Scott Oberg May 22 5:40pm ET

Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black said that relief pitcher Scott Oberg will operate as the primary closer in the absence of closer Wade Davis (oblique). Black said that Davis suffered the injury last Tuesday in Boston. Oberg, 29, is 1-0 this year with a 1.77 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 13 K's in 20 1/3 innings over 18 outings. He's been a bit fortunate with 11 walks and just the 5.8 K/9, and he only has two saves to his name in his career in five seasons. But if you're desperate for saves at this juncture, you must consider picking Oberg up in the short term.

Giancarlo Stanton May 22 5:40pm ET

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (calf) is dealing with a calf strain and will be shut down for seven to 10 days. Stanton was pulled off his rehab assignment with High-A Tampa and put back on the 10-day injured list, so this is extremely frustrating for the Yankees and Stanton's fantasy owners. There's no timetable for his return, and he might have to restart the whole rehab process. It's turning out to be a lost season for the elite slugger. Clint Frazier will continue to see starts in New York's outfield with both Stanton and Aaron Judge sidelined.

Kevan Smith May 22 5:30pm ET

The Los Angeles Angels placed catcher Kevan Smith (head) on the seven-day concussion injured list on Wednesday and called up catcher Dustin Garneau from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Garneau will serve as the backup to Jonathan Lucroy for the time being. He's hit just .194/.269/.321 with five home runs and 24 RBI in his 252 career at-bats at the major league level and can be ignored everywhere. Smith suffered the injury on a foul tip off his mask on Tuesday night.

Derek Dietrich May 22 5:30pm ET

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Derek Dietrich went 2-for-3 with two runs and a solo homer in an 11-9 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. The homer is Dietrich's 12th of the year, to go along with a .250 average, 1.011 OPS, 18 runs, 27 RBI, and one steal. Dietrich, who signed a minor league contract with the team in February, has been a pleasant surprise for the Reds this season. Scooter Gennett, who has been on the 60-day injured list with a severe groin strain, may struggle to unseat Dietrich when he returns to the field. Dietrich should be owned in all National League-only leagues and in deeper mixed leagues as well.

Ryan Mountcastle May 22 5:30pm ET

Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said that first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, the team's top prospect per MLB Pipeline, needs more time in the minor leagues. The 22-year-old has been tearing it up at Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .323/.351/.530 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 40 games, and the team will start looking at him in the outfield, too. Mountcastle should make his big league debut this year and should be stashed in dynasty/keeper leagues already. He could make an impact for the lowly Orioles and for those in mixed leagues immediately.

Luis Castillo May 22 5:30pm ET

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Luis Castillo lasted just 2 2/3 innings in an 11-9 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Castillo surprisingly struggled in the game after being mostly unhittable for the majority of the season. He gave up four runs on five hits, striking out two and walking three. He escaped with a no-decision, leaving his record at 5-1 with a 2.38 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings of work. Despite the rough outing, Castillo remains a must-start every fifth day when he takes the mound. He will look to brush off the performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his next start.

Luis Severino May 22 5:30pm ET

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino (shoulder) is likely to resume throwing soon, according to manager Aaron Boone. Severino won't return before the All-Star break, but it's good to see him making progress from a Grade 2 strain of his right lat. The 25-year-old proved last year that he can be an ace in both real life and for fantasy teams, so he needs to remain stashed in an injured list spot in all leagues as he recovers.

    From RotoBaller

Vince Velasquez May 22 5:10pm ET

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (forearm) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday. He expects to rejoin the starting rotation when he comes off the injured list. "I know theres a lot of talk, but thats my spot. I believe that 100 percent," Velasquez said. The right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings in seven outings (six starts). He's teased fantasy owners in the past but hasn't been able to show the consistency to stick in the long term in mixed leagues. He'll simply be a deep league streamer based on the matchups if he's starting again upon his return.

Xavier Cedeno May 22 5:03pm ET

Chicago Cubs RP Xavier Cedeno (wrist) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, May 22, because of left wrist inflammation. The team also recalled RP Rowan Wick from Class AAA Iowa.

