Introduction

This is the official rulebook of the Platinum Dynasty League.  It is the ultimate authority and final work on all disputes as interpreted by the league Commissioner and the Board of Directors.  All league members are expected to read it and have a firm understanding of the rules and operating procedures of the league.  The Platinum League is a detailed and complex dynasty fantasy football league that allows is members to assume the role of NFL GMs, managing every aspect of their franchise; from drafting players, signing them to contracts, managing their roster and salary cap, and planning for free agency.  The league will be active in some way for approximately 10 months of the calendar year.

  1. Teams and League Format

  • Established GMs have the right to return year-to-year as long as they remain in good standing with the league.

                 1.3 Changing of Membership

  • In the event there is a change in membership, the new GM will keep the same players that were on the roster of the franchise help by the previous GM and will assume all administrative powers of the team. The draft positioning of the team under a new owner will remain the same (including future draft picks that the previous owner had traded).  The lone exception is that the new GM will be credited with any PLD fines, had the previous GM incurred any.

                 1.4 Franchise Name

  • Each GM has the right to select a franchise name of their choice, provided it is in good taste and must follow the Team Name Rule (example: city/team name). The commissioner must approve all franchise names.
  • GMs may also change their franchise name during the offseason. The request must be given to the league office prior to the official start of the new season after the RT rollover (March 1st of each calendar year).  GMs should submit the following information to their proposal to change franchise names: City/Team Name/Logo
  • When a new GM takes over a franchise previously held by another, the new GM has the right to rename the franchise and select a new team logo except during the middle of a season or before the league archives are created by RT, unless otherwise approved by the commissioner.

                    2.2 Rookie Scale

  • Rookie contracts will be determined by the results of the draft.
  • Rookies drafted in the 1st round will be signed to a 4 year contract, with a 5th year option. At the end of the contract GMs will have the option to sign the player to a 5th year, with a 50% increase to the player’s contract in year 5.

  • Players may be started at any position they are started at on their NFL team. However, the players take up a roster spot based on their primary position as shown on RTSports.  They score points on any offensive or defensive play according to our scoring rules.  Example: A WR can score points on a rushing, passing, or special teams play.

                     3.4 Practice Squad

  • The commissioner will add them to the roster with a salary of $0 and no contract years.

To sign a player off a team’s Practice Squad:

  • A GM must claim a practice squad on the league’s Facebook page. The window to claim a practice squad player opens every week, Tuesday morning at 10 AM.
  • If a player on your practice squad is claimed you have 24 hours to match to offer, at which point you must sign the player to your active roster.
  • If you opt not to sign your practice squad player, the offering team signs the practice squad player to their active roster and you are compensated with $10 PLDs.

  1. Contracts

4.1 General Information

  • Players acquired either through free agency (RFA/UFA) or the post draft Late Free Agency (LFA) must be signed to a contract. This contract will be the number of years that the player can remain on your roster before becoming a free agent (FA).

                    4.2 PDL Contracts

  • GMs must sign all players to a contract prior to being activated and available to play.
  • There are three ways players receive their contracts:

                     Entry Draft

  • Players selected in the entry draft are automatically signed to a contract based on their draft position.

                     Waiver Wire/Free Agent Pickups

  • Players acquired by the waiver wire or free agent pickup are automatically signed to a 1 year contract.

                   4.3 Free Agency

  • Players obtained in UFA/RFA/LFA must have their contract announced by the deadline given from the commissioner. If this deadline is not met by a team the contract will default to a 1 year deal.

                   4.4 Maximum Contract Length

  • GMs cannot sign a player to a contract longer that 4 years.

                   4.5 Expired Contracts

  • Contracts formally conclude with the completion of the Platinum League Championship. All players who had 1 year remaining on their contracts become free agents and will be available in the Free Agency sessions.  Players with expired contracts can be re-signed by their original team under the terms outlined in the RFA/UFA/LFA rules.  All other players on the roster will have their contracts reduced by one year.

