After the release of running back Alexander Mattison on Thursday, Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler is the team's starter at the position. After the release of Dalvin Cook, Mattison operated as Minnesota's lead back in 2023, taking 180 carries for 700 yards and no rushing touchdowns. Chandler, a former fifth-round pick in 2022, served as a complementary back and saw 102 rushing attempts for 461 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and three rushing scores, adding 21 receptions for 159 additional yards in his second season. The 25-year-old was more efficient than Mattison and should have a bigger role in Minnesota's backfield in 2024, but the Vikings will likely look to add to their RB through the offseason, through either the draft or free agency, or both.

Jan 8 1:00pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler had a strong showing in Sunday's 30-20 loss to the Detroit Lions in the Week 18 regular season finale. Chandler had a team-high 12 carries for 69 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and caught two of his three targets through the air for an additional 20 yards. The 25-year-old second-year back was impressive against a strong Lions run defense and proved down the stretch that the Vikings probably should have gone to Chandler more often earlier in the season over Alexander Mattison. In four starts to close out the year, Chandler averaged 4.87 yards per tote, 258 rushing yards and two touchdowns while also catching eight passes for 69 yards. Going into the offseason, Chandler's fantasy stock will be on the rise as he makes his case to be Minnesota's primary ball-carrier in 2024.

Jan 7 9:10am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler can be left on the bench in most fantasy leagues ahead of his Week 18 game versus the Detroit Lions. A variety of factors contribute to Chandler's lack of reliability this week, including a very difficult matchup. The Lions' defense has surrendered the second-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs, holding them to an average of just 58.4 rushing yards per game. Furthermore, Chandler continues to split snaps with Alexander Mattison. The 25-year-old played just 57 percent of offensive snaps last week, accruing 40 rushing and 24 receiving yards. Fantasy managers preparing for the final week of the season should look elsewhere for production at the running back position.

Jan 1 1:50am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler fell out of the game plan in Week 17's 33-10 blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers, rushing 10 times for 40 yards and catching each of his three targets for 24 yards. The Vikings didn't stay competitive for particularly long on Sunday night, exiting the first half with a quarterback change and a 23-3 deficit. Chandler still out-touched a healthy Alexander Mattison 13-5 despite getting phased out in the second half, which is something that fantasy managers can at least consider a moral victory. Chandler's rise to the top of Minnesota's depth chart seemed to come at the right time for those who scooped him up off waiver wires for the fantasy playoffs, but his 157-yard, one-touchdown Week 15 ended up being his only difference-making effort since taking over the backfield. The speedy 25-year-old hopes his team can avoid operating in catch-up mode for Week 18 versus the Detroit Lions.

Dec 30 4:50pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler will look to keep rolling in Week 17 as he faces a Packers run defense that has allowed the third-most rushing yards this season with 2,039. Chandler had just eight carries for 17 yards last week, but the North Carolina product has found the end zone in back-to-back games since taking over as the lead back in the Minnesota offense. Alexander Mattison handled just two carries in Week 16 and was limited in practice due to an ankle ailment this week, so fantasy managers can treat Chandler as a borderline RB2/FLEX option on Sunday night.

Dec 25 2:00am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler maintained his stay atop the depth chart despite Alexander Mattison's (ankle) return in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Detroit Lions, but he ran for just 17 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Chandler nearly left with a disaster in Week 16 but rushed to the right for a two-yard score in the first quarter, which was about the only notable aspect of his afternoon. His usage was very disappointing, since Mattison went backwards on his two carries. But on a day where Minnesota was playing behind, Nick Mullens recklessly let it rip 36 times for 411 yards, two TDs, and four picks. Fantasy managers can at hang their hats on Chandler's lead role even with Mattison back in the picture, but it should be said that the Vikings reportedly planned a reduced workload for Mattison from the get-go. As it stands, Chandler is on the RB2 radar in Week 17 versus the Green Bay Packers.

