OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES

The Steelers didn't really add anything except through the draft. Pittsburgh took a defensive tackle, Ziggy Hood, in hopes of bolstering their defensive line for the future. Receiver Mike Wallace gives the team a speedy, deep threat at receiver, but could take a year or two to blossom in the offense. The Steelers also added running back Frank Summers, who could become the top short-yardage option for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh did lose a few key pieces to their team, though. Former starting cornerback Bryant McFadden left, leaving a whole in the secondary. No. 3 receiver Nate Washington became a top option in the passing game, but left for a chance to start. Lastly, the Steelers let go linebacker Larry Foote, who has been a solid contributor on the defensive side of the ball the last several seasons.

STRENGTHS

Pittsburgh has a potent rushing game with Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall serving as the one-two punch. Parker has been a little injury prone the last couple seasons, but produces big numbers when playing. Mendenhall had his rookie season shortened because of injury, but still has a lot of upside and promise. He has top speed and good moves, but also possesses pretty good size. And we can't forge Mewelde Moore, who did a more than admirable job in a starting role last season for the Steelers. He proved to be more than a change of pace back.

The Steelers are stacked at linebacker. LaMarr Woodley, James Farrior, James Harrison and Lawrence Timmons give the Steelers four very good linebackers in their 3-4 scheme. All four are good athletes with speed, capable of rushing the passer or helping in coverage. These guys fly all over the field and make plays.

WEAKNESSES

The Steelers passing game can be up and down. Their receivers need to play more consistent. Santonio Holmes was the MVP of the Super Bowl, but needs to sustain that play over the course of a full season. He'll have some lapses, which hurts the Steelers. Hines Ward remains productive, but is getting older and probably has lost a little. Limas Sweed will be counted on to be the No. 3, but barely saw the field his rookie season. Sweed could have some struggles early. Wallace has a chance to earn some playing time, but he'll be a rookie and could take some time to adjust. The Steelers have some options in the passing game, but could struggle some weeks if these guys don't make some strides this season.

OUTLOOK

Pittsburgh has a Super Bowl caliber team. They have an unbelievable defense and solid running game, a good combo. If the passing game can be a little more consistent, the Steelers are likely the team to beat in the AFC.

Nov 18, 10:23 AM Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have forced eight turnovers in the three full games SS Troy Polamalu (knee) has played this season. In the six games Polamalu has either missed or playing sparingly, the Steelers have just four takeaways.

Fantasy Impact: Not a surprise. Polamalu is a differnce maker in the secondary.
Nov 17, 01:23 PM Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (knee) is questionable at best to play in Week 11. However, head coach Mike Tomlin has not yet ruled Polamalu out for the game. Polamalu strained the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Week 10, the same knee in which he injured the medial collateral ligament in Week 1 and ended up missing four games and parts of two others. Tomlin said the current injury is not as significant as the MCL. 'There was no setback to the MCL injury,' said Tomln, who emphasized that they are two separate injuries.
Nov 16, 06:43 PM The Associated Press reports the knee injury Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (knee) suffered in Week 10 is not believed to be as serious as the one he suffered in Week 1. His status for Week 11 is uncertain.
Nov 16, 12:43 PM CBSSports.com reports Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (knee) sprained his left knee in Week 10, the same knee he had the MCL sprain that caused him to miss four weeks earlier this season.
Nov 16, 12:13 PM Ron Cook, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said following Week 10 that SS Troy Polamalu (knee) went to the hospital for an MRI after injuring his left knee during the game. Polamalu will likely miss some action.

Fantasy Impact: Not good. The Steelers have a different defense when Polamalu isn't in the lineup.
Nov 15, 05:53 PM The Associated Press reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was 20-for-40 for 174 yards with an interception Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Impact: This was a disappointing showing for Big Ben, who had thrown for a lot of yards in recent weeks.
Nov 13, 03:13 PM Pittsburgh Steelers DE Travis Kirschke (calf) and FB Carey Davis (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 13. They have been ruled out for the team's Week 10 game.
Nov 13, 03:13 PM Pittsburgh Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 13. He is listed as probable for Week 10 and is expected to play.
Nov 12, 04:33 PM Pittsburgh Steelers FB Carey Davis (hamstring) will not play in Week 10. WR Mike Wallace or TE Matt Spaeth could serve as the team's No. 3 fullback with Davis out.
