FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Geno Smith has gone from wide-eyed rookie to respected leader with the New York Jets.

The second-year quarterback entered minicamp practices Tuesday as the starter - ahead of Michael Vick. And Smith intends to keep his spot on the Jets' depth chart.

Smith is confident, even more than last year, when an up-and-down rookie season ended on a positive note with four solid games and the Jets finishing 8-8. Even with the presence of Vick, Smith has managed to establish himself as a leader - in the huddle and outside of it.

Smith, who says he's a ''sponge'' who's learning every day, knows he needs to keep improving in order to erase any doubts as to whether he should be the guy under center in Week 1.
