OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Packers made most of their offseason noise in the draft, making several picks to bolster their defense. Green Bay used their first two picks on possible impact player. Defensive tackle B.J. Raji should give the Packers rush defense a boost. And linebacker Clay Matthews is a playmaker. He can get after the quarterback or drop back in coverage and make plays. These two players should have an immediate impact on the Packers defense. Defensive tackle Colin Cole was probably the biggest loss this offseason, but Cole wasn't anything special. Raji should be an improvement over Cole at tackle. STRENGTHS Green Bay is very deep at receiver. Greg Jennings is a legit No. 1 receiver, posting big numbers his last two seasons. Donald Driver is getting older, but remains a productive starter. Jordy Nelson did some good things his rookie season and could play a bigger role this season with a year under his belt. And James Jones is another big-play threat in the passing game. The Packers have four capable starters at receiver, giving Aaron Rodgers the ability to make a ton of plays in the passing game. The strength of the Packers defense is the pass defense. They ranked 12th against the pass last season, allowing just 202.8 yards per game. The Packers have two top corners in Al Harris and Charles Woodson. These guys are shutdown corners capable of making big plays. And Atari Bigby and Nick Collins do a great job at safety, making plays and disrupting the run. WEAKNESSES The Packers struggled to run the ball at times last season. Ryan Grant finished pretty well, but got off to a slow start and was a nonfactor many weeks. He needs to be much more consistent. Brandon Jackson is an adequate backup and big-play threat, but probably isn't starter material. The Packers need Grant to return to his '07 form, running over tacklers and making big plays downfield. OUTLOOK The Packers are a legit playoff team, especially with the additions on defense. If the running game can find some consistency, this team will score a ton of points. Green Bay probably is a few players from a Super Bowl run, but getting closer. TEAM NOTES
