OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The big change for the Vikings comes at quarterback. The Vikings acquired Sage Rosenfels to compete with Tarvaris Jackson for the starting duties. Rosenfels has the leg up to start and instantly upgrades the Vikings quarterback depth. He'll get some help with the addition of receiver Percy Harvin in the draft. Harvin gives the Vikings three top receivers on the offensive side of the ball. Harvin is a playmaker. The Vikings do have some holes to fill, though. Two mainstays on the offensive and defensive side of the ball are gone. Center Matt Birk was released, living a big void along the offensive line. And safety Darren Sharper also is gone. Sharper was a top playmaker in the secondary for the Vikings. STRENGTHS The Vikings have maybe the best rushing game in the league. Teams knew they were going to run last two seasons and still couldn't stop them. Adrian Peterson might be the most exciting player in the game. And his backup, Chester Taylor, could be starting on several NFL teams. The Vikings will rely on the run to carry the offense once again, and Peterson and Taylor should be up to the challenge. Minnesota can run on teams and their rush defense stops teams. Their rush defense was tops in the league for the second straight season, giving up just 77 yards per game. Pat and Kevin Williams are two of the best run stuffing tackles in the game. They'll be tough to run on once again this season. WEAKNESSES The Vikings pass defense made strides last season, but still remain a weakness on the defensive side of the ball. And the loss of Sharper in the secondary doesn't help matters. Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin are the starting corners and do a solid job, but are nothing special and susceptible to the big play. OUTLOOK The Vikings seem setup for a trip to the playoffs. They have a top rushing attack and shutdown the run, which is a great combination. Plus, the passing game should be improved with Rosenfels and Harvin added to the mix. This team is capable of representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. TEAM NOTES
