OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Bengals big news this offseason came at the receiver spot. Gone is long-time top performer T.J. Houshmandzadeh. He'll be replaced by veteran Laveranues Coles, who is probably a bit of a dropoff from Houshmandzadeh at this stage of his career. Cincinnati also lost offensive tackles Levi Jones and Stacy Andrews, leaving the team a little thin along the offensive line. The Bengals did use their sixth pick in the draft on tackle Andre Smith, though, trying to fill one of those tackle holes. Smith has a lot of upside and could be a mainstay at the left tackle spot the next several seasons. The Bengals also to a chance on defensive tackle Tank Johnson. He had off the field issues the last few seasons, but can be a top performer along the line when he is on his game. STRENGTHS The Bengals passing attack has potential. As long as Carson Palmer is healthy, this unit is capable of big things. Palmer is a big-time talent with some solid players to work with at receiver. Chad Johnson is looking to rebound after a disastrous '08 season. But Johnson has a track record of success, so the return of Palmer should help him rebound. And Coles is a more than capable No. 2 receiver. He should be able to do a pretty good job of taking Houshmandzadeh's spot in the starting lineup. Chris Henry should be the No. 3 and has done well in this role past seasons. He has big-play ability and is a top red-zone target. WEAKNESSES The Bengals have some concerns at running back. Cedric Benson is the starter. He performed well near the end of last season, but hasn't been great in a starting role throughout his career. Plus, he has some off the field concerns. After Benson, the Bengals have Brian Leonard and Kenny Watson. Needless to say, the Bengals would be in trouble if Benson were to get hurt. The running game could be a big weakness for the Bengals this season. Cincinnati's pass defense improved a lot last season to become a strength, but the rush defense remains a concern. Johnson will help the defensive line, but he is far from a sure thing after doing little the last few seasons. The Bengals were 21st against the rush last season, allowing 120.1 yards per game. Cincy hopes second-round pick Rey Maualuga provides the team a run-stuffing presence at middle linebacker. OUTLOOK The defense played much better last season, but the offense was horrible. If Palmer can rebound and the running game does something, the Bengals could surprise and challenge for a playoff spot. They have an easy schedule, which bodes well for a turnaround. TEAM NOTES
