2019 RTSports Outlook

Bernard had 429 total yards and 35 receptions last season, serving as the change-of-pace back for the Bengals. The emergence of Joe Mixon as a three-down back led to less playing time for Bernard. His touches were down compared to past years, having carer lows in rush attempts, rushing yards, receptions and receiving yards. Bernard is likely to play a similar role this season with Mixon getting much of the work at running back for the Bengals. Bernard doesn't have great size at running back but has quick feet and does well in space. He does run pretty well between the tackles despite not being the biggest back, though. He also catches the ball very well out of the backfield. He probably doesn't have the ideal size to be an every-down back. Bernard has at least 35 receptions every season in the NFL.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:   Bernard is trending the wrong way, mainly because of Mixon becoming a star. He still has some fantasy value but in a spot play role. Expect around 500 total yards and three touchdowns with around 30 receptions.

Oct 19 6:10am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard hasn't done much in 2019, with that trend expected to continue in Week 7. The veteran has rushed for just 49 yards off of 23 attempts while racking up a subpar 108 receiving yards on 14 receptions so far this season. Joe Mixon continues to retain a firm grasp as the No. 1 option out of the backfield, so Bernard likely won't produce in all aspects until that changes, even with the team down A.J. Green (ankle) and John Ross (shoulder). For those fantasy managers who have Bernard on their roster for some reason, keep him benched against the Jaguars on Sunday.

Oct 13 6:23pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard rushed four times for just four yards in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens while adding two catches for 20 yards on three targets.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard was once one of the better receivers out of the backfield and a strong PPR fantasy play, but he is only worth using in the deepest of leagues at this point. The Bengals host the Jaguars in Week 7.

From TheHuddle

Oct 13 5:50pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard had just four yards on four carries during the loss to the Ravens on Sunday. With the team down a few critical options on the offensive end, the door was open for the veteran, who was targeted just three times, to get some extra looks from quarterback Andy Dalton. Unless the underperforming Joe Mixon gets injured, Bernard likely won't have any value moving ahead, especially once A.J. Green (ankle) returns to the lineup, which could come as soon as next Sunday against the Jaguars.

From RotoBaller

Oct 11 8:40am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard hasn't produced much so far this season. With the team dealing with some critical injuries on the offensive side of the ball, the veteran could see a few more targets out of the backfield from quarterback Andy Dalton against the Ravens. However, Bernard doesn't have much fantasy value at the moment, especially in non-PPR formats, with his only real chance to produce coming if No. 1 option Joe Mixon gets hurt. Bench him in all formats unless you are desperate.

From RotoBaller

Oct 6 5:03pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard rushed twice for 10 yards in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals and he added three grabs for 16 yards on his three targets.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard is simply used to spell starter Joe Mixon while seeing time occasionally in passing situations. Unless something happens to Mixon you should avoid Bernard outside of the deepest of PPR formats. The Bengals travel to meet the Baltimore Ravens in Week 6.

From TheHuddle

Oct 1 12:23am ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard rushed just one for three yards and he added four grabs for 16 yards on six targets in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, Sept. 30.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard steps in to give Joe Mixon a breather in the run game while seeing snaps in passing situations. As long as Mixon is healthy there is very little fantasy appeal for Bernard outside of deeper PPR leagues. The Bengals host the Cardinals in Week 5.

From TheHuddle

Sep 20 10:00am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard will serve as the backup to Joe Mixon on Sunday. As a result, don't expect much from the veteran when the Bengals face an effective Bills Defense. After almost starting for an injured Mixon against the 49ers, the 27-year-old was relegated to the No. 2 option and managed to finish with just six yards (six attempts) and one reception for seven yards. With Mixon likely to get the majority of touches against Buffalo in Week 3, Bernard should be benched in virtually all fantasy formats under 14 teams.

From RotoBaller

Sep 16 10:50pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon was active and started on Sunday, leaving Giovani Bernard to backup duties. Bernard played just 40% of the snaps on Sunday as Mixon played through his ankle injury without any setbacks. Bernard carried the ball six times for six yards and hauled in just one of his three targets for seven more yards. The long-time Bengals running back remains a must-own player if you have Mixon on your roster, but he can't be trusted in standard-sized leagues, especially non-PPR ones.

From RotoBaller

Sep 14 4:00pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard will have a big Week 2 if Joe Mixon misses the game because of his ankle injury. Mixon's status will need to be monitored throughout Sunday morning, but if he misses the game, Bernard will be a must-start fantasy running back in leagues of all sizes. Bernard made two starts in place of Mixon in 2018, and in those spots he touched the ball 36 times for 182 total yards and three touchdowns. The Week 2 matchup looks good for the Bengals running game, as the San Francisco 49ers Defense gave up 121 rushing yards on 26 attempts (4.7 yards per carry) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.

