Ballard didn't play at all last season because of a major knee injury. He will battle for a roster spot this season. If he can prove he is healthy, Ballard could have a fairly big role with the Patriots, especially early in the season. Ballard has plenty of upside, especially if you consider he caught 38 passes for 604 yards as a rookie. Ballard doesn't have great speed but runs pretty good routes and makes plays in the passing game. He also is a willing blocker that should improve in that area over time.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Ballard is worth a late-round look. He could get some increased playing time early in the season with the Patriots dealing with injuries at tight end to their top two tight ends. If healthy, he could be a factor in a passing game that utilizes the tight end. He is going to be a boom or bust pick, though.

New England Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) has looked sharp during organized team activities and hasn't been limited after having major knee surgery around 16 months ago. Ballard has shown nice hands and will be a nice blocking asset for the team this year. 'I'm doing my best I can to be 100 percent, and I'm doing as much as I can, as much as they're allowing me to do out here,' Ballard said. 'When I'm out here I feel like I'm putting in good work and getting better.'
Fantasy Impact: Ballard could be a nice early-season play as the Patriots starting tight ends get back into shape.

The New England Patriots will be cautious with TE Jake Ballard (knee) during offseason workouts because he is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ballard will be ready for the start of the regular season and some believe he could be a full participant in the workouts.
Fantasy Impact: Ballard has a chance for a big role in the Patriots' offense, an offense that utilizes the tight end often.

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese felt the team was not going to lose TE Jake Ballard on waivers to the New England Patriots. 'Yes, we thought that he would clear,' Reese said. 'It's rare but it's not the first time something like that has happened. It's disappointing for us that we didn't get him back. He did a tremendous job for us and we hope he gets well soon and that he can finish his career, whether it's with New England or whatever team he ends up with. It was disappointing, but that does happen, every blue moon.'

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is not happy that the team lost TE Jake Ballard on waivers to the New England Patriots. 'Discouraged is a minor description,' Coughlin said. 'Very disappointing. I am not going to have a lot to say about that one, just the fact that we are disappointed. We are very disappointed.' New York was high on Ballard despite the fact that he would miss this season with a knee injury.
Fantasy Impact: Yeah, it was surprising to see the Giants cut ties with their young starter from last season. He still has a decent future going forward.
