2019 RTSports Outlook

Gronk didn't play a full season, missing two games, but still finished second overall in fantasy tight end scoring and had a 1,000-yard season. He had three 100-yard games and scored eight touchdowns. He had seven games with 80-plus yards. Gronk was his usual consistent self for the Patriots. He has 1,000-yard seasons three of his last four. Injuries are always a concern for him, but he has been pretty healthy three of the last four years. He is the top target in the Patriots explosive offense. Gronk has great size, runs good routes and has enough speed to make plays downfield. He is the complete package at tight end and maybe the toughest cover in the game.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Gronk is always a risk because of his injury history, but his upside is though the roof in this offense. He produces like an elite receiver more than a top tight end. He can be a difference maker for fantasy teams. Just make sure you have a top backup for him if you draft him early. If he plays a full season, expect around 75 receptions for 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns. He should be the first tight end taken come draft day.

Retired TE Rob Gronkowski has a 40-percent chance of returning to play for the New England Patriots this season, a source close to the tight end told Pro Football Talk's Miuke Florio on Tuesday, July 16. The report speculates that Gronkowski may come back for the 'good stuff,' the end of the season and playoffs.

Fantasy Spin: This obviously would be a huge turn of events for the Pats, but a late-season return wouldn't do much for fantasy GMs. Steer clear for now, but also keep your ears open if the Gronk rumors heat up.

Jul 9 9:03am ET

Former New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski worked out in a private throwing session with Patriots QB Tom Brady Monday, July 8.

Fantasy Spin: So, you're saying there's a chance? It still seems unlikely Gronk would return after shedding 20 pounds, but stranger things have happened. Keep an eye on the situation.

Jun 5 5:20pm ET

The New England Patriots released tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, according to a source. Seferian-Jenkins is stepping away for a month for personal issues and the club will release him when he does that. ASF is still only 26 years old but has had numerous off-field issues in his career that have held him back. Even with the Patriots he wouldn't have been a very attractive fantasy option after catching only 11 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games with Jacksonville in 2018 due to injuries. Benjamin Watson will be suspended for the first four weeks, so Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson and rookie Andrew Beck will be next up as they try to replace future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski.

Apr 10 2:30pm ET

The New England Patriots signed free-agent tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to an undisclosed one-year deal on Wednesday, according to a source. ASF has had off-field issues throughout his career and has also been set back by injuries, but the Pats decided to take a flier on him after Rob Gronkowski hung up his cleats in the offseason. Seferian-Jenkins had just 11 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games due to injury in his lone season with Jacksonville. He'll have a chance to carve out a role in New England as their top pass catcher, but he'll need to stay on track and stay healthy. He'll be fighting for playing time with Jacob Hollister, Stephen Anderson and Matt LaCosse.

Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for tight end Rob Gronkowski, said he wouldn't be surprised if his client came out of retirement to play for the New England Patriots again. "If the team was struggling or they needed him at some point next year, and lets just say hypothetically Tom Brady gave him a call and said Rob, I need you. I wouldnt be shocked if he came back to play a few games," Rosenhaus said. Gronk seems to be comfortable in his decision to move on from football after winning his third Super Bowl ring last season. The debate now begins as to whether the 29-year-old was the greatest to play his position after accumulating 521 receptions, 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns in nine NFL seasons.

Mar 25 10:23am ET

Former New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Monday, March 25, that if Patriots QB Tom Brady called Gronk and said the team needed him at some point next year, he could come back to play a few games.

Mar 24 6:13pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from the NFL Sunday, March 24.

Fantasy Spin: The Patriots have lost Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen this offseason, so they probably will be looking for a tight end early in the 2019 NFL Draft. None of the other tight ends on the Patriots roster have a lot of fantasy value.

Mar 24 6:10pm ET

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski announced on Sunday that he is retiring. The 29-year-old Gronk finished on a high note in the postseason and goes out on top with another Super Bowl ring, but he struggled to gain separation from defenders in the regular season and finished with 47 catches for 682 yards and three touchdowns during the regular season in 13 games. Gronkowski had four 1,000-yard receiving seasons and amassed a whopping 79 regular season scores in his nine-year career. He'll go down as one of the most dominant tight ends in NFL history. With Gronk no longer around, Stephen Anderson will be the top tight end on the depth chart, although he won't be much of a fantasy consideration. Losing Gronk as a safety blanket will surely affect quarterback Tom Brady negatively moving forward.

Mar 11 2:23pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has yet to make a decision about whether to retire or keep playing in 2019, according to his agent, who told ESPN's NFL Live that Gronkowski is 'healthy' and 'feeling a lot better' after playing through an injury in the Super Bowl.