From RotoBaller

Sep 9 8:06am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard assumed full-time running back duties after Joe Mixon suffered an ankle injury in the Bengals Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. In Mixon's absence, Bernard carried the football seven times for just 21 yards as the eight-year veteran struggled to find running lanes against a Seattle defensive front that controlled the line of scrimmage. Bernard added two catches for 42 yards in a losing effort. If Mixon misses any time, Bernard will be in the RB2 conversation.

Sep 3 4:40pm ET

The Cincinnati Bengals signed running back Giovani Bernard to a two-year, $10.3 million extension on Tuesday, according to a source. He'll make $5.9 million in 2019 and $11 million over two seasons, including a $600,000 bonus due in March. Bernard is still only 27 years old, but it feels like he's been around for much longer in Cincy. He played in only 12 games last year and had a disappointing 56 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns while adding a career-low 35 receptions for 218 yards and no scores through the air. Bernard is the direct pass-catching handcuff to Joe Mixon and is a late-round target only in PPR leagues.

Sep 3 12:53pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard signed a two-year, $10.3 million extension Tuesday, Sept. 3. He received a raise to $5.9 million in 2019 and $11 million over two seasons. He receives a guaranteed $600,000 bonus in March.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard has some RB5 pop in PPR leagues, but he isn't utilized enough to be much more than a handcuff to Joe Mixon.

From TheHuddle

Aug 23 5:30am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard had four yards on three carries in addition to a reception during Thursday's preseason loss to the New York Giants. With Joe Mixon (rest) and Trayveon Williams (foot) out of the lineup, Bernard got in a little work on a night that saw Rodney Anderson, the team's potential third-string back, run for seven yards on eight carries. As the Bengals head into the final preseason matchup with the Colts, don't expect Bernard to be featured as he has a firm lock as the reserve to Mixon while also serving as a quasi-receiver out of the backfield.

From RotoBaller

Aug 12 7:03pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 12.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard is on track to be the No. 2 running back for the Bengals and should have a role in the passing game. He could be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues against favorable matchups this season.

From TheHuddle

Aug 8 7:33pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard will not play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 10.

Fantasy Spin: Mixon will be the main running back for the Bengals and will receive plenty of touches each game. He can be considered a No. 2 running back in all leagues. Bernard should have a role in the passing game and could be a flex option in point-per-reception leagues.

From TheHuddle

Aug 6 9:20pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard will remain with the team, at least for now, according to longtime beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. Bernard's agent was spotted in Cincy last week, fueling speculation that his tenure with the club was about to end before he is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season. The 27-year-old has compiled 27 touchdowns throughout six seasons with the club and is expected to back up Joe Mixon in 2019 despite rising pressure from rookie Trayveon Williams.

From RotoBaller

Aug 5 8:03pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (hamstring) was held out of practice Monday, Aug. 5, because he is dealing with a slight hamstring injury, according to head coach Zac Taylor.

Fantasy Spin: Bernard may miss the first preseason game, but it appears like he should return in the near future. He should be the No. 2 running back for the Bengals this season and can also be involved in the passing game. He has a chance to be a late-round option in fantasy drafts.

From TheHuddle

Aug 3 10:00am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernards future with the team remains uncertain. Bernards agent was spotted in Cincinnati and though there may have been talks of a contract extension, it would be easy to assume that he may be on the way out with the rising stock of rookie running back Trayveon Williams. Keep an eye on this situation.

From RotoBaller

Jul 5 10:23pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to see 11-13 touches per game in 2019, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, and Dehner expects Bernard and RB Joe Mixon to be on the field at the same time more often this season.

Fantasy Spin: He was used sparingly last year, but if he and Mixon are used together, it should boost Bernard's usage, especially in the passing game. He's worth grabbing as a RB4 in PPR formats, and Mixon owners should prioritize him as a handcuff.

From TheHuddle

Jul 5 5:50am ET

Cincinnati Bengals running back Giovani Bernard is looking to bounce back this season under new head coach Zac Taylor. Though running back Joe Mixon is projected to handle most of the snaps as the team's main rusher, Bernard is likely to become more involved by being utilized in different receiving schemes when the season begins in September. The 27-year-old, who has missed time throughout the years while battling knee issues, rushed for a career-low 211 yards last season while hauling in just 35 receptions for 218 yards. However, if he can remain healthy, he could be in store for a productive season under new leadership in Cincy, more so in PPR formats.
