Willson Contreras Jun 27 3:00pm ET

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras led off for the first time on Monday in D.C. against the Nationals and made the most of it with a home run in his first at-bat. Contreras is now hitting .252/.318/.433 on the year and has been starting more often recently over Miguel Montero. In a rough fantasy catcher landscape, Contreras remains an option that has some pretty decent upside.

Jason Heyward Jun 27 2:20pm ET

Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward (hand) hit off a tee for the first time on Monday and said his hand still needs more time to heal. Heyward noted there's new skin and his hand is still very tender. Until Heyward feels he can take regular, everyday at-bats, he will continue trying to heal. With a line of just .258/.315/.399 this year, there should be better fantasy options to chase in the outfield right now.

Chris Tillman Jun 27 1:50pm ET

Over the weekend Chris Tillman made a start against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite Baltimore winning the game 8-5, they got little help from Tillman. He lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Outside of his first start, he has been downright awful this season. Hitters are batting .362 off of him, he has a hard hit % of 36.3%, and his HR/FB is at 17.9%. His .392 BABIP is sky high, but when your ERA and WHIP for the season are 8.39 and 2.18 respectively even if when positively regresses the results still aren't close to good enough. If anyone is thinking about grabbing Tillman, don't until he shows us some signs of life.

Kevin Gausman Jun 27 1:50pm ET

Kevin Gausman made some notable improvements in his last start, despite taking yet another loss. Against a stout Cleveland Indians offense on June 21, he pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. The nine strikeouts were a season high, and it was the first time during the month of June he allowed less than four runs. During this outing he threw his split-finger fastball 23.2% of the time, and his slider only 6.2%. He has thrown the two pitches a similar amount this season, though hitters are killing the slider hitting .429 off the pitch compared to .247 for the splitter. Bench him for his start on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays, but watch to see if this is a permanent change.

Trey Mancini Jun 27 1:40pm ET

Trey Mancini has been on an offensive tear for the Baltimore Orioles this month. During June, he has hit .365/.407/.706 with seven home runs, 16 runs scored, and 19 runs batted in. His strikeout rate has been 25.3% this month, which is a slight improvement from the 26.4% K% he's posted for the season. Mancini is proving to be more than a flash in the pan for Baltimore, he looks like the real deal offensively. He will continue to see regular playing time even when Chris Davis returns. He is hitting far too well to be removed from the lineup any time soon.

Jonathan Schoop Jun 27 1:40pm ET

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop has been having a career-year at the plate for the Baltimore Orioles. Not only have fantasy owners been excited about him, manager Buck Showalter has noticed also. On Thursday he was moved from the sixth spot in the order up to the third spot. Over the past four games hitting higher in the order, he has hit .333/.474/.600 with a home run and five runs batted in. The move up should boost his RBI and run scoring opportunities, increasing his fantasy value even further if he can maintain the third spot.

Chris Smith Jun 27 12:53pm ET

Toronto Blue Jays RHP Chris Smith is likely to be recalled from Class AAA Buffalo on Tuesday, June 27.

Justin Verlander Jun 27 12:40pm ET

Detroit Tiger starting pitcher Justin Verlander will toe the rubber against Kansas City today, but fantasy owners are advised that starting JV against the Royals could be a risky move. Current Kansas City batters have fared rather well against Verlander in his career, with a combined 12 home runs off Verlander lifetime. Verlander has had a particularly tough time against Salvador Perez, who owns a .418 average against JV with 14 career RBI against him. Given the Tigers' recent struggles, it might not be a bad idea to leave Verlander on the bench for this one.

Ricky Nolasco Jun 27 12:40pm ET

Angels' starter Ricky Nolasco left Monday's game in the seventh inning with a shin injury. He had thrown 6 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up five hits and two walks on 84 pitches. He struck out five. The injury is not expected to cost Nolasco any time, and he should make his next scheduled start. Nolasco earned the win to go to 3-9 on the season, and he lowered his ERA to 4.86. He has a 5.73 FIP and only 76 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings, and should not be owned except in the deepest of fantasy formats. Nolasco's next scheduled start will be at home against the Seattle Mariners.

