Wayne primed for breakout

Well, the big game is finally here. It is sad in a way because that means the football season is about over. We have several months to wait until fantasy football begins again. But don't let the offseason get you down too much. The NFL draft is a couple months away and free agency starts shortly. This helps make the time go. Before you know it, training camp will be starting in July.

And just because it is the offseason, you don't need to be sitting on your hands. Keep up with the latest moves to make sure you are ready for 2010. We'll continue to write articles and update notes throughout the entire offseason. Here is to hoping you had a great 2009 and an even better 2010.

News and Notes: The Bears hired Mike Martz to be their offensive coordinator. Martz is a big hire for Jay Culter as his track record for big quarterback numbers is well known. But he could have a adverse impact on tight end Greg Olsen. Martz doesn't have a good history of utilizing the tight end. . . . . .Not that many care, but Texans quarterback Matt Schaub won MVP honors at the Pro Bowl. He led the AFC to a 41-34 victory, going 13-of-17 for 189 yards with two touchdowns. Schaub had a monster season and will be a top-five fantasy quarterback next season. . . . . . .It is looking more and more like Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be traded before the draft. And the top candidates right now seem to be the Bills and Rams, who are both looking for short-term answers at quarterback. . . . . . . .Quarterback Tim Tebow had a rough showing at the Senior Bowl. He answered a lot questions that scouts had for him, but mostly in a negative way. He struggled with his drops, taking a ball from center and with his accuracy. His delivery looked as slow as ever, which is another concern. Tebow has a lot of talent, but some obvious concerns as the draft approaches. It will be interesting to see where he stands.

STRONG PLAYS

Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts. Wayne is due for a big game. He has been relatively quiet the last few weeks. We think he'll show up for the Super Bowl, playing a Saints secondary that has allowed some big passing games this season. The Saints allowed the 10th most fantasy points to receivers during the regular season. They don't have the weapons in the secondary or the shutdown corner to stop Wayne like the Ravens and Jets. Look for Wayne to top the 100-yard mark for the first time since Week 15.

Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints. Thomas had 99 total yards and two touchdowns against a very good Vikings rush defense his last game. He finally seems healthy and is running well in the Saints offense. Thomas could get a few more carries against a Colts defense that could be without Dwight Freeney. Thomas is the best back to use out of all the teams this weekend. The Colts allowed the 12th most fantasy points to running backs during the regular season.

POOR PLAYS

Robert Meachem, WR, Saints. In two playoff games, Meachem has two catches for 19 yards. He just isn't a guy to depend on right now. His ankle injury has slowed him the last several weeks. We look for Devery Henderson and Lance Moore to get a few more chances than Meachem, who hasn't been getting the targets lately. Meachem is a big-play threat, but getting just three targets the last two games is too big of a risk for us to use Meachem.

Reggie Bush, RB, Saints. Bush proved why he drives fantasy owners crazy during the Championship Game. Bush scored two touchdowns and had 108 total yards on nine offensive touches in the Saints playoff opener. In the next game, Bush had seven carries for eight yards, coming back down to earth. He did have a receiving touchdown, but he also lost a fumble in the game. Thomas is the only back to use in the Saints offense right now. Bush is just too up and down for fantasy teams.

SLEEPERS

Austin Collie, WR, Colts. Collie has touchdowns in each of the Colts playoff games. He has 11 catches for 175 yards in two games. He is a huge part of the Colts offense right now, gaining more and more confidence from Peyton Manning. We look for his hot playoff performance to continue against the Saints, who haven't been great stopping the pass much of the season.

Devery Henderson, WR, Saints. Like Collie, Henderson has been a big factor in the playoffs. He has touchdowns in both games and four catches in each game. Henderson is getting more chances with Meachem less than 100 percent. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Henderson break a big play or two against the Colts secondary, which allowed a pretty poor Jets passing game to go for 300 yards in the AFC Championship.

High/Low Scoring Games

Each week we will take a look at some of the high and low scoring games for the coming week. In high scoring affairs, get your marginal players on those teams in your lineup to take advantage of the possible points barrage. And in the low scoring games, keep those marginal players on the bench and make sure to have your defenses involved in those contests.

High Scoring Games: Saints/Colts (duh!).

Low Scoring Games: None.
