The Jaguars made some nice moves this offseason and seem to be headed in the right direction. But they are a young team and still are missing some pieces on both sides of the ball. This team should struggle once again, especially the offense. The Jaguars need Blake Bortles to emerge as that franchise quarterback to give the offense an identity. Until that happens, expect plenty of struggles from the Jaguars. Jacksonville should be a few games better than last season, though. Things are getting better for this team.
Receiver Cecil Shorts was on his way to a 1,000-yard season last year before missing the last three games of the season because of injury. We think he can take that next step this season. He is the No. 1 receiver in this offense, an offense that should be a little more consistent this season. Shorts continues to improve every season and should make another jump this season. He is likely to get the most targets on the team.
Quarterback Chad Henne is expected to open the season as the starter but he is just keeping the seat warm for Blake Bortles. Henne might start much of the year but Bortles will get a shot at some point, especially if the Jaguars struggle, which is likely. Henne is always capable of the big game but he'll be inconsistent in a starting role. He always has played that way, so don't expect a change this season. Bortles is the future at the position for the Jaguars.

Team Notes

Jul 21, 11:03 PM Jacksonville Jaguars OG Jacques McClendon is the frontrunner to start at right guard heading into training camp, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. OG Brandon Linder is the other candidate for the starting job.
Jul 21, 10:53 PM Jacksonville Jaguars CB Aaron Colvin (knee) will begin training camp and the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, the team believes he could return to play in the second half of the season.
Jul 21, 03:12 AM Although the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff is still high on QB Chad Henne, coach Gus Bradley said QB Blake Bortles could start a preseason game. It would be late in the preseason if he did, and we'll see how things go, said Bradley. We're really excited about Chad and what he's going to do so we'll see how it goes with him until that fourth preseason game.
Jul 20, 05:42 PM Jacksonville Jaguars FB Bradie Ewing will battle FB Will Ta'ufo'ou for the starting fullback spot in camp.
Jul 20, 05:42 PM Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart will be the team's workhorse, according to offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch.
Jul 20, 05:32 PM Jacksonville Jaguars RB Storm Johnson will enter camp as the fourth running back, but the team is excited about his potential. 'Storm is going to run at the same speed as (Toby Gerhart) and maybe a hair faster, but he's strong and really compact,' offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said. 'He has incredible vision and lower body strength.'
Jul 20, 05:32 PM Jacksonville Jaguars RB Jordan Todman is viewed as a change-of-pace back, along with RB Denard Robinson, according to offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. 'Those two guys are truly change-of-pace backs,' Fisch said. 'Jordan really intrigues us with his burst, speed and acceleration? I'm excited about Denard.' Todman has value as a RB4 or a handcuff to Toby Gerhart.
Jul 19, 10:22 PM Jacksonville Jaguars SS Winston Guy is considered the leading candidate for the starting free safety job but will have to compete with FS Josh Evans (foot) for the job during training camp.
Jul 19, 09:22 AM Jacksonville Jaguars OT Luke Joeckel looks more athletic and faster, according to offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. He looked more athletic than I remember him, Fisch said. When he was doing his rehab, he spent so much time on his lower body, he came back looking faster.
Jul 19, 09:22 AM Jacksonville Jaguars OT Zane Beadles received praise from offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. He's certainly as advertised and then some, Fisch said. By having such a young line, he knew he had to step up his leadership.
Jul 18, 10:42 PM Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars LB Dekoda Watson (hernia) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season even though he is recovering from hernia surgery he had in June, according to a source.
Jul 17, 07:42 PM Jacksonville Jaguars LB Dekoda Watson (groin) could start training camp on the physically unable to perform list due to sports hernia surgery.
Jul 16, 04:43 PM Jacksonville Jaguars LBs J.T. Thomas, John Lotulelei, Nathan Stupar, Allen Bradford and Marcus Whitfield could compete for one roster spot during training camp.
Jul 16, 04:33 PM The Jacksonville Jaguars could limit LB Geno Hayes' (knee) practice time during training camp, because he is coming back from offseason knee surgery.
Jul 16, 04:23 PM Jacksonville Jaguars tight ends coach Ron Middleton said he hopes TE Marcedes Lewis will get more opportunities to catch passes in the middle of the field because of the additions of WRs Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson. 'That's going to be huge for Marcedes,' Middleton said. 'It will give him a chance to do what he does best - run right by safeties down the seam and have [QB Chad Henne] throw it up high to him.'
Jul 16, 04:13 PM The Jacksonville Jaguars hope OG Brandon Linder will be able to win the starting right guard job during training camp.