Dec 24 8:40am ET

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to "ride" Ty Chandler in Week 16, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. While Alexander Mattison (hamstring) is expected to be active, he apparently won't return to his starting role. After all, he is less than 100 percent and struggled when healthy while Chandler dominated to the tune of 157 total yards and one touchdown last weekend. Although the exact dynamics of this backfield split are unclear, Chandler should handle the majority of Minnesota's offensive snaps and carries, putting him in the RB3 tier for fantasy football despite a tough matchup against the Detroit Lions. Mattison, on the other hand, can be benched in most formats.

Dec 23 2:20pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler will look to keep rolling in Week 16 after his first start of the season last week, where he got loose for 132 rushing yards and a touchdown versus the Bengals. The Vikings are expected to keep Chandler heavily involved in the offense this week as Alexander Mattison (ankle) continues to nurse his ankle injury, but he will have his work cut out for him against a Lions defense that has allowed just 3.8 yards per carry this season. Despite the tough matchup, the explosive North Carolina product should be able to provide fantasy managers with RB2 value as we continue through the fantasy playoffs.

Dec 21 12:20am ET

The Minnesota Vikings leaned on Alexander Mattison for most of the season. But following his absence in Week 15, Ty Chandler exploded for a career day. He rushed 23 times for 132 yards and one touchdown while catching three passes for 25 yards. That performance could help him land the Vikings top running back role moving forward. On Wednesday, head coach Kevin O'Connell also spoke highly of Chandler and said "We're kind of building with the mindset that Ty's gonna be a guy that we're trying to get the ball to a lot, both in the run and pass." Even if Mattison, who's nursing an ankle injury, does play in Week 16, Chandler should remain heavily involved on offense.

Dec 16 4:40pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler got loose for 132 rushing yards on 23 carries and added three receptions for 25 yards in the team's 27-24 loss to the Bengals. Chandler punched in a one-yard score in this one, as he took advantage of a favorable matchup in his first start of the season on Saturday. If Alexander Mattison continues to miss time, the North Carolina product will find himself in the RB2 discussion due to his workhorse role as the Vikings lead back.

Dec 16 4:30pm ET

Vikings' RB Ty Chandler ran for 132 yards on 23 carries with one touchdown in Saturday's loss in Cincinnati.

Dec 15 5:30pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler will look to take advantage of his opportunity in Week 15 as the explosive runner will take over the Vikings backfield against the Bengals. Chandler faces a Bengals run defense that has allowed 4.7 yards per carry this season, which is the third-most in the league. They have also given up the fourth-most rushing first downs with 101. Chandler showed his explosiveness in a good matchup against the Broncos back in Week 11, as he managed 110 scrimmage yards on 14 touches. With an increased role, fantasy managers can treat him as an RB2/FLEX option in Week 15.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 7:40pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler had 34 yards off 12 carries in Sunday's win over the Raiders. He also caught all three targets for seven yards. Chandler got more action in this one after Alexander Mattison (ankle) exited. While he didn't have the most productive showing, his outlook for the Week 15 meeting with Cincinnati is brighter, considering there's a chance Mattison isn't available. If that's the case, Chandler will become a popular streaming option for managers in all formats.

Nov 28 1:10am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler's recent surge up the backfield depth chart was momentarily stymied in Week 12's dispiriting 12-10 loss to the division-rival Chicago Bears, rushing four times for eight yards with one reception for three yards. Chandler "led" the team in rushing during the first half, running for a scant eight yards on three totes. And the speedy 25-year-old didn't get gain momentum at any point thereafter, either, finishing with a mere 11 scrimmage yards in the contest as a whole. It was a major disappointment for fantasy managers who hoped to catch lightning in a bottle perhaps akin to Keaton Mitchell with Chandler, who looked electric at times in the Week 11 defeat with 110 total yards on 14 touches. The Vikings remain very much committed to lead back Alexander Mattison, who averaged over five yards per carry on Monday for the first time in a game since Week 4. Chandler will be on many fantasy-roster bubbles during a Week 13 bye.

