Matt Chapman Jul 17 5:23pm ET

Oakland Athletics 3B Matt Chapman (ankle) left the game early Wednesday, July 17, because of left ankle soreness.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Jul 17 5:20pm ET

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon struggled on Wednesday, lasting just 3 2/3 innings while allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three and allowed a home run. Poncedeleon ended up with a no decision, but his ERA went up to 2.80. This was his fifth start of the season, but his first since officially taking Michael Wacha's spot in the rotation. Poncedeleon has been good and should have mixed league value going forward, but this wasn't his best effort.

Pete Alonso Jul 17 5:20pm ET

After the New York Mets went ahead in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon in Minnesota, they ran wild in the eighth. The club scored six runs, with the highlight of the frame being the mammoth, two-run home run off the bat of first baseman Peter Alonso. The rookie hit his 31st home run of the year and his first since the All-Star break. It measured at 474 feet, the longest Mets home run in the Statcast era. For Alonso, this could be the game that awakens his bat, as he's struggled since the All-Star break, having recorded just one hit in 13 plate appearances heading into Wednesday's game.

Dominic Smith Jul 17 5:10pm ET

The final score of Wednesday afternoon's matchup between the New York Mets and Minnesota Twins doesn't tell the whole story. The Mets, who wound up winning by 10 wins, took the lead late in the game before demolishing Minnesota's pitchers. Utility man Dominic Smith had the biggest hit of the game as he smashed a three-run blast in the seventh, putting his team up by two. It was one of two hits on the day for Smith, who drove in four runs in total. The victory capped off a two-game sweep of the Twins, with New York getting set for a series against the San Francisco Giants next.
