OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Jets made a couple big additions to their defense during the offseason. They did lose linebackers Eric Barton and David Bowens, end Eric Hicks and tackle C.J. Mosley, but added two top playmakers in linebacker Bart Scott and cornerback Lito Sheppard. Scott is a franchise player that should lead the Jets defense for years to come. And Sheppard can be a shutdown corner, giving the Jets a lift in the secondary. New York also will have a new starting quarterback this season. Brett Favre is gone after just one season. The Jets traded up in the draft to nab Mark Sanchez. He is their future at the position, likely starting this season. The Jets also used the draft to maybe find their future starting running back, Shonn Greene. STRENGTHS The Jets are very deep at running back. Thomas Jones is the starter and is coming off a career season. Greene was added for the future, but should see carries as soon as this season backing up Jones. And we can't forget Leon Washington, a top playmaker that gets a ton of receptions as a change of pace back. Washington also is a top return man. The Jets have three backs capable of starting and producing big numbers. The linebacker position is a real strength for the Jets. The position was strong last season and got even better with the addition of Scott. He is joined by David Harris, Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas. These guys are playmakers. Thomas is a great rusher off the edge. Harris is a good run stopper and does well in college. And Pace does a great job on the other side of Thomas, getting after the quarterback and making plays. The Jets have four top linebackers, which should make new head coach, who is defensive minded, Rex Ryan very happy. WEAKNESSES The Jets are thin at receiver. Jerricho Cotchery is a solid starter, but not an elite receiver. He is a good possession guy that moves the chains. But after him, the Jets have a lot of question marks. David Clowney, Chansi Stuckey and Brad Smith round out the depth chart. None of those guys are very exciting as starters. The Jets could really struggle to throw the ball if Cotchery and tight end Dustin Keller are covered. OUTLOOK The Jets continue to make upgrades. Their defense could be really good. But the quarterback position is a bit of a concern, which could hold them back this season. The Jets have a strong running game, though, and possibly a shutdown defense, which could make up for shaky quarterback play. They could be a playoff team this season. TEAM NOTES
