OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Browns had a ton of turnover this season, including a new coach, Eric Mangini. With the coaching change, Mangini brought in many players he coached in New York, including linebackers Eric Barton and David Bowens, safety Abram Elam and defensive tackle C.J. Mosley. These guys know the Jets new defense, which should help make for a smooth transition. Cleveland also traded a key part of their offense, though, getting rid of tight end Kellen Winslow. They were already hurting for options in the passing game, so the loss of Winslow is fairly significant. But the Browns used two second round picks on receivers, hoping to fill the void left by Winslow. STRENGTHS The Browns have an emerging secondary. They were 14th against the pass last season and could improve on that as their fairly young secondary gets more seasoning. The Browns had 23 interceptions last season. Eric Wright is turning into a shutdown corner and Brandon McDonald is a playmaker, grabbing five interceptions last season. Abram Elam and Brodney Pool are solid safeties, doing a good job in coverage. The Browns could be tough to throw against this season. WEAKNESSES While the secondary could be very good, the Browns rush defense is a concern. They were 28th against the run last season, allowing over 150 yards per game. A healthy defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is key for the Browns if they hope to turn this thing around. But Rogers needs some help if the Browns really hope to improve against the run. Linebackers Kamerion Wimbley and D\'Qwell Jackson need to make more plays. The Browns have a quarterback competition, which isn't a bad thing, but neither has shown much of late, which is a concern. Brady Quinn seems the favorite, but Derek Anderson played at an All Pro level a couple seasons back. Either way, this position is a concern because of the uncertainty and the fact neither player stepped it up last season. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the quarterback position a revolving door this season in Cleveland. OUTLOOK The Browns seem to be in a rebuilding mode. Their season could depend on the quarterback play. If one of these guys plays at a high level, the Browns could surprise. But we wouldn't count on that happening. They are probably are year or two away from making the playoffs, again. TEAM NOTES
