No Playoff Match Up |
The Indianapolis Colts waived running back Evan Hull on roster cutdown day on Tuesday, according to a source. Hull did not make the 53-man roster out of training camp after he was selected in the fifth round last year out of Northwestern. In his rookie campaign, the 23-year-old only appeared in one game and had one carry for a one-yard pickup while catching his only target for a six-yard pickup before suffering a knee injury that kept him out the rest of the way. It would be surprising if the speedy and powerful back didn't land elsewhere for RB depth, and at the worst, he'll return to the Colts' practice squad after losing out to Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson as the backups to starter Jonathan Taylor. Hull is more of a short-yardage, between-the-tackles runner than he is a pass-catching option out in space.

Indianapolis Colts running back Evan Hull has seen extensive work with the second-team offense during joint practices with the Arizona Cardinals. Trey Sermon (hamstring) had previously cemented himself as the Colts' second-string RB, but that was before he left Sunday's game against Denver early after injuring his hamstring. As of Wednesday, head coach Shane Steichen had no timetable for Sermon's return. In his wake, Hull has taken the role and ran with it. If Sermon were to miss extended time, Hull would be on fantasy manager's radars as the preferred handcuff to back up Jonathan Taylor. Whoever emerges as the handcuff to own would not hold stand-alone value, though they would be a critical fantasy asset if Taylor missed any time. For now, we'll take the wait-and-see approach regarding Indianapolis' backup to own in fantasy drafts.

Indianapolis Colts running back Evan Hull carried the ball eight times for 16 yards and a touchdown in the team's loss to the Denver Broncos. Hull also reeled in his only target for an additional 15 yards through the air. Hull led all of Indy's running backs in touches, seeing one more carry than Tyler Goodson. Hull is currently listed as the RB4 on the team's depth chart, and with an injury to Trey Sermon, he will try to climb further up the depth chart to potentially land the RB2 role in the offense. Unless he finds himself in the mix for the RB2 role behind Jonathan Taylor, Hull will be off the fantasy radar in 2024.

Indianapolis Colts running back Evan Hull (knee) played in just one game and eight offensive snaps in his rookie season in 2023 before suffering a season-ending knee injury in which he tore his left MCL. "It was a root tear, so it was a little different than your typical tear in the body, which would be more of a six- to eight-week type of thing that we see typically," Hull said. The former third-rounder was cleared to resume all football activities a few weeks after offseason organized team activities begin, and he's been competing alongside Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson as the Colts evaluate who will serve as the primary back to Jonathan Taylor in 2024. Sermon is probably the favorite for the No. 2 backfield job, but Hull could see some third-down work in his second season in the NFL.
From RotoBaller
Indianapolis Colts running back Evan Hull could still earn the backup role despite some speculation suggesting the job belonged to Trey Sermon. According to James Boyd of The Athletic, "it remains unclear" who will operate as the No. 2 option behind Jonathan Taylor in 2024. He notes that while Sermon may be the early favorite, the former 49ers draft pick has just 78 carries for 346 yards and one touchdown in his career. Whoever takes over as Taylor's backup will be filling big shoes. Last season, that role belonged to Zack Moss, who finished the year with 986 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns. Moss is now in Cincinnati, leaving a competition of sorts for Sermon and Hull. As a rookie last year, Hull mustered just one rushing yards and six receiving yards.
