2019 Armchair Football League
THE DRAFT
The draft is on the Tuesday night following labor day. I’d like to get everyone ready to go by about 7:00 central so we can get the draft started by 7:30. Please let me know who is planning on being at my house or who will be drafting from home.
LEAGUE STRUCTURE AND SCHEDULE
There will be no divisions or conferences. The schedule for each week of the regular season will consist of each team playing individual match ups against every other team in the league. The regular season will run from week 1 through week 14 of the NFL season. Based on a 12 team league and a 14 week regular season, with each team playing 11 different games/match ups each week, each team will play 168 games in the regular season. There is no longer a "tie breaker" player. Ties will factor into a team's overall W-L-T record.
The Postseason: As in past years, six teams will advance to the postseason, based on cumulative regular season W-L-T, with the two top teams receiving a bye in the first week (week 15 of the NFL season). Post season games will now also follow the cumulative format used in the regular season. In week 1 of the post season, the highest two teams will have a bye, and the remaining 4 teams play against each other, with the 2 top scoring teams advancing to the next round of playoffs. In week 2, the 2 teams on bye and the 2 teams who prevailed and advanced in the 1st playoff round will all 4 play each other, again following the cumulative format with the top 2 high scoring teams remaining teams advancing to the final/Super Bowl in week 17 of the NFL season.
ROSTER COMPOSITION / WEEKLY LINEUPS
The starting lineups will consist of 12 players: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 3 Flex positions* (1 QB + 2 RB/WR/TE OR 3 RB/WR/TE ), 1 Kicker, 2 IDP Flex positions (Any combination of Defensive Lineman, Linebacker and/or Defensive Back).
SCORING
1. Defense:
(a) There will no longer be points awarded for a defensive shutout;
(b) 1 point will be awarded to a player who is credited with a forced fumble;
(c) 2 points will be awarded to a player who is credited with a fumble recovery (thus, note that if a player forces the fumble and recovers it, 3 total points will be awarded);
(d) 3 points will be awarded to a player who is credited with an interception (which is equal to the points awarded to a player who forces and recovers a fumble);
(e) a player credited with a tackle will receive 1 point;
(f) a player credited with a tackle assist will receive 0.5 points per assist;
(g) a player credited with a sack will receive 2 points
(h) a player credited with successfully defending an incomplete pass will receive 1 point;
(i) individual defensive players that score a touchdown (interceptions and fumble returns) will receive 6 points; and
(j) individual defensive players that are credited with a safety will receive 3 points.
2. Offense: In general, offense scoring remains the same as it has with a couple of exceptions:
(a) Kicking: Field goals up to 49 yards long receive 3 points, and those of 50 or more receive 4 points. Kickers will still receive a 1 point deduction for missed field goals between 1 and 49 yards.
(b) The league will be a PPR (points per reception) format. All offensive players will receive 1 point per reception.
WAIVER WIRE AND ADD/DROP TRANSACTIONS; FREE AGENT ACQUISITION BUDGET
There will still be an initial waiver wire transaction period with the same deadlines as in past years, however instead of having our waiver wire order run from worst to first, the league will use a FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) format. Each team will receive 100 credits in their budget at the start of the season for the duration of the year. Each week owners can blindly bid on available players, by submitting a requested acquisition (and drop) with a fixed bid amount. In the event two or more teams bid for a player, the owner with the highest bid is awarded the player when the
transactions are processed, and the amount bid is deducted from the annual budget. How much an owner chooses to bid is up to the owner. If the highest bid is a tie, the team with the worst record wins the selection. There is no minimum bid, so if a team is out of credits (or they want to bluff or just see if they get lucky on an acquisition), owners may submit a $0 dollar bid (a high bid of $1 will still win the selection in that circumstance). Last, even if a bid was in excess of the amount needed to have won, the entire bid amount (not the winning bid amount) is deducted from the annual
budget. As we did in past years, after the waiver wire transactions have been processed, there will then be an open add/drop period which will be awarded on a first come basis (with no bidding).
In addition, instead of players being blocked from being picked up until the following waiver, players will be ‘unlocked’ and available for transactions 24 hours after the player was dropped. So, for example, if a player is dropped as part of a waiver transaction on Wednesday night, he will be available for an add/drop pickup on Thursday night.
