Monday, April 7.

Fantasy Impact: Avant is likely going to serve as the No. 4 or 5 receiver for the Panthers. Don't expect much with this move.
Apr 06, 09:32 PM The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to meet with free-agent WR Jason Avant (Eagles) Monday, April 7.
Apr 05, 11:42 PM Carolina Panthers CB Antoine Cason said Saturday, April 5, that he feels reports of his diminished speed have been greatly exaggerated, and he can be a valuable contributor. 'I'm not done. I'm still a starter and I can show that,' Cason said. 'That was one of the things I continued to tell myself all year. Whenever I get my chance, I'm going to make the most of it.'
Apr 05, 11:42 PM The Carolina Panthers are in contract talks to bring back free-agent DT Colin Cole (Panthers).
Apr 05, 11:42 PM Free-agent WR Jason Avant (Eagles) might still be in the plans for the Kansas City Chiefs, but it is likely they will not re-visit bringing him in until after the NFL Draft.
