OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Bears made quite the splash this offseason, trading for disgruntled quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler gives the Bears a legit All Pro quarterback, something they have lacked for a long, long time. Cutler's big arm gives the offense a new dimension. He replaces Kyle Orton, who was part of the Cutler deal. Chicago also picked up tackles Orlando Pace and Kevin Shaffer, giving them some more experience along the offensive line. Pace is getting older, but remains an above-average tackle as long as he can stay healthy. The Bears lost some players, but the most notable loss was safety Mike Brown, who has been a top performer in the Bears secondary the last several years. STRENGTHS The Bears had one of the better rush attacks in the game last season. Matt Forte had a monster rookie season, getting about all the work at running back. But he produced big-time numbers, getting 60-plus receptions while rushing for over 1,200 yards. The Bears should once again be a run-first team with Forte as the centerpiece. Kevin Jones also is a competent backup. He has starting experience and some big-play ability. Special teams remain a huge strength for the Bears. Devin Hester is a difference maker and game changer in the return game. He has the capability to score every time he touches the ball as a return man. And Robbie Gould remains a top kicker. He has a strong leg and is very accurate. The Bears usually have an edge most weeks in the special teams category. WEAKNESSES The Bears got a new quarterback with big-time ability, but they still lack playmakers at receiver, which is a concern for Cutler and the passing game. Devin Hester will be the No. 1 receiver this season, but he is still learning the position. After Hester, the Bears have a host of players fighting for playing time. Second-year player Earl Bennett hopes to make an impact this season, but is no sure thing. Rashied Davis has done OK in spot duty. And rookie Juaquin Iglesias has some ability, but is a rookie and might take some time getting used to the pro game. So as you can see, the Bears have a lot of questions at receiver. OUTLOOK Cutler gives the Bears a good shot at returning to the playoffs. Their defense will need to play much better if this team hopes to take a step forward, though. The Bears have the talent to make a playoff run. TEAM NOTES