INJURED RESERVE
Injured Reserve: The league will have an Injured Reserve format/option. There is not a maximum number of players you can put on the I/R if they are eligible. To be eligible for placement on an I/R, a player's injury status will need to be listed by RTS as “out or worse” at the time of the move to the I/R (we will utilize whatever status has been assigned by the software system at the time of designation). Further, if a player’s status changes and is not listed as “out or worse” (according to the NFL injury report's designation when the NFL requires NFL teams to submit their injury report for the week), then no later than 24 hours prior to the start of that week's game for that player, the player must be removed from the I/R by the owner and the team roster must be brought into compliance with the applicable restrictions. If a player on I/R is not deemed to be I/R eligible according to this rule and the owner has not removed that player from the I/R at least 24 hours prior to the start of that player's game for that week, then at that point, the commissioner shall attempt to contact the owner(s) by text, email or telephone and allow the owner(s) a 3 hour period in which to cure the violation. If the violation is not corrected by the owner within 3 hours of notification, then as soon thereafter as possible, the commissioner will manually move the subject player(s) from I/R to the active roster and will manually drop a player from that team's roster in such a way to correct the violation. In so doing, since owners will not be allowed to exceed roster maximums, the commissioner will drop the last player acquired by that team (through waiver wire picks and/or open add/drop), unless by doing so it will leave the team's roster minimums/maximums out of compliance. Should that be the case, then in chronological order of acquisition, the commissioner will drop a player to bring that team's roster into compliance. So for example, when the first game of the week is Thursday at 7:00 pm central (and a player on the I/R is to play in that game but has now been designated on the team's NFL injury report as better than Out or worse), then by 7:00 pm central Wednesday, the owner must move that player off the I/R and back onto the active roster, as well as dropping a player as necessary, to bring that team's roster in overall compliance. If the owner does not do so by 7:00 pm Wednesday, the commissioner will notify the owner to correct its roster and will have 3 hours in which to do so. If they owner does not correct the roster within three hours of notification, the commissioner will move that player back to the active roster (and will drop a required player). If, however, a player on the I/R's status changes to better than out or worse but his team does not play its game that week until Monday night at 7:00 pm, then the deadline for the owner of that player to move him back to the active roster and bring the roster back into compliance will be Sunday night at 7:00 pm, etc. ADDITIONAL RULE ADDED AT START OF 2021 SEASON: Other than with the exception of players which are drafted at the commencement of a season, no team shall be permitted to utilize the waiver wire and/or add-drops to pick up a player who's status is Out or worse and then move that player to the I/R. The intention of this rule is to specifically prevent any owner from picking up injured players and then essentially storing them on the I/R. Any player who is listed as Out or worse at the time of the waiver or add-drop addition to a team may not be moved the I/R unless and until after that player's status improves to no longer injured, so that if that player later becomes injured or re-injured and again become I/R eligible, they then may be moved to the I/R.
LEAGUE FEES
League fees will be $110 per team plus $1 per player acquired after the completion of week 1 (this gives owners the chance to modify their teams after the draft without any fee).
Money awards: The amount of money available for distribution will always depend on the number of teams in the league.
1. Of the total amount paid by all teams for entry fees, the annual RTS league fee paid by the commissioner to RTS will first be deducted from the the total pool amount, which is typically around $81. Of the remaining total pool amount:
2. The team with weekly high score will receive $15 per week (using a 13 week regular season schedule, a total of $195 will be awarded to the weekly high score winners). The $195 will be deducted from the pool.
3. The remaining amount will be distributed based on the following percentages:
Winner of Super Bowl: 85%
Loser of Super Bowl: $15%
4. Transaction fees will be awarded in two categories based on the following percentages:
Team with best W-L-T for weeks 8 through 13: 1/3 of transaction fees; and
Team with best W-L-T for the entire regular season: 2/3 of transaction fees.
NFL PICK EM
For an added level of fun, I’ve added an NFL Pick Em to the league. This is an add-on and does not have any bearing on team scoring, league standings or any postseason factors. This is also purely optional. If an owner wants to participate, they need to let the commissioner know by draft night. For those that elect to play, there will be a $10 entry fee. The Pick Em will run the duration of the NFL regular season (17 weeks). At the end of the regular season, the owner with the most correctly predicted wins will receive 75% of the pool, and the owner with the second most correctly predicted wins will receive 25%. This will be based on all regular season games, so if you forget to make your picks one week, you will receive 0 points, although those games will count in the overall season total. As the amount of the pool will depend on the number of owners in the league who elect to play, so will the division of the pool. For those owners who do not elect to enter the pool, you will still be able to make weekly picks, but you will not receive any winnings. Only those owners who enter the pool have a chance at winnings. So for example, if an owner finishes third in overall standings, but the owners with the top two records did not pay or enter the pool, the third place owner will be deemed the 1st finisher and so forth.
