Manningham makes big play

Normally, games don't live up to the hype but this Super Bowl certainly did. It fit the theme with the rest of the playoffs, which had a ton of great games. We had all sorts of drama in this game.

The Patriots allowed the Giants to score to get the ball back late. Before that play, New England had a chance to seal the game with a big completion to Wes Welker but the pass was just slightly behind him, bouncing off his hands. And Mario Manningham made a tremendous catch down the sidelines to setup the winning score for the Giants, a catch that was similar to the remarkable grab by David Tyree the last time the Giants were in the Super Bowl. And these were just a few of the big moments of the exciting game.

So as you saw, this game had its ups and downs, making for a highly entertaining game (unless you were a Patriots' fan). Here is to hoping for a similar season in 2012. This season might be hard to top.

Giants 21, Patriots 17

Fantasy Stud: Aaron Hernandez. Surprisingly, we didn't have many huge fantasy performances in this game. Several players had solid games but there wasn't a monster performance. Hernandez was probably the best play of the day, especially in PPR leagues. He caught eight passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Hernandez got more looks with Rob Gronkowski hurting. Hernandez did have a costly drop on the Patriots final drive but played well besides that play. He had 19 receptions and two touchdowns in three playoff games.

Fantasy Dud: Rob Gronkowski. You didn't know how much he would play or how effective he would be, but you knew he would get some chances to make some plays in the game. Unfortunately, he didn't do much with his three targets, catching two passes for 26 yards. He clearly wasn't 100 percent. Before this game, Gronk had 15 receptions for 232 yards and three touchdowns the previous two playoff games. The good news is his ankle should be just fine for the 2012 season. He'll be the top rated fantasy tight end in the game.

Game Notes: Eli Manning won MVP honors. He was 30-of-40 for 296 yards and a touchdown without a turnover. Manning had quite a run in the playoffs, throwing nine touchdowns to just one interception. He also threw for at least 277 yards in every playoff game.

Ahmad Bradshaw had a big showing, rushing 17 times for 72 yards and the game-winning touchdown. He also caught two passes for 19 yards, giving him 91 total yards in the game. He played at less than 100 percent down the stretch because of a foot injury but still produced well. He might need surgery on the foot in the offseason.

The Giants became the lowest ranked defense to win a Super Bowl. Their defense ranked 27th during the regular season. The Patriots' defense ranked 31st, so the record was going to fall during this game.

New York lost two tight ends during the game. Travis Beckum tore his ACL in the second quarter and starter Jake Ballard suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee. Beckum has a much longer road back but Ballard should be ready for the start of 2012 without much issue.
