Luke Gregerson May 22 1:30pm ET

Former St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson cleared waivers and has been unconditionally released, making him a free agent. It is difficult to see the 35-year-old Gregerson catch a significant role with someone else given his struggles (7.94 ERA in just 5 2/3 innings this year) and the fact that no team put a claim in on him. He had good success from 2009-16, including 31 saves in 2015, but now appears to be nearing the end given his climbing ERA and peripherals since 2017. Any fantasy relevance has been lacking for some time.

Willie Calhoun May 22 1:20pm ET

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left quad strain. The Rangers recalled outfielder Delino DeShields to take Calhoun's place on the roster. DeShields has hit just .211/.318/.421 at Triple-A Nashville since his demotion, which was brought on by a .182/.321/.284 MLB line. Only fantasy owners with a desperate need for steals should consider adding DeShields. Calhoun's hot start since his call-up makes him worthy of a stash on the IL; hopefully his stay there will be short.

Merrill Kelly May 22 1:10pm ET

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly will look to post another quality start on Wednesday when he takes on the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Kelly has struggled a bit against the Padres this year, posting a 5.73 ERA in two starts. However, Kelly did beat the Padres on April 1 with a quality start and he will face the right-handed heavy team in a pitcher's park this afternoon. Count Kelly as a potential streamer on Wednesday.

    From RotoBaller

Edinson Volquez May 22 1:10pm ET

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Edinson Volquez (elbow) is playing catch on Wednesday for the first time since April. Manager Chris Woodward said that Volquez could be a nice addition to the bullpen later this year. The 35-year-old right-hander doesn't have much left in the tank in his career. He had a 7.04 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and six K's in 7 2/3 innings in his two starts for Texas before getting hurt. Even if he somehow is making starts for the Rangers again in 2019, you should probably avoid him at all costs.

    From RotoBaller

Manuel Margot May 22 1:10pm ET

San Diego Padres infielder Greg Garcia and outfielder Manuel Margot are taking over for second baseman Ian Kinsler and outfielder Hunter Renfroe, respectively, on Wednesday. Garcia is at the keystone and is hitting leadoff, while Margot is batting seventh and playing center field against Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly. Garcia is beginning to see more time at second base with Kinsler struggling, but the 29-year-old hasn't done much himself either, hitting .239 with a homer and six RBI. Garcia will be the more attractive deep DFS sleeper simply because he's setting the table on Wednesday.

    From RotoBaller

Ildemaro Vargas May 22 1:00pm ET

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta (shoulder) is out of the lineup on Wednesday after leaving the game early on Tuesday with a shoulder injury. Blake Swihart is starting in left field and batting eighth, while Ildemaro Vargas is at second base and hitting leadoff against Padres left-handed starter Eric Lauer. Hopefully Peralta will be ready to return on Friday after Thursday's off day. Vargas and Swihart are both low-ceiling DFS plays, but Vargas has more appeal as a deep sleeper on Wednesday out of the leadoff spot. Ketel Marte has moved to center field and is batting second.

    From RotoBaller

Max Scherzer May 22 1:00pm ET

Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer will take the bump on Wednesday looking to help his team avoid a third straight loss to the New York Mets. Scherzer is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against the Mets this season. Although the righty hasn't put up Cy Young caliber numbers thus far in 2019, his advanced stats show that he is due for some positive regression. The Mets struggling offense could be just what Scherzer needs in order to begin a hot streak. Start Scherzer with confidence on Wednesday.

Khris Davis May 22 12:53pm ET

Oakland Athletics OF Khris Davis (hip, oblique) will be re-evaluated Thursday, May 23, to determine if two days off will help him, and he'll have an MRI before the injured list becomes a possibility.

Carlos Gonzalez May 22 12:53pm ET

Cleveland Indians OF Carlos Gonzalez was designated for assignment Wednesday, May 22. C Eric Haase was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.

Eric Haase May 22 12:53pm ET

Cleveland Indians OF Carlos Gonzalez was designated for assignment Wednesday, May 22. C Eric Haase was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.

Yusei Kikuchi May 22 12:50pm ET

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi will make a normal start in his next outing Saturday in Oakland over the weekend, according to manager Scott Servais. Kikuchi's next abbreviated one-inning outing will likely come sometime in his next 3-4 outings, as the Mariners are following a pitching plan to limit Kikuchi's initial workload as he transitions to the MLB. The 27-year-old rookie has logged 60 1/3 innings with three wins, 49 strikeouts and a 3.43 ERA. Kikuchi should be owned in standard mixed leagues.

