OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES

The Raiders made some upgrades offensively. They used their first pick in the draft on speedy wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, giving them a big-play option in the passing game. And Oakland also improved at quarterback, added Jeff Garcia to the mix. He'll backup of JaMarcus Russell, but provides good insurance for Russell if he falters or gets hurt.

The biggest loss for the Raiders came on defense. Safety Gibril Wilson is gone. Wilson was second on the team in tackles last season, so his void will be tough to fill. Center Jake Grove and tackle Kwame Harris also left the team, leaving some voids along the offensive line.

STRENGTHS

The Raiders will have a top rushing attack this season. They have three capable backs. Darren McFadden is the big-play threat in the group and could have a breakout season his second in the league. Justin Fargas has been a solid starter and producer, and should get plenty of chances this season. Fargas has plus speed and moves in the open field. Michael Bush is the bruiser of the group. He is a big back, but also has pretty good speed and surprising moves. The Raiders should be a run-first offense with this group of talented backs at their disposal.

Oakland also has a top pass defense. They finished 10th in the league in pass defense last season. And the Raiders probably have the best cornerback in the game right now, Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha is a shutdown corner that is rarely thrown against. Chris Johnson is the other starter and does a pretty good job, grabbing three interceptions last season. The Raiders also improved at safety by grabbing Michael Mitchell in the second round of the draft. Mitchell is a top athlete with great playmaking ability. The Raiders will be a tough team to throw on this season.

WEAKNESSES

The Raiders did make some improvements at receiver, but still lack that No. 1 guy. Heyward-Bey helps, but he isn't a polished product and could struggle some early in his career. After him, the Raiders have a lot of guys fighting for playing time. Chaz Schilens is the other likely starter, but Schilens is no sure thing with little experience. Javon Walker is the most experienced of the group, but can't stay healthy. Johnnie Lee Higgins is another top deep threat, but needs to improve his route running and consistency. The Raiders have a lot of question marks at receiver, meaning their passing game could struggle this season.

OUTLOOK

The Raiders rushing attack could keep them in some games, but they don't have much of a rush defense and their passing game should struggle. They could one a game or two more than last season, but don't expect a sudden jump to the playoffs.

TEAM NOTES
Nov 19, 09:23 PM Oakland Raiders FS Hiram Eugene (shoulder) practiced in full Thursday, Nov. 19, and he should play Week 11.
Nov 19, 09:23 PM Oakland Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski (hamstring) practiced in full Thursday, Nov. 19, and he will start Week 11. Head coach Tom Cable said the move is for the remainder of the season.
Nov 18, 11:03 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders FS Michael Huff (ankle) practiced in full Wednesday, Nov. 18. Huff's ankle was bad enough that he needed an MRI exam.
Nov 18, 10:53 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders WR Chaz Schilens will start in place of WR Louis Murphy Week 11.

Fantasy Impact: He still has little fantasy value.
Nov 18, 06:03 PM David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the Oakland Raiders have named QB Bruce Gradkowski the starter heading into Week 11.

Fantasy Impact: Not a surprise, but he still isn't worth using on fantasy teams.
Nov 18, 10:53 AM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden will not be used as a kick returner, according to head coach Tom Cable, despite having success in that role in college.
Nov 18, 10:53 AM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders FS Hiram Eugene could start at free safety in Week 11 if FS Michael Huff (ankle) is unable to play.
Nov 17, 12:03 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders FS Michael Huff (ankle) is questionable for Week 11 with an ankle sprain, according to head coach Tom Cable.
Nov 17, 12:03 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski (hamstring) is questionable for Week 11 with a hamstring strain, according to head coach Tom Cable.

Fantasy Impact: This doesn't help his case to start this week.
Nov 17, 11:23 AM Paul Gutierrez, of the Sacramento Bee, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable has promised a decision would be announced by Wednesday, Nov. 18, on the team's starting quarterback for Week 11.
Nov 16, 06:43 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said QB Charlie Frye will be considered when the team decides which quarterback will start in Week 11.
Nov 16, 05:13 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said QB JaMarcus Russell misread consecutive plays when receivers were open, which lead Cable to bench Russell.
Nov 16, 05:03 PM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Kansas City Chiefs SS Mike Brown said Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell usually only reads one side of the field, which makes it easier for a defense. 'Obviously, he's been struggling a little bit. He's turned the ball over more than any quarterback in the league. That's something that we talked about. And usually he only looks at one side of the field. He doesn't read the whole field,' Brown said.
Nov 16, 04:53 PM Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell said he is not sure why he was benched in Week 10. 'I really can't explain it. I really don't know what to say about it, but that was his decision, and just move on from it,' Russell said. Russell has completed only 47.1 percent of his passes this season and has thrown two touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Fantasy Impact: Russell just doesn't seem to get it. He rarely takes the blame for his play even though he has been awful this season.
Nov 16, 10:53 AM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders RB Michael Bush rushed for 119 yards on 14 carries in Week 10.

Fantasy Impact: Bush probably earned some more carries with his huge game.
Nov 16, 10:53 AM Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden (knee) had 11 yards rushing on four carries in his return to action in Week 10.

Fantasy Impact: McFadden didn't get much work in his first game back. We wouldn't expect a huge turnaround any time soon.
