Albert Pujols Aug 22 2:20am ET

Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols went 2-for-5 and drove in two more runs Wednesday against the Rangers. Pujols now has multiple hits in five of his last six games and is slashing .379/.438/.552 over his last seven starts with nine runs batted in. If Pujols can finish the month strong, he could give himself an outside shot at 100 runs batted in this season. Pujols provides home runs and RBI, with little else, in fantasy moving forward.

Brett Anderson Aug 22 2:13am ET

Oakland Athletics LHP Brett Anderson (finger) is scheduled to take his regular turn in the rotation on Sunday, Aug. 25; he was removed from his last start due to a blister.

Brett Gardner Aug 22 2:13am ET

New York Yankees OF Brett Gardner (toe) missed his second consecutive game Wednesday, Aug. 21, after having an ingrown toenail removed over the weekend. Gardner could return as soon as Thursday, Aug. 22, according to manager Aaron Boone.

Gerrit Cole Aug 22 2:13am ET

Houston Astros RHP Gerrit Cole (hamstring) is set to start against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, Aug. 21; it's his first appearance since being scratched from his last scheduled start due to hamstring discomfort.

Robinson Chirinos Aug 22 2:10am ET

Houston Astros catcher Robinson Chirinos went 4-for-4 with the teams lone RBI in the Astros 2-1 loss to the lowly Tigers. Chirinos now has hits in each of his last four starts and seven out of his last nine, going 10-for-29 (.344) during that span. The veteran backstop enjoyed a fruitful month of June, slugging .539 and driving in 17 runs. Chirinos has been below-average since, losing most of his fantasy value. He could get hot one more time but will be a short-term option, at best, heading towards the fantasy playoffs.

Justin Verlander Aug 22 2:10am ET

Houston Astros starter Justin Verlander pitched a complete game against his former team but suffered a rare 2-1 loss on Wednesday. Verlander (15-5) struck out 11 hitters but allowed two solo home runs as a potent Astros offense was held in check. For Verlander, this is his first loss since July 5 despite lowering his ERA to 2.77 on the season. The veteran is still having an elite season, even in defeat, and will look to get back on track early next week.

Washington Nationals RHP Joe Ross (leg) is set to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Aug. 22, which should help determine whether he'll make his next scheduled start on Saturday, Aug. 24, against the Chicago Cubs. If Ross can't go, RHP Erick Fedde will take the ball.

Danny Duffy Aug 22 1:23am ET

Colorado Rockies RHP Jon Gray (ankle) is leaning toward surgery on his left foot. He said Wednesday, Aug. 21, that the pain returned from his left foot injury. Imaging revealed a stress fracture. He has never had surgery on the foot before, but he's leaning toward surgery this time. He said even if he has surgery it shouldn't affect his offseason or the start of the 2020 season.

Yoan Moncada Aug 21 11:33pm ET

The Chicago White Sox will activate INF Yoan Moncada (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list on Thursday, Aug. 22. The team optioned OF Ryan Cordell to Triple-A Charlotte after the game Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Casey Mize Aug 21 11:33pm ET

The Detroit Tigers have shut down RHP Casey Mize for the remainder of the 2019 season. He is the No. 1 prospect for the organization, and this is not due to an injury. He'll stay with Double-A Erie until the end of the season before heading to instructional league on Sept. 13.

Brad Hand Aug 21 11:30pm ET

Cleveland Indians closer Brad Hand struggled on Wednesday against the Mets, taking a loss and a blown save. He got just two outs, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. He threw 18 pitches, faced six batters, and watched the Mets walk off. It was Hand's fifth blown save and his record dropped to 6-4. He hasn't been the same pitcher in the second half after his almost unhittable first half. He's not in danger of losing his job, but Cleveland fans and Hand's fantasy owners could sure use a string of scoreless outings from him.