Feb 19 2:40pm ET

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said his client will likely make a decision on his playing future "in the next couple of weeks." While Gronk looked somewhat rejuvenated late in the team's Super Bowl run, the 29-year-old has been worn down by injuries throughout his career and has clearly lost a step. He hasn't played a full season since 2011 and had 47 catches for only 682 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last year. He'd still be in the TE1 conversation if he returns for another season, but Gronkowski is no longer what we'd call an elite TE1.

Feb 17 9:40pm ET

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski remains non-committal about his playing future, but he has shown up to Gillette Stadium multiple times over the last couple of weeks. Gronk might just be receiving treatment for his thigh, but ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss views it as the tight end being in a good place with how the season ended. Gronkowski will be 30 if he plays in 2019, and he remains a big injury risk that looked much slower in 2018. He'd still be a TE1 if he returns for another season, but Gronk is no longer elite at a very weak position.

Feb 17 12:43pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has visited the team's facilities at Gillette Stadium multiple times since Super Bowl LIII, and one Patriots beat reporter sees that as a 'reflection of his being in a good place with how the season ended, both team-wise and personally.'

Fantasy Spin: There's still no indication if Gronk will return for a 10th season, but his strong postseason (19 targets-13 receptions-191 yards-0 TDs in three games) that followed one of his least productive regular seasons (72-47-682-3 in 13 games) just might've tipped the balance. Stay tuned ...

Feb 4 11:33am ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski hinted at a return in a suggestive video on QB Tom Brady's Instagram after the Super Bowl victory Sunday, Feb. 3. The video shows Gronkowski weighing his options and Brady nodding his head to return before Gronkowski appears to agree with 'to be continued' afterwards.

Fantasy Spin: Gronk's 47-682-3 line made him a bust for the early pick invested on him, and it's clear he is declining. He'll be 30 next year and is still one of the better options at the position. However, injury risk and name value may inflate the price tag to draft him.

Feb 4 1:03am ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski said he will decide whether or not he'll continue his career 'in a few weeks or so' during comments made following Super Bowl LIII.

Fantasy Spin: It was already expected that Gronk wouldn't make any knee-jerk decisions immediately following the Super Bowl, but based on his comments we may have the answer to whether or not he'll suit up in 2019 by the time free agency starts early next month.

Feb 3 11:23pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski caught seven of his eight targets for 87 yards in a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

Fantasy Spin: His highlight came when he hauled in a pass in triple coverage that set up the game's only touchdown. Rumors have been swirling that he may decide to retire, so keep an eye on his status as the offseason unfolds.

Feb 3 7:43pm ET

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (lower body) returned to the field in the second quarter of Super Bowl XLIII against the Los Angeles Rams and he did not miss a play. He reportedly didn't receive any medical attention on the sidelines after a rough hit which forced him to limp off on the previous drive.

Feb 3 7:33pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (lower body) suffered an undisclosed lower-body injury in the second quarter of Super Bowl XLIII against the Los Angeles Rams and he limped off the field.

Feb 3 3:03pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is entering Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, Feb. 3, healthier than he's been at almost any point this season, in which he's battled a bulging disk in his back and Achilles tendinitis.

Fantasy Spin: Gronk has been blocking like a man possessed in the playoffs, and even more important on the fantasy side, he drew a season-high 11 targets in the AFC Championship Game and finished with six catches for 79 yards. With the possibility that it might be Gronk's last game, don't be surprised if he's featured early and often Sunday.

Feb 3 1:10pm ET

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is as healthy as he's been all season for the Super Bowl on Sunday against the Rams. Sources are saying that Gronk is 100 percent after fighting injuries for much of the year. He was dealing with Achilles tendonitis in Week 5 and a bulging disc in his back in Week 7. Gronkowski hasn't been on the injury report during the playoffs and had one of his best games of the season in the AFC Championship against the Chiefs. Gronk could have another big game against the Rams, a team that allowed 13.6 fantasy points per week to tight ends in 2018. The future Hall of Famer could retire this offseason because of all the injuries he's sustained throughout his career, and he was noticeably slower and more ineffective than he's ever been in 2018.

Feb 3 12:03pm ET

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, who is reportedly contemplating retirement, is not expected to make an official decision regarding his future immediately after Super Bowl LIII is over, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Fantasy Spin: Gronkowski caught six passes for 79 yards in the AFC Championship Game but struggled during most of the second half of the season after being hampered by ankle and back injuries. He will be 30 years old by the time the 2019 season begins but can still be viewed as a solid TE1 option if he continues playing.
