SUMMARY
Running Back Rank: #37
Overall: #90

Maroney is in a make or break year with the Patriots. He landed on Injured Reserve early in the season (played in just three games) because of a shoulder injury last year. He should be fine for the coming season, but his role is yet to be determined. The Patriots went with a host of backs splitting time last season, but you would have to think if Maroney is healthy and running well, he'll get the most touches at running back. But that is a big ?if.? Maroney hasn't made it through a full season in three years and has yet to run for 1,000 yards. He has showed flashes, though, running with speed and power. He also can make plays as a receiver, catching 22 passes his rookie season. But the injury bug has derailed his progress.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Don't draft Maroney as anything more than a No. 3 back. He has some upside in a great offense, but he can't stay healthy and could split work with a few other Patriots backs. He is an iffy proposition for fantasy teams. But he has some plusses, which makes him worth grabbing in the middle rounds of your draft.

Karen Guregian, of The Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney still looks tentative at the line, but has made a positive impression with his improved skills as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

The Associated Press reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said RB Laurence Maroney has had a productive training camp and improved in the passing game. Maroney made it through training camp without suffering any injuries.
Fantasy Impact: Right now, Maroney seems No. 1 on the depth chart, but the Patriots will rotate backs regardless. Maroney still doesn't bring a lot to the table for fantasy teams.

Jeff Zillgitt, of USA Today, reports New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney wasn't upset the Patriots added RB Fred Taylor during the offseason. Instead, he has looked at it as a 'blessing.' Maroney said he has learned a lot from Taylor, who also dealt with frustrating injuries throughout his career. Taylor didn't play a full season until his fifth year in the league. RB Kevin Faulk said Maroney has spent a lot of time this offseason working hard to rehab his shoulder. 'He wants to be the first guy,' Faulk said. Maroney, who feels more comfortable in the offense now, said he feels like he is due for a healthy season and is looking to prove he can avoid injuries. 'I feel like the best I've been in a while. Everything's feeling great. Legs feel good. Shoulders feel good,' Maroney said.

Karen Guregian, of the Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney said he needs to prove that he can be a productive running back for the team this season. 'I feel like my rookie year was cool, my second year, the second half I finished strong, last year I got hurt, so I feel like all three years I was dealing with injuries. So this is the year I really have to prove to the fans, to the coaches, to the world, I can be this running back, I can be the guy for [head coach Bill Belichick] and the Patriots,' Maroney said.
Fantasy Impact: This is a make or break year for Maroney. He could be running out of time to start in the NFL.

Andy Hart, of Patriots Football Weekly, reports New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney (shoulder) did not lead the team in rushing any single game during the 2008 season. While he has shown flashes in his first three years, questions surrounding his durability and consistency are high entering a critical fourth-year with the team.
Fantasy Impact: Needless to say, this will be a make or break year for Maroney. He is running out of time to make an impact.

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots have placed RB Laurence Maroney (shoulder) on Injured Reserve, according to an NFL source.
Fantasy Impact: His shoulder could have been an issue all season, which explains his poor production. Sammy Morris is the best back to own in New England, but his work will be up and down.