                    4.6 Contract Extensions

  • Teams may elect to attempt to extend the contracts of their players at a cost of $10 PLDs per player, per attempt.
  • Players that signed in RFA/UFA/LFA or were drafted in the rookie entry draft are not eligible to extend their contract in the same season in which the transaction was made.
  • Players picked up via waiver wire or free agent pickup are eligible to be extended
  • Contract extensions are limited to players with 1 or 2 years left on their contract.
  • There will be 5 periods throughout the calendar year that GMs may opt to extend a player’s contract. Timeline will be announced by the commissioner.
  • If a GM attempts to extend a player’s contract, the following protocol is in place:
  • The commissioner will announce that the contract period has opened
  • The GM informs the commissioner that they would like to exercise the option to attempt to extend the contract of one of their players.
  • The commissioner will have a live dice roll to determine if the player is willing to accept an extension. The dice roll will be broadcast using some type of technology or live broadcast software such as Skype, Zoom, Facebook
  • If the dice roll is even, the player will accept an opportunity to extend their contract.
  • If the dice is odd, the player denies the opportunity to extend
  • If the extension is agreed upon, the commissioner will perform another live dice roll to determine the player’s new contract.
  • A roll of 1 will result in a player extending their contract with a 50% pay increase.
  • A roll of 2 or 4 will result in a player extending their contract with a 25% pay increase.
  • A roll of 3 or 6 will result in a player extending their contract with a 10% pay increase.
  • A roll of 5 will result in a stalemate and the player refuses any further contract negotiations with the team until the following season.
  • Once the salary has been established the commissioner will perform another live dice roll to determine the length of the new contract.
  • A roll or 2 or 4 will result in a three year contract extension
  • A roll of 3 or 6 will result in a two year contract extension.
  • A roll of 1 or 5 will result in a one year contract extension.
  • In the event that a player refuses to extend his contract the GM does NOT get their $10 PLDs back.
  • You can attempt to extend a player’s contract as many times as you wish during the year as long as its during a contract extension period, you have the PLDs to do so, and a player did NOT roll a 5 during the time of the dice roll.
  • Players that extend their contract cannot renegotiate their salary in the same season.
  • A player can only successfully extend/renegotiate their contract once per season.
  • Players that are in a stalemate with their current team will be permitted to extend/renegotiate with their new team following a trade as it reflects a relationship.

                    4.7 Contract Renegotiations

  • Teams may elect to attempt to renegotiate the contract of a player to reduce their salary at a cost of $10 PLDs per player, per attempt.
  • Players that signed in RFA/UFA/LFA or were drafted in the rookie entry draft are not eligible to renegotiate their contract in the same season in which the transaction was made.
  • Contract renegotiations are limited to players with 2 years or more left on their contracts.
  • If the dice roll is even, the player will accept an opportunity to renegotiate their contract.
  • If the dice is odd, the player denies the opportunity to renegotiate.
  • If the renegotiation is agreed upon, the commissioner will perform another live dice roll to determine the player’s new contract.
  • A roll of 1 will result in a player extending their contract with a 50% pay cut.
  • A roll of 2 or 4 will result in a player extending their contract with a 25% pay cut.
  • A roll of 3 or 6 will result in a player extending their contract with a 10% pay cut.
  • A roll of 5 will result in a stalemate and the player refuses any further contract negotiations with the team until the following season.
  • Once the salary has been established the commissioner will perform another live dice roll to determine the length of the new contract.
  • A roll of 2, 4, or 6 will result in a three year contract.
  • A roll of 1, 3, or 5 will result in a two year contract.
  • In the event that a player refuses to renegotiate his contract the GM does NOT get their $10 PLDs back.
  • You can attempt to renegotiate a player’s contract as many times as you wish during the year as long as its during a contract renegotiation period, you have the PLDs to do so, and a player did NOT roll a 5 during the time of the dice roll.
  • Players that renegotiate their contract cannot extend their contract in the same season.
  • A player can only successfully extend/renegotiate their contract once per season.
  • Players that are in a stalemate with their current team will be permitted to extend/renegotiate with their new team following a trade as it reflects a relationship.

                      4.8 Contract Buyouts

  • Teams may buy out the contract of a player to release him at the cost of $20 PLDs. The team will incur a salary cap penalty of 50% of the player’s contract.

                      4.9 Player Retirement

  • Any player who retires, or is declared retired by the league commissioner may not be drafted or acquired through any other means by a PDL team. The player must be released and no other team may pick up the player.  The team is not charged with a buyout fee.  The player cannot be added to an active PDL roster unless their NFL status changes.  The team will not incur a salary cap hit.

                      4.10 Player Death

  • Any active PDL player who passes away while under a PDL contract will be taken off the team’s roster immediately and the team will not be charged with a buyout fee. The team will not incur a salary cap hit.

                      4.11 Player Suspension

  • Any active PDL player who is suspended by the NFL while under PDL contract will be placed on a suspended list. The team will receive a roster spot for the player, and their salary and contract will not count against the cap.  The commissioner will place the suspended player on the IR to free up the roster space.

                      4.12 Contract Absolution

  • Teams may drop players with only 1 year remaining on their current contract prior to the start of UFA session, deadline to be announced by the commissioner, without paying the buyout fee or taking a salary cap hit. The players will be added to the free agent pool.

