Francisco Liriano Mar 23 12:40pm ET

Pittsburgh Pirates veteran pitcher Francisco Liriano and outfielder Melky Cabrera have been assured by the team that they have made the opening day roster. Liriano played last season with the Detroit Tigers, finishing with a 4.58 ERA and 18.8 K%. Cabrera played 78 games with the Cleveland Indians last year, slashing .280/.335./.420 with six home runs and 39 RBI. Neither veteran is likely to be a fantasy relevant option this season. The Pirates have not announced who will be dropped from the 40-man roster to create room.

Kyle Gibson Mar 23 11:43am ET

Minnesota Twins RHP Kyle Gibson (illness) hopes to add five more pounds in order to reach his ideal playing weight of 215 pounds as he continues to recover from a January bout with E. coli. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings versus the Boston Red Sox Friday, March 22, but was generally pleased with the quality of his pitches.

Shohei Ohtani Mar 23 11:43am ET

Los Angeles Angels RHP/OF Shohei Ohtani (elbow) did some hitting and throwing Friday, March 22. He took 10 swings off a tee, 10 swings during soft toss and 10 swings during batting practice in the cages. Ohtani also threw 55 times on flat ground, including 35 throws from a distance of 50 feet. The next step in his rehab would be to take on-field batting practice.

Taylor Cole Mar 23 11:33am ET

Los Angeles Angels RHP Taylor Cole (shoulder) will open the regular season on the injured list due to a sore right shoulder. However, he considers the injury to be minor and hopes to return soon. Cole first experienced discomfort following his most recent outing March 7.

Keynan Middleton Mar 23 11:33am ET

Los Angeles Angels RHP Keynan Middleton (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw his first bullpen session Friday, March 22. He hopes to return to action in June.

Matt Duffy Mar 23 11:30am ET

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Matt Duffy (hamstring) was scratched from the lineup Saturday and could open the season on the injured list. Although Duffy can be left off of fantasy rosters, there are a few promising candidates for at-bats behind him. Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe have both impressed this spring training and could represent potential upgrades over Duffy. Daniel Robertson would also likely be in the mix for at-bats. It's a situation to monitor in case one of them runs away with an everyday job. For now, expect this infield to be a rotation that can be avoided by fantasy managers, with the exception of Willy Adames at shortstop.

    From RotoBaller

Matt Magill Mar 23 11:23am ET

Minnesota Twins RHP Matt Magill (arm) could begin the season on the injured list due to an unspecified arm issue, according to manager Rocco Baldelli. He hasn't pitched since March 13, and has not yet resumed throwing.

Addison Reed Mar 23 11:13am ET

Minnesota Twins RHP Addison Reed (thumb) could begin the season on the injured list due to a left thumb injury, according to manager Rocco Baldelli. He hasn't pitched since March 14, but the club will wait until the end of spring training camp before making a final decision.

Gabriel Moya Mar 23 11:13am ET

Minnesota Twins LHP Gabriel Moya (shoulder) could begin the season on the injured list due to tightness in his shoulder.

Steve Cishek Mar 23 11:13am ET

Chicago Cubs RHP Steve Cishek (illness) will pitch versus the Colorado Rockies Saturday, March 23. He has been sidelined due to illness since Sunday, March 17.

Adam Rosales Mar 23 11:03am ET

The Minnesota Twins released INF Adam Rosales and RHP Tim Collins Friday, March 22.

Daniel Descalso Mar 23 11:03am ET

Chicago Cubs INF Daniel Descalso (shoulder) is scheduled to receive at-bats in a minor league game this weekend and hopes to be ready for game action by early next week. He is expected to be available for Opening Day barring any setbacks.

Tony Barnette Mar 23 11:03am ET

Chicago Cubs RHP Tony Barnette (shoulder) threw exclusively fastballs during a 25-pitch bullpen session Thursday, March 21. He will begin the regular season on the injured list.

Alec Mills Mar 23 10:43am ET

Chicago Cubs RHP Alec Mills (back) is expected to pitch Saturday, March 23, against the Colorado Rockies. He hasn't appeared in a game since March 4.

Matt Olson Mar 23 10:43am ET

Updating a previous report, Oakland Athletics 1B Matt Olson's (hand) surgical procedure involved a right hamate excision and could sideline him for an extended period of time, although a club spokesman declined to reveal a timetable for his recovery. Olson was injured Thursday, March 21, after fouling off a pitch from Seattle Mariners LHP Yusei Kikuchi during the fifth inning but he didn't leave the game until the sixth inning.

    A.J. Minter Mar 23 10:23am ET

Atlanta Braves LHP A.J. Minter (shoulder) threw live batting practice Friday, March 22, and was pleased with his changeup but said he still needed to work on his location. He will probably be required to throw one more batting practice session before being cleared to appear in minor league games. Minter will need to go through a typical spring training routine in terms of appearances before coming off the injured list, meaning that he is likely to be sidelined at least through Atlanta's first homestand.

Raffy Lopez Mar 23 10:03am ET

The Atlanta Braves optioned C Rafael Lopez to Class AAA Gwinnett Friday, March 22.

Jed Lowrie Mar 23 9:53am ET

New York Mets 2B Jed Lowrie (knee) ran on an AlterG treadmill earlier this week, which reduces the pull of gravity and strain on joints. However, he is not close to running at full speed or resuming baseball activities and there is no timetable for his return.

Jed Lowrie Mar 23 9:53am ET

New York Mets INF Jeff McNeil is expected to be the club's starting third baseman to start the regular season, due to injuries to Jed Lowrie (knee) and Todd Frazier (oblique). McNeil is likely to bat second against right-handed pitchers.

Todd Frazier Mar 23 9:53am ET

New York Mets INF Jeff McNeil is expected to be the club's starting third baseman to start the regular season, due to injuries to Jed Lowrie (knee) and Todd Frazier (oblique). McNeil is likely to bat second against right-handed pitchers.
