San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida (pectoral) has a slightly torn pectoral muscle but will not need surgery. He will miss organized team activities but should be ready for the start of training camp this summer. Breida seemingly played injured for most of the 2018 season but managed to run the ball 153 times for 814 yards (5.3 average) and three touchdowns in 14 games. It looks like he'll be ready for the start of the season, but an injury of this nature could hurt him as he attempts to distance himself in a crowded backfield that includes Tevin Coleman, Jerick McKinnon, Jeffery Wilson and Raheem Mostert.

May 21 4:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (pectoral) will not take part in organized team activities after slightly tearing a pectoral muscle while lifting weights this spring. Breida is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, however.

May 16 12:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida said Wednesday, May 15, the team could feature a three-man running back rotation also involving Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman. 'They've talked to us about it,' Breida said. 'They've said, 'Hey, we're going to use all you guys.' All three of us are going to be used a lot. I don't want to give away any secrets, but we're all going to be used in the offense.' It's still too early/unclear how snaps will be divided.

Fantasy Spin: There are ample fantasy points to be found with Kyle Shanahan running backs, but the current three-pronged outlook doesn't bode well for fantasy GMs at the moment. Hopefully you'll have ample time before your drafts to see if the picture takes on some clarity.

Apr 5 2:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RBs Tevin Coleman Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida, Jeffery Wilson and Raheem Mostert will ultimately decide who plays and how much each one plays, according to comments made by head coach Kyle Shanahan on the Adam Schefter podcast recently. 'Everyone keeps asking me that like I'm in charge of that or something,' Shanahan said with a laugh. 'It's up to the players. They will define their roles. That's kind of what's unique about this.'

Fantasy Spin: The common assumption since Coleman signed in March was that he would probably handle more carries than anyone else in this backfield in 2019, but it could easily be argued Breida was more impressive in 2018 than Coleman was at any point during his time with Shanahan in Atlanta. It is shaping up to be an unpredictable backfield, although McKinnon's role as the pass-catching back - assuming he is recovered from his ACL injury - would seem to be the most secure.

Mar 16 7:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is expected to lead what could be a group of four active running backs on game days this season. Coleman and fellow RBs Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert would comprise the foursome.

Fantasy Spin: It's an admirable group, but this could be a nuisance for fantasy purposes. Coleman is the running back to own in San Francisco, but McKinnon and company really limit his ceiling. Both Coleman and McKinnon still possess PPR RB2 upside.

Dec 29 4:23pm ET

The San Francisco 49ers placed RB Matt Breida (ankle) on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 29, ending his season with 814 rushing yards and three touchdowns across 14 games.

Fantasy Spin: Breida was battling a nagging ankle injury and other assorted bumps and bruises throughout the season, but he did a pretty decent job at times stepping in for the injured Jerick McKinnon. His fantasy appeal in 2019 will be predicated on McKinnon's rehab and how the workload is distributed.

Dec 28 7:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 28, and has been ruled out for Week 17.

Fantasy Spin: Jeffery Wilson should receive the start with Breida ruled out and has played well in his limited time this season. He can be considered a No. 2 running back or flex option in most leagues.

Dec 27 6:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) and WR Dante Pettis (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 27. LBs Malcolm Smith (Achilles), Mark Nzeocha (groin), CB K'Waun Williams (knee), C Erik Magnuson (hamstring) and TE Garrett Celek (concussion) were limited, while DE Arik Armstead (hand), OT Joe Staley (non-injury) and C Weston Richburg (knee) practiced in full.

Dec 26 6:03pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle), LB Mark Nzeocha (groin), WR Dante Pettis (knee) and OT Joe Staley (rest) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 26. TE Garrett Celek (concussion), C Weston Richburg (knee), LB Malcolm Smith (Achilles') and CB K'Waun Williams (knee) were limited. DE Arik Armstead (hand) participated fully.

Dec 24 3:40pm ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida (ankle) will not play in Week 17 against the Rams after aggravating his ankle injury early in the Week 16 loss to the Bears. Breida's season will mercifully come to an end after playing hurt for most of the season. Despite the bum ankle, he ran 153 times for 814 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and three touchdowns while also catching 27 passes for 261 yards and two more scores. He should mix in with Jerick McKinnon in 2019. With Breida out for the season finale, Jeffery Wilson will be the lead back and will have RB2 upside as long as game script doesn't work against him.

Dec 24 3:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) will not play in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fantasy Spin: It means Jeff Wilson should have the backfield to himself. Despite consistently fighting through and reinjuring his ankle on almost a weekly basis from Week 5 on, Breida proved he has the ability to be a very good starting running back in the league. He will likely be on equal footing with Jerick McKinnon to begin 2019 and should be viewed as a flex option at the very least.

Dec 24 11:00am ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida (ankle) reinjured his ankle in Week 16 against the Chicago Bears. Breida totaled just four carries for 20 yards and caught a six-yard pass prior to exiting the game. The tough second-year player has worked hard to get on the field each week despite the lingering ankle issues but has increasingly missed snaps as the seasons progressed. It may make sense for the Niners to shut him down in Week 17. Even if Breida does suit up, hell be a risky flex option that will again be susceptible to an in-game setback.

Dec 23 11:53pm ET

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) did not return against the Chicago Bears in Week 16 after suffering an ankle injury. He finished with four carries for 20 yards and caught one pass for six yards before exiting.

Fantasy Spin: Breida has been battling injuries over the final weeks, and if he can't suit up in the final week of the season, Jeff Wilson will have some flex potential as the lead back.

Dec 23 5:33pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) left the Week 16 game against the Chicago Bears in the first half due to an ankle injury and he was taken to the locker room. Breida is questionable to return.

Fantasy Spin: With Breida off at the moment it appears Jeff Wilson Jr. will be the lead tailback for the 49ers.

Dec 21 4:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Dec. 21, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.

Fantasy Spin: Breida returned to the lineup last week and posted nearly 100 yards in total offense. He will be facing a tougher defense this week but can still be a No. 2 running back or flex option for owners.

Dec 20 7:03pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Dec. 20.

Fantasy Spin: Breida again had to exit the team's last game due to his injured ankle but it looks like that won't keep him from suiting up in Week 16. Even so, he's a dicey play considering he's had to depart in his last two games. Additionally, the emergence of Jeff Wilson means he may see less than his usual workload. Owners should ponder more reliable options than Breida.

Dec 19 5:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (ankle) practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Fantasy Spin: Breida is building a reputation for fragility as it seems he is hurt or aggravates an injury every week now. If he can't enter the weekend at full health then he's not worth starting in a daunting matchup with the Chicago Bears.