  1. Salary Cap/Salaries

5.1 Salary Cap Limit

  • Each franchise has a $260 million salary cap that they must manage. It is a hard cap, meaning that the team cannot exceed the cap by any amount during the time the cap is in effect.  The cap is not applicable from the start of RFA until the completion of LFA.  This figure may increase but it will be at the discretion of the commissioner or by league vote.

                       5.1a Salary Cap Increase

  • Every two years the league will be given the opportunity to increase the cap. We will hold a live dice roll to determine if the cap will increase.
  • If the roll is even the cap will increase
  • If the roll is odd the cap remains the same
  • If the cap increases, it will do so by an amount of $5 million.

                       5.2 Non Transferable Cap

  • Salary cap space is non-transferable. Owners may not trade salary cap space to another team.

                     5.3 Salaries Defined

  • Annual Salary – This figure is what the amount of money each player makes per year they are under contract. Ex. James Connor receives $12 million per year.
  • Total Salary – This figure is the multiplied total of the annual salary by the number of contract years. Ex. James Connor is signed to a 2 year deal; his total salary is $24 million.

                      5.4 Minimum Salary

  • The minimum salary for players is $1 million. Any veteran who is claimed during the regular season via the waiver wire or free agent pickup (following waivers) only receives a 1 year deal and defaults to a $1 million salary.

                      5.5 Releasing a Player

  • Any player released from a team will result in the team incurring a cap hit immediately in the season that the player was dropped. The cap hit for releasing a player is 50% of their salary. Ex. James Connor is making $12 million per year. If he’s cut the cap hit will be $6 million.

  1. Transactions

6.1 Trades

  • GMs may trade players at any time throughout the calendar year that trading is not restricted. To make a trade, the GMs involved in the trade must be proposed and accepted using the RTSports site.  All trades are considered official and will be processed immediately.  Players traded must fit within the team’s salary cap.

                      6.1a Trading of Draft Picks

  • To trade draft picks, the GMs must declare which round/year draft picks are involved in the trade and the team that owns the pick.
  • Draft picks may only be traded 2 seasons in advance.
  • All picks from all rounds are eligible to be traded.

6.1b Trading of Platinum League Dollars (PLDs)

  • Teams may only trade PLDs for the current season of play. This is done through the RTSports trade option.

                         6.1c Trade Terms and Conditions

  • If a GM does not return to the league the next season, the replacement GM is bound to the terms of any trade made during the previous GMs tenure involving future draft picks as if he had made the trade himself.
  • In the event that a GM leaves the league within 1 month of a trade being made, the commissioner may reverse or veto the trade.
  • The commissioner has the power to veto any trade that is deemed to be extremely lopsided or not in the best interest of the league.

                         6.1d Contract and Salary Status

  • Every player traded carries his contract and salary status with him, including the current year. Teams cannot trade for a player if it puts them over the salary cap.  If this happens, the commissioner will void the trade until such time as the affected teams can make room under the contract cap.  GMs are then free to negotiate with other teams on any players involved in the voided transaction.
  • Players that are in a stalemate with their current team that are traded will be permitted to extend/renegotiate with their new team as it reflects a new relationship.

                         6.1e Trade Deadline

  • The deadline for all trades for the season is 11:59 PM Wednesday of week 10 of the regular season, date to be announced by the commissioner.

                       6.2 Releasing a Player

  • You must buy out a contract of any player before you can release him at a cost of $10 PLDs. Any player released from a team will result in the team incurring a cap hit for their salary.  The cap hit for releasing a player is 50% of their salary.

6.3 Acquiring a Player via Waiver Wire (In Season Free Agency)

  • GMs may place bids on UFAs during the waiver wire period each week during the regular season
  • The waiver wire will last from Tuesday morning until Thursday morning at 10 AM.
  • All waiver wire bids on UFAs will be blind using the RTSports site.
  • Bids will be made using PLDs from each team’s PLD vault.
  • The team with the highest bid will be awarded the UFA.
  • All players picked up via waivers are signed to a 1 year contract and a default salary of $1 million.
  • Waiver wire player distribution occurs every Thursday between 10 AM and 2 PM starting week 2 of the regular season and ending during the week of the League Championship.
  • Teams that bid higher than the amount of PLDs in their vault will have the transaction automatically voided by the RTSports site and will subject to a $50 PLD fine.
  • In the event of a tie bid, the tiebreaker will be awarded to the GM that placed their bid first as recorded by RTSports.

