Yasmany Tomas Jan 18 7:50pm ET

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas was arrested in Arizona on Thursday morning after allegedly driving 105 mph. Tomas was charged with reckless driving and criminal speeding. He was not impaired at the time of the arrest. Tomas could face jail time and a fine, given the charges, but an MLB suspension is unlikely. Jayson Werth received no discipline from MLB after a similar incident three years ago.

Brad Ziegler Jan 18 6:15pm ET

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Brad Ziegler (rib) said in an interview on Fantasy Sports Radio on Wednesday that he tried to pitch through a rib injury last season, which he initially suffered in the first week of spring training. The injury went unreported and the veteran reliever tried to gut it out even though he admitted it made it difficult for him to breathe during the first half. Ziegler eventually went on the disabled list and missed five weeks with what the Marlins called a right back strain. He had a 6.52 ERA at the time but returned to post a 2.00 ERA the rest of the way. Ziegler is slated to open 2018 as the Marlins closer and could be in line for a bounce-back season if the injury was largely responsible for his first-half struggles. Of course, if he does pitch well, he will be a good bet to be traded somewhere to be a setup man for a contender.

Jose Cardona Jan 18 5:43pm ET

The Texas Rangers signed C Curt Casali, OF Jose Cardona, RHP Tayler Scott to minor league contracts Thursday, Jan. 18. The deals include invitations to spring training.

Jeremy Jeffress Jan 18 4:00pm ET

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress pleaded guilty to a DWI charge on Tuesday stemming from a 2016 arrest. He was suspended 50 games in 2007 and for 100 games in 2009 for substance abuse when he was in the minors. The right-handed reliever struggled with a 4.68 ERA in 65 1/3 innings between the Rangers and Brewers. He'll serve in a setup role for closer Corey Knebel in 2018 and won't have much fantasy value. He may have to serve a suspension this year, too.

Dustin Pedroia Jan 18 3:40pm ET

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (knee) has been cleared to begin running. Pedroia mentioned on a podcast last week that his goal is to be ready for Opening Day. With him being cleared to run a full month ahead of the start of spring training, it may just give him a shot. Boston will likely take things very carefully with the 34-year-old second baseman, however, and we will need to hear the words "baseball activities" before getting too optimistic. Still, this is good news for Pedroia and Red Sox fans.

Jacob May Jan 18 3:23pm ET

Chicago White Sox OF Jacob May was outrighted to Class AAA Charlotte Thursday, Jan. 18, after he cleared waivers.

Lance Lynn Jan 18 1:20pm ET

Free-agent starting pitcher Lance Lynn has "a healthy market," according to MLB.com's Jon Morosi, that includes at least four teams -- the Twins, Angels, Orioles and Brewers. However, teams may wait on Lynn until free-agents Jake Arrieta and Yu Darvish choose their destinations. Aside from 2016, Lynn has thrown at least 175 innings in each of the last five years and he has gone a combined 72-47 with a career ERA of 3.38. The right-hander's stats look good from afar last year in his return from Tommy John surgery (3.42 ERA, 1.22 WHIP), but he struck out 153 batters in only 186 innings and finished with a 9.20 ERA and 14:10 K:BB ratio in his last four outings. There are reasons to doubt Lynn in 2018, but his fantasy value will mainly be determined by where he lands in free agency.

Felipe Rivero Jan 18 12:13pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates LHP Felipe Rivero officially signed his four-year contract extension Thursday, Jan. 18, with club options for 2022 and 2023. The previously reported amount for the deal was about $22 million.

Kevin McGowan Jan 18 10:23am ET

New York Mets RHP Kevin McGowan and RHP Chasen Bradford were designated for assignment Thursday, Jan. 18.

Chasen Bradford Jan 18 10:23am ET

New York Mets RHP Kevin McGowan and RHP Chasen Bradford were designated for assignment Thursday, Jan. 18.

Ernesto Frieri Jan 18 9:53am ET

Free-agent RHP Ernesto Frieri (Mariners) signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners Thursday, Jan. 18.

