OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Bucs saw some turnover this offseason. The most notable is coach Jon Gruden was fired. He was replaced by Raheem Morris, who likely brings a more defensive approach to the Bucs. Tampa did add some talent to the offensive side of the ball, though. They traded for tight end Kellen Winslow and signing running back Derrick Ward and quarterback Byron Leftwich. Winslow gives the Bucs a legit pass-catching tight end. Ward will compete for the starting job and should get his fair share of carries even if he doesn't start. And Leftwich, like Ward, should be given a chance to start, but will have some competition. Tampa will be without some players this season that have been with the team a long time. Quarterback Jeff Garcia, cornerback Philip Buchanon, receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, linebacker Derrick Brooks and running back Warrick Dunn are all gone. Do you see a trend here? Most of the guys let go were older and on the downside of their careers, meaning the Bucs are trying to get younger. STRENGTHS Tampa really has some depth at running back. Earnest Graham has been a solid starter the last few seasons. He was hit by the injury bug last season, but proved to be a dependable starter when healthy. Newly acquired Derrick Ward ran for a 1,000 yard despite playing in a reserve role last season. Ward is a slasher with some big-play ability. Carnell Williams is coming off another knee injury, but is a former starter and top producer. So the Bucs have three solid backs on the roster, making the running game the likely strength of the offense. WEAKNESSES The Bucs receiving corps isn't too strong. Antonio Bryant emerged as a top No. 1 last season, but who knows how he'll do with Gruden gone. Bryant has a ton of talent, but hasn't played at a high level over an extended period at any point in his career. After Bryant, the Bucs have Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall and Sammie Stroughter. The Bucs receivers are a big "if" after Bryant. Clayton can be pretty good, but also has been inconsistent the last few seasons. The other two are unknowns, which is a concern. This unit is shaky to say the least. The quarterback spot is another concern. Garcia wasn't a top No. 1 last season, but still played well when healthy. He'll be missed. The Bucs have some options to choose from at quarterback, but none of these guys seem like a true No. 1 quarterback at the moment. Josh Freeman is the future, but he is a rookie and needs a lot of seasoning before being ready. That leaves Luke McCown and Leftwich to battle it out for the right to start. Leftwich has the most starting experience, but has struggled in a bit his past few seasons when given a chance to start. He has a slow delivery and lacks some accuracy. McCown has a big arm and moves around the pocket well, but lacks experience and tends to force some throws. OUTLOOK The quarterback spot will hold this team back this season. Their defense remains solid, but a lot of coaching turnover and some veterans leaving makes this season a rebuilding year for the Bucs. Tampa isn't a playoff team and could finish near the bottom of their division. TEAM NOTES