6.4 Acquiring a Player via Player Pickup

  • The open period for roster transactions will begin every Thursday at 2 PM and end Monday at 8:59 PM.
  • Players picked up via player pickup are signed to a 1 year contract and have a default salary of $1 million.
  • Players may not be signed once that player’s game has started during the week. This means that players in Thursday or Saturday games will be restricted from the pickup period once their games begin.

                         6.5 Injured Reserve (IR)

  • For a player to be put on IR he must be listed as having an injury on RTSports in any capacity. Any player added to the IR must be posted in the appropriate thread on the League Facebook page before being transferred to the IR.
  • Any player placed on IR is out for the rest of the season and cannot be used until the following season. The player remains property of the team and his salary does not count towards the salary cap or the 30 man roster limit.
  • Each team may designate 2 players to return from IR. This is limited to 2 players per team no matter the injury or return status, per season
  • Once a player is placed on IR the team can pick up another player but they must go through the waiver wire or player pickup.
  • Players on IR can be traded but must remain on the IR with their new team and the team receiving the player must have a slot open on their IR.
  • By the start of the next season’s FA session the commissioner will clear IR of injured players.
  • Covid 19 Rule – Players placed on NFL IR due to Covid 19 will be allowed to return to the team’s active roster once they are removed from the Covid 19 IR list.

  • Platinum League Dollars (PLDs)

   7.1 PLDs Defined

  • The “Platinum League Dollar” is the official currency of The Platinum League. PLDs are used to bid on free agents during the regular season as well as the RFA/UFA/LFA periods.  They may also be used in trade situations.  Each team is initially awarded $300 PLDs and will receive a fresh allotment of $300 each upcoming season, given automatically after RTSports rolls the year.  Any amount not used during the season is carried over to the next.
  • It is the responsibility of each GM to monitor their accounts and report any potential discrepancies to the commissioner.

                         7.1a Trading PLDs

  • Teams my only trade PLDs for the current season of play.

                        7.2 PLD Awards

  • In addition to the yearly allotment of $300 PLDs there will be opportunities that teams can earn additional PLDs. These will be in the form of post season awards for individual players.

  • Free Agency (RFA/UFA/LFA)

   8.1 Free Agency Defined

  • The RFA/UFA/LFA session is the league’s free agent system where players with expired/no contracts can move from team to team. Next to the draft these sessions are the most important components for managing and building your team.
  • The annual Free Agency session begins in May and runs through the entire month.
  • Any player not under contract is eligible to participate in the FA session.
  • The FA schedule will be announced by the commissioner
  • Late Free Agency will be announced by the commissioner and take place after the rookie entry draft and prior to the start of the new season.

                         8.1a Restricted Free Agency (RFA)

  • Any player with 3 years of NFL service or less, based on their rating in RTSports, that is not under contract is a restricted free agent (RFA).
  • Players must be on the roster of a franchise at the end of the season to be eligible for RFA.
  • The cost to offer a tender to a RFA is $25 PLDs
  • GMs may provide a tender offer to any player on their roster prior to the RFA period on any player that meets the requirement.
  • If a player does not receive a tender offer he is an unrestricted free agent (UFA).
  • RFA players that are tendered must receive a minimum of a $3 million salary, but offers can be more to make it less likely that another team will pursue them in RFA.

RFA contracts are based on the salary offered

Tier 4 Tender - $3 million – 1 year contract

Tier 3 Tender - $5 million – 1 year contract

Tier 2 Tender - $6 -$9 million – 2 year contract

Tier 1 Tender - $10 million or more – 3 year contract

Compensation for RFA players will be as follows:

Tier 4 Tender – No Compensation

Tier 3 Tender – 3rd round pick

Tier 2 Tender – 2nd round pick

Tier 1 Tender – 1st round pick

*Picks must be in the upcoming draft

  • The RFA period will run prior to the Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) period and must adhere to the following protocol:
  • Teams must designate qualifying tender offers by the deadline announced by the commissioner
  • There will be a list of RFAs and their tenders/compensation posted by the commissioner
  • The commissioner will open the RFA session. During this time GMs may bid on RFAs. Bids are placed on RFAs on the league Facebook page on the thread designated for RFAs with the following information: Name and position of player and the salary amount offered (bid).
  • The RFA period will last 2 days. During this time GMs have the opportunity to bid on tendered players. After 2 days any tendered players not bid on by other GMs will be signed to their teams from which they were tendered, and their contracts will be determined on their original offer (see above list).
  • Once a tendered player is bid on, other GMs can engage in bidding on the same players. The GM that offered the tender holds the rights to the player and does not need to bid during this period.  The highest bid that is submitted for a player, and is held as the highest bid for a 24 straight hours will have signed that player to an offer sheet at the price when the bid officially closed.
  • The winning GM must have in their possession the appropriate pick compensation available. Failure to have the appropriate compensation at the end of the bidding will result in their bids being nullified and the previous high bidder, if any, signing the player to the offer sheet.
  • GMs may bid more than the salary for each tier threshold, but they must be at least the threshold minimum for each tier. Regardless of the salary, the compensation will be awarded based on the tier that the original GM tendered.
  • Once the bidding has concluded, the tendering GM has 24 hours to either match the offer sheet, or accept the compensation for the loss of the player. Failure to declare their intentions within the 24 hour window will result in declining to match and subsequently awarding the player to the GM that signed the offer sheet.  The previous GM will still get any owed draft pick compensation.
  • In the event that the new GM has multiple picks, the GM sending the compensation will select the pick awarded to the GM that lost their player.

