Tampa Bay Rays southpaw Shane McClanahan will miss his second consecutive season after undergoing a surgical procedure on Monday to attempt to repair a nerve problem in his pitching arm.

Rays manager Kevin Cash informed reporters of McClanahan's status before his team opened a three-game set against the Athletics in West Sacramento.

The two-time All-Star pitcher underwent Tommy John surgery in the summer of 2023 and did not compete last year. He appeared to be on his way to regaining his spot in the rotation with a strong start in spring training, but developed a nerve problem in his left triceps. He was placed on the 15-day injured list, then transferred to the 60-day list before starting a rehab assignment on July 9.

He made three minor-league starts, but was shut down with biceps tendinitis.

McClanahan debuted with the Rays during the 2020 playoffs and put together three outstanding seasons from 2021-23. He compiled a record of 33-16 with a 3.02 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.

The Baltimore native earned All-Star honors in 2022 and 2023 and finished sixth in Cy Young voting in 2022, when he fanned 194 batters in 166 1/3 innings with a 2.54 ERA.
