Zack Cozart May 23 3:30pm ET

Los Angeles Angels infielder Zack Cozart will start and hit eighth Thursday against the Twins. It has been an abysmal start to the veteran's season, who comes into tonight's game hitting only .129 through 85 at-bats with only two extra-base hits. Cozart has posted only one multi-hit game all season and is only 2-for-31 hitting at home this season. This is not what either party envisioned when the Angels gave Cozart big money a season ago. There is still plenty of time to turn his season around but Cozart is trending towards not being on the club much longer if he continues to struggle at this rate moving forward.

Albert Pujols May 23 3:30pm ET

Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols will hit third Thursday against left-hander Martin Perez and the Twins. Pujols is posting a slugging percentage of .500 over his last 15 games and a .490 slugging against left-handed pitching this season. The slugger should also have a favorable matchup against Perez and has a lifetime .385 batting average against him through 26 at-bats. Pujols has been mostly an all-or-nothing fantasy asset this season and Thursday is one of those games where he could produce.

Corbin Martin May 23 3:20pm ET

Houston Astros pitcher Corbin Martin will make his third start of the season Thursday against the White Sox. The Astros have been juggling the back-half of their rotation which has opened the door for the hard-throwing 23-year-old. Martin struck out nine hitters through 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut on May 12 and is averaging 95.2 MPH on his four seam fastball through two starts. Martin is not fantasy viable at this time but is getting a chance to stick on an Astros team that is dominating the league right now.

Wander Suero May 23 3:20pm ET

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Wander Suero allowed an eighth inning three-run home run to Carlos Gomez Thursday that made the difference in a 6-4 loss to the New York Mets. Suero now has a 7.17 ERA in 21 1/3 innings, even though it was Suero's first blown save of the season. Reliever Matt Grace sits at an 8.02 ERA, Jose Ross at 7.82, Kyle Barraclough and Tony Sipp both 5.40. Only closer Sean Doolittle (3.43) and Justin Miller (4.02) are doing okay. Trevor Rosenthal (36.00) is currently on a rehab assignment. Other than Doolittle, clearly none of these pitchers is fantasy viable. More importantly for fantasy purposes, however, it's also bad news for starting pitchers Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg (2 ER in 7 IP Thursday), and Patrick Corbin, who only have a combined 10 wins in 32 starts. They are all top pitchers, of course, but their fantasy value has taken a hit from the bullpen's inability to preserve several of their leads.

Stephen Strasburg May 23 3:20pm ET

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg allowed three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts in seven innings Thursday against the New York Mets. Strasburg left the game in line to get the win but was done in by the Nationals atrocious bullpen after a three-run Carlos Gomez home run in the eighth inning cost Washington the lead and the game. Strasburg now owns a 4-3 record in 10 starts with a 3.32 ERA and a dazzling 0.98 WHIP. The Nationals pitcher has struck out 82 hitters in 65 innings. Strasburg has been one of the most effective starters in baseball this season and should continue to be in lineups every time he toes the rubber.

Charlie Blackmon May 23 3:03pm ET

Colorado Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon (undisclosed) was taken out of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, May 23, due to an apparent injury, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post.

Yoan Moncada May 23 2:50pm ET

Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada is leading off Thursday as the White Sox are using the same nine players from Wednesday in a different batting order. Among the other shakeups, Tim Anderson bats second and Leury Garcia fifth. Chicago is facing the Houston Astros and Corbin Martin, making the third start of his career. After a successful debut against the Texas Rangers, Martin struggled with his control against the Red Sox in his followup. As a result, Moncada and Anderson make for decent DFS options atop Thursday's lineup. The rest of the Chicago order is less worthwhile.

    From RotoBaller

Shohei Ohtani May 23 2:50pm ET

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (finger) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday. Ohtani left the game earlier this week after being hit by a pitch, but he played on Tuesday. The Angels are likely just giving Ohtani a little breather before the weekend. Mike Trout is serving as the designated hitter and is batting second, while David Fletcher is in left field and is hitting leadoff against Twins starting pitcher Martin Perez. Both Trout and Fletcher would be more than acceptable DFS selections on Thursday.

