Jose Martinez Aug 21 5:10pm ET

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jose Martinez (shoulder) is throwing on Wednesday, which is an improvement over Tuesday when he did outfield work. Martinez is nearing a rehab assignment and could be a candidate to return to the active roster by the end of the month, barring any setbacks. The 31-year-old is hitting .266/.336/.401 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in a step back from his 2018 season. At best, Martinez will hope for a part-time role in St. Louis' crowded outfield when he's up to speed. The Cardinals will have to get creative with playing time between Marcell Ozuna, Dexter Fowler, Harrison Bader, Lane Thomas, Tyler O'Neill and Martinez down the stretch as they attempt to win the division.

Lucas Giolito Aug 21 5:10pm ET

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito threw a complete-game shutout versus the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Giolito struck out 12 and only allowed three hits and no walks for his 14th win of the season. The 25-year-old has been dealing in August with a 2.33 ERA and 44 strikeouts this month. Giolito's next start will likely be against the Twins again on Tuesday, this time at home.

Jeff McNeil Aug 21 5:00pm ET

New York Mets infielder Jeff McNeil (hamstring) will take batting practice on Wednesday as he works his way back from a hamstring strain that has kept him out since Aug. 13. The 27-year-old has done nothing but hit since debuting last year and has a useful .332/.400/.529 line with 15 homers, 67 runs, 55 RBI and four steals this year in his 397 at-bats. McNeil could return to the team at the end of this month or early in September and deserves to be stashed in all formats.

Austin Riley Aug 21 5:00pm ET

Atlanta Braves outfielder Austin Riley (knee) will start his rehab assignment with Single-A Rome on Friday. If everything goes right, Riley could return to the team at the end of August or early September. The 22-year-old rookie has hit .242/.294/.504 with 17 home runs, 38 runs and 45 RBI in his first 236 major league at-bats. Riley started off extremely hot but cooled down before his injury. He'll still be an everyday player when he returns and is worth stashing in all fantasy formats until then.

Emilio Pagan Aug 21 4:50pm ET

Tampa Bay Rays closerEmilio Pagan blew his seventh save of the season against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, although he managed to get the win after the Rays walked it off in the ninth. Pagan entered the game in the top of the ninth with the Rays ahead 5-3 before letting up a solo home run and a two-RBI triple to tie the game. It was the first time all season Pagan let up more than two earned runs in an appearance, and the outing brings his ERA up to 2.35. His track record in save situations has been up-and-down all season, although he had converted on his last seven before Wednesday. However, he will still be seeing the bulk of these situations going forward.

Robinson Cano Aug 21 4:30pm ET

New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano (hamstring) is taking batting practice on Wednesday and is hoping to return to the team in September. It's been a disappointing and injury-filled season for Cano in his first year in New York. The veteran is batting a mediocre .252/.295/.415 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in his 86 games played. Even if Cano returns next month, those in mixed leagues shouldn't be holding out any hope that he'll make a difference to close out the season.

Willson Contreras Aug 21 4:30pm ET

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras (hamstring) is working out in the outfield before the game on Wednesday. Contreras has been out since Aug. 3 but has been one of the more valuable fantasy catchers this year, hitting .275/.365/.525 with 19 long balls, 45 runs and 57 RBI in 87 games. He's a must-stash and can hopefully rejoin the Cubbies before the calendar flips to September. Victor Caratini and Jonathan Lucroy will continue holding down the fort until Contreras returns.

    From RotoBaller

Oscar Mercado Aug 21 4:30pm ET

Cleveland Indians outfielder Oscar Mercado is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Greg Allen is starting in center field and is batting second against Mets starter Marcus Stroman. Allen, 26, has very little power (four home runs) and is hitting .239/.298/.393 with 23 RBI and three steals in 163 at-bats this year. While he's in a nice lineup spot on Wednesday, there just isn't much upside in his game to make him an attractive DFS sleeper.

Chris Archer Aug 21 4:23pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Chris Archer (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Aug. 21, because of right shoulder inflammation, while RP Clay Holmes (quadriceps) was placed on the 10-day injured list because of left quadriceps discomfort. The team also recalled RHP Dario Agrazal and RP Parker Markel from Class AAA Indianapolis.

Clay Holmes Aug 21 4:23pm ET

Clay Holmes Aug 21 4:20pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Clay Holmes has been placed on the 10-day injured list with discomfort in his left quadriceps. Holmes has only appeared in two games since coming off the IL earlier this month with a triceps injury, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up one earned run on two hits and seven walks. His 6.05 ERA this season and 6.84 ERA last season should show that he is not a pitcher you should be turning to in fantasy.

Chris Archer Aug 21 4:10pm ET

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed starting pitcher Chris Archer (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation. Pitcher Dario Agrazal was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Archer was pulled from his start on Tuesday and has endured a rough first year in Pittsburgh, going 3-9 with a 5.19 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 143 strikeouts in 119 2/3 innings (23 starts). He might only wind up missing a start or two, but at this point we wouldn't blame you if you dumped the right-hander in shallow leagues. Agrazal has a 4.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 19 K's in 42 innings (eight starts) for the Bucs this year. He'll be a deep league streaming option without much upside in the right matchups if he fills in for Archer.

Colin Moran Aug 21 4:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Colin Moran is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Washington Nationals. The 26-year-old went 2-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's game but is getting a day off against lefty Patrick Corbin. Jose Osuna will take over his spot at third after playing Tuesday's game in left field. Osuna is one of the Pirates best hitters against left-handed pitchers, batting .304 in 46 at-bats against them. Consider him a decent, cheap DFS sleeper play.

    From RotoBaller

Eddie Rosario Aug 21 4:03pm ET

Minnesota Twins OF Eddie Rosario (hamstring) left the game early Wednesday, Aug. 21, because of right hamstring tightness. He is considered day-to-day.

Niko Goodrum Aug 21 4:00pm ET

Detroit Tigers infielder Niko Goodrum (groin) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday, but outfielder Travis Demeritte (groin) is back in there, playing right field and hitting second against Astros starter Justin Verlander. Gordon Beckham is at the keystone and is hitting ninth. We'd suggest avoiding Beckham at all costs, while Demeritte is also a tough sell against Houston's ace. Demeritte has 19 hits in his first 65 MLB at-bats (.292) with two homers and five RBI in 18 games.

Brian McCann Aug 21 3:53pm ET

Atlanta Braves C Brian McCann (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Aug. 21, because of a left knee sprain. The team also recalled C Alex Jackson from Class AAA Gwinnett.

    Tyler O'Neill Aug 21 3:50pm ET

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill (wrist) is starting his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday night. O'Neill has been out since Aug. 3, but he could return as soon as this weekend from the injured list. He's hitting .279/.316/.434 with five home runs, 14 runs and 16 RBI in 46 games at the major league level. Even in a crowded outfield in St. Louis, O'Neill should at least have a platoon role down the stretch, making him worth consideration in deep mixed and NL-only leagues when he's back.