    From RotoBaller

Jacob deGrom May 22 12:50pm ET

New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom will look to rebound after a poor start in his last outing. DeGrom will face the Washington Nationals at Citi Field tonight in a marquee matchup against ace Max Scherzer. Run support issues aside, deGrom has performed well against the Nationals in the last few years. The righty pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in a start earlier this season on March 28. Expect a solid outing tonight from the Mets ace.

Ryan Braun May 22 12:20pm ET

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun (knee) is getting a rest day on Wednesday because his knee has been acting up for the last four to five days, according to manager Craig Counsell. This shouldn't surprise anyone, as Braun often battles nagging ailments throughout the season. He's been very good when on the field in 2019, hitting .275/.339/.484 with nine long balls, 23 runs, 30 RBI and four stolen bases in 153 at-bats. Get him back into your lineups when he returns. Hopefully that'll be on Friday with an off day on Thursday.

    From RotoBaller

Khris Davis May 22 12:20pm ET

The Oakland Athletics will try to get through Friday without outfielder Khris Davis (hip, oblique) before making a decision on whether to place him on the injured list. The want to see if two days off help him and also want to see his MRI results. We'd be surprised if Davis avoids the injured list altogether after battling a hip contusion off and on since May 5. The 31-year-old slugger is hitting .248 (39-for-157) with 12 homers, 23 runs and 29 RBI on the year. Mark Canha will see more at-bats in the designated hitter spot for however long Davis is out.

    From RotoBaller

Tim Beckham May 22 12:10pm ET

Seattle Mariners shortstop Tim Beckham is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Dylan Moore, fresh off the injured list, is starting at third base and is hitting seventh against Rangers starting pitcher Jesse Chavez. Even though he'll face some nice pitching matchups in this one, Moore just doesn't excite fantasy owners in any format. He's hitting .229/.339/.417 in 48 at-bats with two homers, five RBI and two stolen bases on the season. You can do better.

    From RotoBaller

Billy Hamilton May 22 12:10pm ET

Kansas City Royals outfielder Billy Hamilton is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Hamilton now has a line of .226/.302/.290 with no homers, five RBI and nine stolen bases. If infield prospect Nicky Lopez continues to hold his own at second base, Whit Merrifield will likely continue to play center field and leave Hamilton to ride the pine. If Hamilton continues to struggle to get on base, he can't utilize his speed for fantasy owners. Merrifield is always a strong DFS choice when he's playing, especially in the leadoff spot like he is on Wednesday against Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

    From RotoBaller

Ryan Braun May 22 12:10pm ET

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is taking the day off on Wednesday. Ben Gamel will start in left field and bat sixth against Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo. Gamel has been very solid for the Brew Crew in his 110 at-bats so far this year, slashing .273/.352/.382 with two home runs, 17 runs and 11 RBI. He doesn't have a whole lot of DFS upside, however, and he's facing a very tall task in the right-handed Castillo.

    From RotoBaller

Stephen Piscotty May 22 12:00pm ET

Oakland Athletics outfielder Stephen Piscotty is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday. Chad Pinder is starting in right field in his place and will hit seventh against Indians starting pitcher Jefry Rodriguez. Pinder will be a sneaky DFS choice on Wednesday. He's hitting a solid .270/.311/.459 with five home runs, 19 runs scored and 16 RBI on the season. He makes for a nice low-priced, under-the-radar option.

    From RotoBaller

Trevor Story May 22 12:00pm ET

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story is known for hammering balls deep into the stands, but his home run on Tuesday will go down as one of the lucky ones. Story drove one in the third inning that was deep enough to clear the wall in left, but just barely. Pirates left fielder Bryan Reynolds tracked the ball the whole way, but he had initially turned his body the wrong way. Reynolds made a last second switch to the other direction, leaped, and the ball solidly struck the top part of his glove. Fortunately for Story and Colorado, the awkward angle caused it to bounce out of the top of Reynolds' glove and into the stands. Story's slowed down a bit since his hot start, but he's still on pace for another 30/20 season that will further cement his position as one of the most valuable players in the game.

    From RotoBaller

Bradley Zimmer May 22 11:50am ET

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said that outfielder Bradley Zimmer (shoulder) will stay in Arizona at extended spring training for five or six more days before starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus. The 26-year-old has been out all year after having offseason shoulder surgery, but he should be an outfield regular in Cleveland when he's ready to return. His combination of power and speed -- he stole 18 bases in 101 games his rookie season in 2017 -- will make him attractive in deep mixed leagues whenever he makes his season debut.
