Luiz Gohara Jun 1 11:00pm ET

The Los Angeles Angels released 39 minor leaguers last week, according to the official minor league transaction pages. They released 29 minor leaguers from March to May of 2019 and 19 from the same time frame in 2018. Pitchers Luiz Gohara, Luis Pena and Jeremy Rhoades were among those cut in the process. Gohara, a 23-year-old southpaw who was once a notable prospect with Atlanta, has a 5.33 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 49 innings in the big leagues with the Braves in 2017 and 2018 over 14 appearances (six starts).

Shohei Ohtani May 31 4:10pm ET

Los Angeles Angels starting pitchers Shohei Ohtani (elbow) and Griffin Canning (elbow) have each thrown three live batting practice sessions and are up to around 55 pitches. Both pitchers will remain at that level for now while the Players Union and MLB owners negotiate salaries and health concerns for a potential shortened 2020 season. Ohtani was expected to be ready around mid-June for a rotation spot following his recovery from Tommy John surgery, so he should be ready if the season were to start in early July. The Japanese two-way star is more valuable as a pitcher in fantasy, but he also should be owned in all leagues for his power/speed combination as a designated hitter. Canning dealt with issues to his UCL back in February and is trying to avoid the surgical route. Everything appears to be good for now, but the second-year hurler is a bit risky in shallow mixed leagues, especially in what would be a shortened season.

Griffin Canning May 31 3:13pm ET

Los Angeles Angels RHP Griffin Canning (elbow) has thrown three live batting practice sessions and is throwing around 55 pitches during the sessions.

Shohei Ohtani May 31 3:13pm ET

Los Angeles Angels RHP/OF Shohei Ohtani (elbow) has thrown three live batting practice sessions and is throwing around 55 pitches during the sessions.

Mike Papi May 31 2:23pm ET

Cleveland Indians OF Mike Papi was recently released by the Indians.

Luis Severino May 31 1:20pm ET

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino (elbow) is reportedly progressing well from his offseason Tommy John surgery. Severino underwent the surgery in February, and if he can continue to progress without setbacks then he should be healthy for the start of the 2021 season. Severino is a fantasy ace when healthy with an impressive 3.13 ERA and a 4.53 K:BB over the past three seasons. Although sometimes portrayed as injury-prone, Severino had back-to-back seasons with more than 190 innings pitched before last season. Fantasy owners should expect Severino to miss at most a few weeks to start next season and draft him as a future ace in dynasty leagues as a result.

Luis Severino May 31 9:13am ET

New York Yankees RHP Luis Severino (elbow) has been working out five days a week at the team's spring training complex in Tampa since undergoing Tommy John surgery in February. He has been doing arm bike and dumbbell exercises and hopes to resume throwing this summer. If all goes well, Severino could be fully recovered by June 2021.

Carlos Gonzalez May 29 5:53pm ET

Correcting a previous report, Seattle Mariners OF Carlos Gonzalez has not been released by the Mariners.

Brock Stewart May 28 10:40pm ET

The Chicago Cubs are in the process of cutting minor league players, and that includes second baseman Carlos Asuaje and relief pitcher Brock Stewart. Asuaje was last in the big leagues with the Padres in 2018 and hit .196 in 79 games. Stewart was taken in the Rule 5 draft and owns a career 6.05 ERA in four seasons between the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

Carlos Gonzalez May 28 3:13pm ET

Seattle Mariners OF Carlos Gonzalez was released Thursday, May 28.

Carlos Gonzalez May 28 2:20pm ET

Seattle Mariners outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is one of the players the Mariners are releasing among their minor league cuts. Gonzalez signed a minor league deal with the M's with an invite to spring training, where he hit .237 before the coronavirus shutdown in early March. The 34-year-old Venezuelan was a three-time All-Star with the Rockies but struggled mightily in 2019 in his first season away from Coors Field, hitting a combined .200/.289/.283 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 45 games (166 plate appearances) with the Indians and Cubs. Car-Go could resurface elsewhere, but he's unlikely to make much of an impact on a major league squad, especially in a shortened 2020 season.

    From RotoBaller

Cody Allen May 28 1:10pm ET

Texas Rangers relief pitcher Cody Allen (forearm), who had some minor arm issues this spring before baseball was shut down due to COVID-19, has been feeling good and has been throwing at Globe Life Field during the pandemic. It's unknown if he'll be ready to go if the MLB season kicks off in July, but the right-handed reliever's injury didn't sound too serious to begin with. Jose Leclerc should be the team's primary closer, with Rafael Montero also being a candidate for ninth-inning duties. Allen has plenty of closing experience with 153 career saves, but he posted a 6.26 ERA in 25 games with the Angels last year before being released. He's just hoping to win a bullpen job whenever the season starts, so Allen is off the fantasy radar currently.

    From RotoBaller

Daniel Mengden May 26 4:33pm ET

Oakland Athletics SP Daniel Mengden (elbow) said he is about 95 percent of the way back after undergoing three surgeries this offseason. Mengden said he's throwing all his pitches in bullpen sessions.

Daniel Mengden May 26 12:50pm ET

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden(elbow) said he expects to be ready for the start of the season whenever MLB is ready to resume play. Mengden had two surgeries on his digestive system this offseason and arthroscopic surgery on his pitching elbow in February. The right-hander would've missed the first few months of the season anyway, but he has been throwing in the bullpen and feels he is on track to start the season with the team. Despite being healthy, Mengden is an unappealing fantasy option. His 5.73 xFIP was worse than every qualified pitcher last season and he won't rack up strikeouts, either, thanks to a low 16.2 percent strikeout rate.

    From RotoBaller

Denard Span May 25 5:13pm ET

Free-agent OF Denard Span (Mariners) said he received a few minor league contract offers during the offseason but said he may be done with playing professional baseball.