Nov 25 9:40pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler put together a fairly strong performance against the Denver Broncos last week. Chandler rushed 10 times for 73 yards, while hauling in all four of his targets for 27 yards through the air. Chandler has been operating as the No. 2 back to Alexander Mattison in the backfield. That should remain the case heading into the Week 12 matchup against the Chicago Bears. A defensive unit that has done extremely well against the running game this season. However, they've struggled to contain backs in the receiving game. That being said, Chandler is looking like a low-end flex option in PPR formats. He's unlikely to replicate his 73-yard performance on the ground, but could make an impact through the air.

Nov 21 2:50pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler had a big showing against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 11, posting 110 yards on 14 touches. He posted 45 yards and a rushing touchdown in the week prior. Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips wants to keep giving him opportunities. "I think he's shown that he making plays and we're going to continue to try to get him touches," said Phillips. "We're going to try to get him touches and make sure he's a part of it." Chandler might not have consistent fantasy value while sharing a backfield with Alexander Mattison, but the second-year back should be rostered in at least deep leagues after two impressive games. Mattison has struggled to fill the big shoes of Dalvin Cook, so this could become a clear committee moving forward. Cam Akers (Achilles) is out of the season with a torn Achilles.

Nov 20 12:50am ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler split touches with power back Alexander Mattison during Week 11's 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos. The NFL Network's Tom Pelissero relayed the planned setup of Chandler's continued increase in involvement on Sunday morning, and it came to fruition in this one. Both runners were equally impressive on the ground in the first half, as Chandler carried the rock six times for 30 yards. The 25-year-old keyed Minnesota's fourth-quarter scoring drive, running for 31 yards on a perfectly executed fake punt and 19 yards on a catch later on the possession. A thunder and lightning tandem could be brewing here (shades of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard in years past). Chandler's rising play appears to have earned him more playing time, as well as a place on fantasy's high-upside RB3 spectrum in Week 12 next Monday evening at home against the division-rival Chicago Bears.

Nov 18 2:10pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler could be in for lead-back duties in the team's Week 11 matchup with the Denver Broncos as Alexander Mattison (concussion) is listed as questionable. After Mattison departed early in Week 10, the 25-year-old carried the ball 15 times for 45 yards and found the end zone. Chandler would be an RB3/FLEX option if Mattison is unable to suit up, as the Broncos have given up a league-high 1425 rushing yards this season. Given that this game is on Sunday night, there is some risk involved for fantasy managers who may be relying on the popular waiver wire pickup this week. However, in a juicy matchup against the worst run defense in the NFL, it could pay off to take a wait-and-see approach for the Vikings backfield.

Dynasty | Vikings running back Ty Chandler handled a majority of the carries in Sunday's week-10 victory over the Saints Dynasty Analysis: Chandler had 15 touches to Alexander Mattison's nine and he scored a rushing touchdown as well. Lacking Dalvin Cook and, now, Cam Akers, the team has realized that Mattison may not be the answer as the bell cow back, opting for the shiftier Chandler. That said, it was Mattison's concussion that opened the door for Chandler. Whether the workload remains is a question that will be answered in week eleven though all signs point to an ongoing committee with looming lackluster consistency expected. In any case, it's good news for the 25-year-old Chandler who may see an expanded role in the second half of the season. He's listed as DLF's RB71.

Nov 13 1:40pm ET

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler went from being a relative unknown in the fantasy world to a top waiver-wire pickup in the span of a week. First, backup Cam Akers suffered a season-ending left Achilles tear last week. Then, lead back Alexander Mattison (concussion) was forced to leave the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints, leaving Chandler in the No. 1 role. The 25-year-old saw a team-high 15 carries on Sunday and gained 45 yards (3.0 yards per carry) and the first touchdown of his career. He was not involved in the passing game. Chandler would operate as Minnesota's lead back most likely if Mattison misses any time going forward, beginning with a juicy Week 11 matchup on Sunday night against the sieve-like Denver Broncos run defense.
