Summary

Quarterback Rank: #41
Overall: #233

His rookie season didn't go quite as expected, watching Alex Smith finally have his breakout season. He attempted just five passes all season. He will be given a shot to compete for the starter's job this season but it would seem to be Smith's to lose at this point. Unless Smith falls on his face, he should be the starter. But Smith could be on a short leash with Kaepernick waiting in the wings. He is the future at quarterback for the 49ers. Kaepernick is an athletic quarterback that gets it done as a passer and runner. He is a legit dual threat. He also has a rocket for an arm and can make all the throws necessary. He is a bit raw, though, so another season sitting behind Smith might not be the worst thing for his development.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
It wouldn't surprise to see Kaepernick get some starts at some point this season but until that happens, he isn't worth a roster spot outside of keeper leagues. You still have to like his potential and upside in a starting role because he is a dual threat. He has real fantasy potential. But for now, just keep an eye on his situation and give him some fantasy consideration if he finds the starting lineup.

Notes

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Josh X. Johnson will be competing for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp but neither will have the edge when the competition begins.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he expects to be involved in an open and fair competition for the team's starting quarterback job in 2012.
Fantasy Impact: If Alex Smith returns, he'll be the starter but on a short leash with Kaepernick around.

The San Francisco 49ers are considering giving QB Colin Kaepernick some playing time in the final five games of the season. He has gone 3-for-3 for 35 yards in his only action of the year.
Fantasy Impact: We wouldn't expect much but he could get some mop-up time late in games.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick saw more reps with the first-team offense this week than last, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. Kaepernick was seeing more time with QB Alex Smith (concussion) returning from a concussion. 'He (Kaepernick) is doing a good job,' Harbaugh said. 'I've said it many times. Like a lot of our guys, not where we want to be, yet. But we're working to get there. He's working on a lot of the finer points of the game, and he's doing a very good job of it.'
Fantasy Impact: This is good for the rookie but expect Smith to get the start Week 3. He should be ready.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he wants QB Colin Kaepernick to play with the starters during the third preseason game and could send Kaepernick into the game after a few series.