Jake Arrieta Jan 18 8:50am ET

Free agent starting pitcher Jake Arrieta has not had much traction in his free agency, but Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia writes that the Phillies could be interested in Arrieta. Salisbury notes that Arrieta has been working out with Philadelphia outfielder Nick Williams in Austin, and that Williams has been selling him on the Phillies. He also writes that GM Matt Klentak is "actively" looking at ways to improve the Philadelphia rotation. Reports are that Arrieta is still looking for a five-year deal, and the Phillies reportedly are not willing to go that long with a starter on the market. If that yearly ask goes down, Philadelphia could very much be in play for the 31-year-old right-hander.

Christian Yelich Jan 18 8:50am ET

Miami Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich has been subject to trade rumored and Peter Gammons of MLB Network reports that the Marlins would need Ronald Acuna in a trade for Yelich. Gammons goes so far as to say that the Marlins will not even discuss a second player without Acuna being included in a trade. That is probably fair, because the Braves likely would not want discussions to go on if they have to include him. As good as Yelich has been, it is tough to imagine that Atlanta would be willing to include the player that many consider the best prospect in baseball in a trade for him. Assuming Gammons is correct, you probably will not see Yelich in a Braves uniform in 2018.

Michael Conforto Jan 18 2:53am ET

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto (shoulder) is not expected to return from shoulder surgery until May, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Conforto dislocated his shoulder while swinging a bat last August and underwent the procedure in September.

Randal Grichuk Jan 17 11:40pm ET

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk is reportedly "not thrilled" with the idea of being a fourth outfielder in 2018. With the Cardinals acquiring Marcell Ozuna from the Marlins and already employing Dexter Fowler and Tommy Pham, there simply isn't room for Grichuk to have a starting role next season. The source points out that Grichuk didn't "gripe" about a bench role, but certainly did specify that he would prefer an everyday starting role. Grichuk is a useful piece, but doesn't deserve to start over any of the Cardinals starters. He'll obviously only have fantasy value if he ends up in a starting role.

Jose Iglesias Jan 17 10:50pm ET

Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias avoided salary arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year deal. Financial terms weren't disclosed. Iglesias is a glove-first player that doesn't carry much value in fantasy leagues, especially now that he'll be hitting at the bottom of a rebuilding team's lineup. In 2017 he hit .255/.288/.369 with only six home runs, 54 RBI and seven steals in 463 at-bats. Iglesias is only worth considering in deep AL-only setups.

    J.D. Martinez Jan 17 10:50pm ET

The Boston Red Sox's reported offer of five years and $100 million to free-agent outfielder J.D. Martinez is "not accurate," according to his agent, Scott Boras. Martinez and Boras were said to be looking for a deal close to $200 million at the beginning of free agency, and while the free-agent market has been especially slow to develop, Martinez should definitely be able to do way better than five years and $100 million from Boston. Martinez is reportedly willing to wait until after spring training starts to sign a contract. He's by far the best outfielder available on the open market and will be an early-round fantasy target no matter where he lands.

Jose Iglesias Jan 17 7:13pm ET

Detroit Tigers SS Jose Iglesias avoided arbitration Wednesday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Tigers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Josh Harrison Jan 17 6:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Josh Harrison basically put himself on the trade market Tuesday, but Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets "aren't enthusiastic" about moving outfielder Brandon Nimmo in a deal for Harrison. It was also reported earlier Wednesday that the Mets would not move Nimmo in a deal for outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who was traded to the Giants on Monday. The 30-year-old Harrison hit 16 homers for the Pirates with 12 stolen bases while registering a .771 OPS and playing four positions for Pittsburgh. He recently mentioned that he would prefer to play on a different club if the Pirates are not going to contend in the next two years. New York lists Nimmo at the top of their center field depth chart right now and with outfielder Michael Conforto out until May with a shoulder injury, it makes sense that they want to keep the 24-year-old outfielder without getting someone who can play center back.

Carson Fulmer Jan 17 5:10pm ET

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Carson Fulmer is expected to be given a chance to win a rotation spot in spring training, according to Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago. Fulmer has tantalized with his stuff since being drafted with the eighth pick in 2015, but also frustrated with his inability to throw strikes at both the MLB and minor league levels. The 24-year-old right-hander deserves another shot at the rotation, especially considering the White Sox will be nowhere near contention in 2018, but if he struggles with command again, a permanent move to the bullpen might not be far away.