    Jae-gyun Hwang Jun 27 12:23pm ET

San Francisco Giants minor-league 3B Jae-Gyun Hwang is reportedly planning to use the opt-out in his contract if he's not called up to the majors by Saturday, July 1.

Jacob Stallings Jun 27 12:13pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates C Jacob Stallings was optioned Class AAA Indianapolis on Monday, June 26.

Eddie Butler Jun 27 12:00pm ET

Chicago Cubs starter Eddie Butler was excellent on Monday in D.C. against the Nationals throwing five innings for four hits, no walks, and no runs. The rest of the team also held on enough to give Butler the win. Butler now owns a 3.71 ERA over nine starts this year, but manager Joe Maddon still shows an unwillingness to let him pitch very far into games. Butler threw only 64 pitches on Monday - his fewest in any start this year. Perhaps this time Butler was yanked due to the heart of the Nationals order coming up. Butler has not pitched six innings since his first start in May and remains unrosterable in quality start leagues unless wildly desperate for ratio help. Teammate Mike Montgomery has pitched quality starts his last two outings and it raises the question of who Kyle Hendricks will replace when he returns to the rotation.

Manuel Margot Jun 27 11:53am ET

San Diego Padres OF Manuel Margot (calf) is expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday, June 27.

Corey Hart Jun 27 11:43am ET

Free-agent OF Corey Hart (Pirates) will retire as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.

    A.J. Pollock Jun 27 9:40am ET

Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock (groin/quad) is expected to play another rehab game for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Pollock played his first rehab game on Sunday as he makes his way back from a quad injury he suffered while recovering from a groin strain. In his first game Pollock played four innings and registered three at-bats. If he suffers no further set backs, look for Pollock to return within the next couple of weeks.

Chris Sale Jun 27 8:10am ET

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball Monday against the Twins. Sale allowed four hits and walked two with the lone run coming off the bat of Chris Gimenez when he went deep to left center field. Sale struck out nine in the contest and recorded his 10th with of the season. His next start comes Saturday against the Blue Jays.

Adeiny Hechavarria Jun 27 5:00am ET

Miami Marlins trade shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to the Tampa Bay Rays for two minor leaguers. Hechavarria is expected to be ready soon to come off the disabled list. When he is active, he is expected to be the starting shortstop. Hechavarria's defense is elite but unfortunately for fantasy managers, his offense is mediocre and thus not all that useful for fantasy. This move could cause a series of effects on other Rays players once Hechavarria is called up. Tim Beckham will help out at second base and be a super utility player that might even see some time in the outfield. The Rays say they still plan for Matt Duffy to play in the majors sometime in 2017. Daniel Robertson may end up being sent down to the minors to get regular playing time.

Cole Hamels Jun 27 3:40am ET

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Cole Hamels was ineffective against the Indians on Monday, allowing seven runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. The lefty threw 10 of his first 11 pitches out of the strike zone, and left the game having tallied an ugly 1:4 K:BB ratio. Hamels' inability to miss bats was a problem prior to his placement on the disabled list, and it doesn't look like much has changed. Those who wish to be charitable could call this an opportunity to knock off the rust after spending two months away from the big club, but he should probably spend time on the bench until he shows the ability to control his pitches. His ERA ballooned to 4.38 as a result of the shaky outing.

Ricky Nolasco Jun 27 1:03am ET

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RHP Ricky Nolasco (leg) exited his start in the seventh inning Monday, June 26, against the Los Angeles Dodgers after taking a line drive off his leg.

Matt Holliday Jun 27 12:13am ET

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees OF Matt Holliday (rest) is still experiencing fatigue issues and was sent for more tests as a result, according to manager Joe Girardi.