Harrison Bader May 22 5:00pm ET

X-rays on St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader's (elbow) came back negative after he left the game early in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Wednesday after being hit by a pitch, according to manager Mike Shildt. It remains to be seen if Bader will be in the lineup for Game 2 Wednesday night. Don't be surprised if Jose Martinez is starting in the outfield in Game 2, as he came in to replace Bader in Game 1. Bader's injury doesn't seem serious, though, so he shouldn't miss much time moving forward. As more of a defensive specialist, he really only has appeal in NL-only leagues.

    From RotoBaller

George Springer May 22 4:50pm ET

Houston Astros outfielder George Springer (back) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday. Springer has been out of the lineup since Sunday, but he should be able to avoid the injured list and should be back in the lineup by this weekend. The 29-year-old has arguably been one of the best hitters in baseball thus far, slashing .313/.396/.654 with 17 homers, 41 runs, 42 RBI and four steals, so the Astros and fantasy owners will want him back as soon as possible. Jake Marisnick is in center field again and is hitting ninth against White Sox starting pitcher Ivan Nova on Wednesday. Marisnick has swung it well in limited chances this year, but his daily value is limited in the nine hole.

    From RotoBaller

Javier Baez May 22 4:50pm ET

Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez (heel) will return to the Cubs starting lineup on Wednesday and bat fourth. Baez left Sundays game with a heel contusion and didnt make an appearance until he pinch-hit and drove in the winning run Tuesday night. Baez will face rookie Cole Irvin Wednesday and should be started everyday that hes in the lineup.

    From RotoBaller

Jefry Rodriguez May 22 4:50pm ET

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Jefry Rodriguez only made it through four innings in Wednesday's start, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks. He struck out three and gave up a home run. The loss dropped Rodriguez to 1-4, but his 4.08 ERA is decent enough for a fill-in starter. He's fine every fifth day for Cleveland, but he shouldn't be rostered in most fantasy leagues.

    From RotoBaller

Edwin Diaz May 22 4:50pm ET

The New York Mets are apparently willing to use closer Edwin Diaz for multi-inning saves now after previously being against the notion. Fantasy owners won't complain if Diaz gets more save opportunities because of this, but you have to wonder how it might affect his health and effectiveness as the season progresses. The hard-throwing right-hander has 11 saves, a 1.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and healthy 28 strikeouts in his 18 2/3 innings of work. Despite New York's struggles, Diaz remains a high-end fantasy closing option.

    From RotoBaller

Giancarlo Stanton May 22 4:50pm ET

The New York Yankees returned outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (calf) from his rehab assignment with High-A Tampa with left calf tightness and placed him back on the 10-day injured list. Injuries continue to be a problem for the slugging 29-year-old, and he hasn't played in a major league game since March 31. It's unclear when he'll return to the Yankees lineup, but fantasy owners must be even more patient while waiting for him to come back. The longer he's out, the more time that gives Clint Frazier and Brett Gardner to make noise in New York's outfield. Stay tuned for more updates on Stanton's timetable for a return.

    From RotoBaller

Michael Wacha May 22 4:40pm ET

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha did not pitch well in the first game of a double header against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. He lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out three and allowed a home run. Wacha took the loss to drop his record to 3-2 and his ERA went up to 5.59. He's shown flashes of upside here and there, but this season has mostly been a struggle for Wacha so far. He's reaching the point of only being usable in excellent matchups.

    From RotoBaller

Michael Conforto May 22 4:30pm ET

New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto (concussion) started baseball activities on Wednesday by swinging a bat "real easy, real laid back," according to manager Mickey Callaway. However, there's still no timetable for his return and he may not come off the seven-day concussion injured list when he's eligible on Friday. Fantasy owners will want Conforto back as soon as possible. He was hitting .271/.406/.521 with nine home runs, 27 runs, 21 RBI and three steals before his injury. There's a chance he returns this weekend or early next week, barring any setbacks.
