OFFSEASON GAINS AND LOSSES The Titans have a huge hole to fill on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth signed with the Redskins during the offseason. Haynesworth was the top defensive player for the Titans and a big-time run stopper. He will be tough to replace for the Titans. Besides Haynesworth, though, the Titans didn't lose much else of significance. Tennessee did add a couple players that should make an impact. They signed receiver Nate Washington and drafted receiver Kenny Britt in the first round. This upgrades the Titans receiving corps, which was badly needed. The Titans also signed defensive tackle Jovan Haye to give the defensive line a little more depth with Haynesworth gone. STRENGTHS The Titans running game should be strong, again. Chris Johnson proved to be a big-time back last season, carrying the load much of the year for the Titans. Johnson is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. LenDale White is a good compliment for Johnson. White is a between the tackles runner and short-yardage threat. Johnson should get more carries than White, but both will get their fair share. The Titans are a run-first team with Johnson and White carrying the offense most weeks. Tennessee has a strong linebacker unit. David Thornton is a star on the outside while Keith Bulluck and Stephen Tulloch more than hold their own at the other two spots. Bulluck is good in pass coverage and also does well supporting the rush. Tulloch emerged as a top middle linebacker last season and should be a force for the next several seasons. The Titans defense will be lead by their linebackers, especially with Haynesworth now gone. WEAKNESSES We like the additions the Titans made at receiver, but the passing game still lacks top talent at receiver. Justin Gage is the top option, but he isn't a great fit for being a No. 1 receiver. He tends to drop some passes and lacks top speed. Britt has the potential to be a No. 1, but is a rookie and could take a few seasons to find his own in the NFL. Washington was a No. 3 in Pittsburgh and produced in that role, but is likely a starter for the Titans, which could make for a hard transition for him. After those three, the Titans have a lot of so-so options - Lavelle Hawkins, Paul Williams, Mark Jones. Unless Britt storms onto the scene and has a huge rookie season, expect the Titans passing game to have its struggles this season. OUTLOOK The Titans always field a quality team and this year should be no different. The loss of Haynesworth is huge, though, so a dropoff in wins from last year wouldn't be a surprise. This team remains a playoff team, but probably not a Super Bowl contender at the moment. TEAM NOTES