Drew Anderson May 23 2:43pm ET

Philadelphia Phillies RP Drew Anderson was recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley on Thursday, May 23. The team also optioned RP Cole Irvin to Lehigh Valley.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Drew Anderson was recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley on Thursday, May 23. The team also optioned RP Cole Irvin to Lehigh Valley.

Brandon Crawford May 23 2:40pm ET

San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is not in the starting lineup on Thursday. Donovan Solano is starting at the 6 and is hitting eighth against Braves starting pitcher Kevin Gausman. Solano has two hits in his 13 at-bats on the season with one RBI and is a poor DFS selection while hitting at the bottom of the light-hitting Giants lineup on Thursday. Look elsewhere.

    From RotoBaller

Jimmy Cordero May 23 2:33pm ET

Seattle Mariners RP Zac Rosscup was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, May 23. The Mariners also designated RP Jimmy Cordero for assignment.

Tim Peterson May 23 2:33pm ET

San Francisco Giants OF Aaron Altherr was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets on Thursday, May 23. The Mets also designated RP Tim Peterson for assignment.

Jordan Luplow May 23 2:30pm ET

Cleveland Indians outfielder Jordan Luplow is batting fourth and playing right field against the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday. Luplow has hit in that spot a few times before this season. He has a .242/.301/.500 slash line in 73 plate appearances in 2019 with five home runs, demonstrating cleanup-capable power. Luplow is probably best faded in DFS, with the Houston and Tampa Bay offenses providing better value than Cleveland's weak lineup. Luplow has only eight RBI despite the five home runs, for instance.

Ryan Yarbrough May 23 2:23pm ET

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Yandy Diaz) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hand contusion Thursday, May 23. The team also recalled RP Ryan Yarbrough from Class AAA Durham.

Yandy Diaz May 23 2:23pm ET

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Yandy Diaz) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hand contusion Thursday, May 23. The team also recalled RP Ryan Yarbrough from Class AAA Durham.

Tyler Thornburg May 23 2:23pm ET

Boston Red Sox RP Tyler Thornburg (hip) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip impingement Thursday, May 23. The team also recalled RP Travis Lankins from Class AAA Pawtucket.

Ryan Yarbrough May 23 2:20pm ET

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryne Stanek is no longer listed as the opener for Thursday's game. Instead, pitcher Ryan Yarbrough, who was called up in light of Yandy Diaz's placement on the injured list, will be the starter. Presumably he will pitch the bulk of the innings, as has been his Major League role whether starting or following, but that has not been announced. Now that Yarbrough is starting, he is somewhat less likely to get credited with a win. However, with Thursday's DFS slate a mere two games and facing a weak Cleveland Indians offense, Yarbrough is a decent play nonetheless. He has a 44-to-7 K-BB ratio in 37 2/3 innings across MLB and Triple-A this season.

    From RotoBaller

Aaron Altherr May 23 2:20pm ET

The New York Mets claimed outfielder Aaron Altherr off waivers from the Giants on Thursday. Altherr has just one hit in 30 at-bats with the Phillies and Giants this year. He had just one at-bat for the Giants. The Mets really could use the outfield help with both Michael Conforto (concussion) and Brandon Nimmo (neck) on the injured list. New York is mixing and matching with Rajai Davis, J.D. Davis, Carlos Gomez and Juan Lagares right now, but Altherr could get some playing time in the short term. He's still not attractive to fantasy owners, even in the deepest of leagues.

    From RotoBaller

Yandy Diaz May 23 2:00pm ET

The Tampa Bay Rays placed infielder Yandy Diaz on the injured list Thursday. Pitcher Ryan Yarbrough was called up and is now starting the game, despite previous reports and Stanek appearing to be listed as the starter. Yarbrough, whose 2019 MLB peripherals are better than his 8.10 ERA and who has been very successful in the minors this season, is worth a DFS shot in the small slate Thursday against the Cleveland Indians. Diaz, meanwhile, was hitting .256/.339/.500 with nine home runs in 41 games. He should be held on to, even in leagues without IL spots, assuming you're not burdened with several injured players already.
