OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES

The Seahawks had a lot of changes this offseason. Coach Mike Holmgren left the team, leaving Jim Mora Jr. as head coach. Mora will bring a different style of play to Seattle, using more of run-first, defensive approach to the Seahawks. The Seahawks also brought in receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, giving them a top option in the passing game. The other big signing was Ken Lucas, who takes over a starting cornerback job for the Seahawks.

Seattle also has some holes to fill besides the loss of Holmgren. Standout linebacker Julian Peterson is gone. Peterson was the top pass rusher and a great playmaker at linebacker. Running back Maurice Morris has been a steady contributor on offense for the Seahawks. He is a top change of pace back and will be missed. Lastly, steady receiver Bobby Engram changed teams. He has been a steady option in the Seahawk passing attack the last several seasons.

STRENGTHS

The Seahawks receiving corps has some talented options. Houshmandzadeh gives them a legit No. 1 receiver. Deion Branch hasn't stayed very healthy the last few seasons, but can be a top option in the passing game when he is healthy. The combo of Houshmandzadeh and Branch could be very good for the Seahawks this season. Nate Burleson also is a dependable option in the passing game for the Seahawks, giving the Seahawks three receivers capable of starting on most teams. And we can't forget Matt Hasselbeck returns at quarterback this season. He makes this whole thing work for the Seahawks, giving them what could be a top passing attack this season.

The Seahawks lost Peterson this offseason, but they still will do a good job of getting after the quarterback. Patrick Kerney is a beast at defensive end, and rookie Aaaron Curry should be a top playmaker for years to come at linebacker. And don't overlook Darryl Tapp and Brandon Mebane, who each had 5.5 sacks last season. The Seahawks will harass the quarterback on a weekly basis.

WEAKNESSES

We aren't sold on the Seahawks possible two-back approach. They'll need a back to step forward and take consistent work if they hope the offense plays as well as past seasons. Julius Jones had some moments last season, but proved he wasn't a No. 1 back, once again. Edgerrin James isn't a bad pickup, but his best days are likely behind him. And after those two marginal backs, the Seahawks are very thin. This rushing attack isn't very exciting at all.

OUTLOOK

The NFC West isn't the strongest division, so the Seahawks have a shot to win the division. But their rushing game is a big concern and their defense is just alright. We wouldn't expect them to challenge for a playoff spot outside of competing for their division title.
