Outlook

The 49ers were a disappointment last year and parted ways with coach Jim Harbaugh. The team still has a lot of talent, though, and should challenge for a playoff spot. The division is very good, which is a concern for the 49ers. San Francisco has a very good defense but the offense remains the concern. If the offense can play more consistently, most notably Kaepernick, the 49ers can return to the playoffs and challenge for the division crown. But if the offense has more issues, expect San Francisco to miss out on the playoffs.
FANTASY BREAKOUT
Frank Gore is gone, making second-year back Carlos Hyde the starter for the 49ers. He didn't get a ton of chances as a rookie but made some plays with his work. A much bigger workload should lead to good things for Hyde. He is a three-down back that will get better as he gets more touches. Hyde can be a fantasy star in this league, getting plenty of touches in an offense that should feed the running back plenty.
FANTASY DUD
You keep waiting for quarterback Colin Kaepernick to have that breakout. Well, it hasn't happened to this point, so don't expect a sudden turnaround. He'll show flashes of good things and have some big games but struggle in others. He is what he is, a fantasy backup worthy of some spot starts. Don't expect him to suddenly become a superstar and elite fantasy quarterback. He brings good things to the table but a lack of accuracy and poor decision making keep holding him back.

Team Notes

May 18, 06:33 PM San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) has been practicing without restrictions this offseason.
May 17, 08:13 PM San Francisco 49ers FB Bruce Miller has switched exclusively to tight end this offseason after running backs coach Tom Rathman informed Miller that he longer had room for another back.
May 17, 03:43 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. '[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing,' Kelly said. 'I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do.' Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

May 17, 01:03 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has made a good first impression with his work ethic to the new coaching staff, despite asking for a trade earlier in the offseason. He could wind up starting in Week 1. 'Works his butt off in rehab, great with the coaches, learning the offense quickly, I like him a lot,' one coach said.

Fantasy Impact: Don't discount Kaepernick to win the starting job just yet. He could grab that job if he keeps impressing.
May 16, 01:53 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. 'He's extremely athletic,' Kelly began. 'It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you.'
May 16, 01:43 PM San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde was praised by new head coach Chip Kelly recently. 'Carlos is a stud. He's been full-go since we started in the beginning of April,' Kelly said. 'Participated in everything. And he's as advertised. To have someone that size that is that agile, has that vision, it's really impressive to see him work every day. There have been no restrictions on him at all. He's full clear, 100 percent, and he's going. He's really good, we're really excited about him.'
May 14, 08:33 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.

May 13, 04:33 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) has not been cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts at this point but may be able to participate during the mandatory minicamp in June.
May 11, 06:03 PM San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has already made an impression on his new team following minicamp. 'It's quicker, you're up to the line of scrimmage faster,' wide receiver Torrey Smith said. 'I actually like it because I'm usually the last person to jog back to the huddle anyway. Just get lined up, you can catch your break there and you can also catch the defense off guard.' TE Garrett Celek said the simplicity of the offense enables them to play faster. The offensive players said it will take some time to adjust to the new approach, but Celek said once it clicks it will be go, go, go.

May 10, 10:43 AM San Francisco 49ers RB Jarryd Hayne is expected to produce more in his second season, according to the team. 'I think you'll see a jump from him,'' said 49ers executive Paraag Marathe, who still oversees the team's football analytics department. 'You look at elite athletes and those guys who have that willpower and desire to succeed and there's something special in them.'
May 06, 12:43 AM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is doing an 'awfully good job' with his rehab, according to general manager Trent Baalke.