                         8.1b Unrestricted Free Agency (UFA)

  • Players that are not under contract or have 4 years or more of NFL experience are Unrestricted Free Agents and are available to be bid on during the UFA session. Any player that is listed as Free Agent on the RTSports site is available to participate in UFA.
  • Teams will bid on players using their PLDs in their vault. Player’s salaries will be based on the winning bids of the player. Ex. James Connor is won in UFA for $26 PLDs, his new salary would be $32 million per year.
  • If a bid is placed on a player that has the Transition Tag by another GM, that GM has a right to match that high bid within the bidding period. It is the responsibility of the GM to keep track of the bids on his players.
  • If you wish to keep your player you must place a bid that exceeds the highest bid on the board for your player.
  • The winning bid amount is determined when a high bidder holds the high bid for 24 straight hours.
  • GMs may not bid more PLDs on players than they possess.
  • GMs will announce the number of contract years they are signing the player by the deadline given by the commissioner or they will default to a 1 year contract.
  • The contract length for any UFA is 1-4 years

                         8.1c Late Free Agency (LFA)

  • LFA will be held in August after the rookie draft and will follow the same format as UFA.
  • GMs are not required to participate in LFA, but may do so to round out their team or add players to their practice squad.
  • Any player not signed on an active team is eligible to be bid on during LFA.

  1. Franchise and Transition Tags

   9.1 Franchise Tag – $100 PLDs

  • Each season a team may elect to use their Franchise Tag on any player who has an expired contract. The guarantees that said player will receive the average of the top 5 contracts at their position of the previous season. The contract is for 1 year and will become a free agent the following season unless the GM extends, renegotiates their contract or places the tag on them again.
  • Each franchise will be allowed to use the Franchise Tag once each season.
  • The Franchise Tag can only be used on players who are UFA.
  • Players with the Franchise Tag placed on them can be traded, but they carry the terms of the tag with them to their new team.

                         9.2 Transition Tag - $100 PLDs

  • Each season a team may elect to use their Transition Tag on any player who has an expired contract. This guarantees that the team will receive compensation if the player is signed be another team.
  • Each GM will be allowed to use the Transition Tag once each season.
  • The Transition Tag must be declared prior to UFA, deadline to be announced by the commissioner.
  • The Transition Tag can only be used on players who are UFA.
  • Transition Tagged players participate in UFA and are available to be big on throughout the entire UFA period.
  • If a player that has the Transition Tag placed on him is signed by another team during the UFA period the team that signs him must compensate the player’s former team with a draft pick, based on the level of compensation that the Transition Tagged player will warrant.
  • In the event that the team has multiple picks, the team sending the compensation will select the pick awarded to the team that lost their player.
  • The compensation for Transition Tags must be in the upcoming draft.
  • The commissioner must approve all compensatory picks.
  • All tagged players must receive a minimum of 1 year contract. They are automatically awarded this contract. GMs may sign them to any number of contract years as they see fit with a maximum of a 3 year contract.
  • In the event the player signs with another team, the team does not receive the PLDs back. If a GM does not have sufficient PLDs to cover the cost of the Transition Tag they will be excluded from using their tag.

                         9.2a Transition Tag Contract Amount/Length

  • A player given the Transition Tag can be awarded one of the following contract length options depending on the salary tier that you offer.
  • $1 - $4 million – 1 year contract
  • $5 - $9 million – 2 year contract
  • $10 million and higher – 3 year contract

                         9.2b Transition Tag Compensation

  • Compensation will go hand in hand with how much you bid on a player. The more money you spend, the bigger the compensation.  The picks you send as compensation will be the lowest you own per round.
  • Transition Tag compensation is as follows:
  • $1-$4 million – 3rd round pick
  • $5-$9 million – 2nd round pick
  • $10 million and higher – 1st round pick
