OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES Once again, the Jags made receiver a priority this offseason, hoping to find some more talent to help David Garrard. Gone are receivers Matt Jones and Jerry Porter. Jones led the Jags in receiving last season, but got in trouble once again during the offseason and was let go. The Jags added Torry Holt through free agency, hoping to finally find a dependable No. 1 receiver. Jacksonville also added three receivers in the draft - Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard and Tiquan Underwood. The other big change for the Jags comes at running back. Long-time standout Fred Taylor wasn't re-signed, leaving the starting running back duties to Maurice Jones-Drew. The running game should get a boost with the addition of rookie tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. Both could be the tackles and anchor the offensive line for years to come. STRENGTHS Once again, the Jags will have one of the best rushing games in the league. Gone is Fred Taylor, but Maurice Jones-Drew remains and should do just fine in a starting role. He has been a top producer even with Taylor around. Jones-Drew is the complete package, doing a great job running the ball and in the passing game. Greg Jones and Chauncey Washington will battle for the No. 2 job, but Jones has some potential, doing well in spot duty past seasons. The running game will be a big-time strength for the Jags. WEAKNESSES Even with some changes at receiver, we still aren't sold on the Jags receiver. They have a bunch of options that are about the same. There isn't a player that stands out in that group. Holt isn't the same player he used to be, so they shouldn't be counting on him to be their No. 1. The Jags need that marquee receiver if they hope their passing attack reaches the next level. Maybe one of their three draft picks will become that, but nothing is certain right now. The Jags suffered stopping the pass last season (24th overall) and didn't do much to remedy that problem. Rashean Mathis and Brian Williams are solid corners, but nothing spectacular. And the safety spot is a concern with Sean Considine and Reggie Nelson manning those spots. The Jags will be susceptible to the big passing play in a pass-happy conference - not a good combo. OUTLOOK This Jags were a disappointment last season, but we think they can turn it around and challenge for a playoff spot. The defense suffered a lot because of injury. The Jags should be able to run the ball and play above-average defense, which usually translates to good things. Expect them to rebound and play much better football this season. TEAM NOTES
