2019 RTSports Outlook

Barber was the lead back for the Bucs almost all of last season, having double-digit carries all but two games. He was a little underwhelming much of the year, though. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and had fewer than 50-rushing yards nine times. Barber had 963 total yards on the season, averaging 60.1 total yards per game. He is likely to return to more of a reserve role this year. Barber is a pretty powerful back that does well between the tackles. He does try to make defenders miss too much and go for the big play, causing him to lose out on some yards. Barber needs to do a better job of getting downhill in a hurry.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Barber probably peaked last year. He is not likely to get the same workload. Barber still might be worth a late-round grab but that is about it. He can get around 500 total yards and a few scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Ronald Jones II's NFL career has been off to a rough start. After getting drafted in the second round of the 2018 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, expectations were high for the Trojan running back coming off of an extremely successful college career. RoJo produced 3619 rushing yards (6.1 ypc) and 42 total touchdowns in his three seasons at USC. Jones was expected to slide right into the starting role, but after a tumultuous preseason, he was usurped by for UDFA Peyton Barber. Jones failed to play his way into much work throughout the year by rushing 23 times for just 44 yards. Going into 2019, plenty of question marks remain around the Buccaneers backfield. Peyton Barber displayed a competent ability to carry the load last season and UDFA Bruce Anderson is also lying in the woodworks waiting for an opportunity to open up. If Jones can impress the new coaching staff this preseason, he will be at the forefront of a Bruce Arians led offense that should prove extremely valuable in fantasy. RoJo's current ADP is below that of Peyton Barber which seems wrong. The Buccaneers invested draft capital and will give him every opportunity to prove himself. This is a redemption year for a talented running back who can potentially become a majority carry-holder by Week one. He's worth grabbing at the current price.

Buccaneers running back Peyton Barber had a solid showing in his first taste of preseason action in 2019. Barber amassed 18 yards on just three carries and caught one pass for four yards. He started the game but split rushing duties with Ronald Jones II and will presumably continue to do so into the season unless one of the duo gives the team enough justification to break it up. Barber was the team's leading rusher last season but underwhelmed in that role.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber will be the starting running back in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, but head coach Bruce Arians said he would also like to see RB Ronald Jones play with the first-team offensive line.

Fantasy Spin: It appears like Barber will be the starting running back this season, but Jones should have a bigger role in the offense. Barber can be a No. 3 running back in standard leagues, while Jones can be a handcuff or a late-round option in leagues.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Ronald Jones and Peyton Barber will have a good battle for regular-season playing time this preseason, according to new head coach Bruce Arians.

Fantasy Spin: Barber was the significantly better of the two last season, but he recorded just 963 yards from scrimmage and six total touchdowns on 254 combined touches. Jones has been going slightly early in 2019 fantasy drafts, and while he has the higher ceiling as a sophomore, Barber seems to be the one penciled into the starting role.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber is the team's most experienced running back, and the new offensive staff has been very complimentary of him after breaking down his film over the last couple of seasons. According to Mark Cook of, it would be a shock if Barber doesn't come out of camp as the starting running back over Ronald Jones.

Fantasy Spin: It's not a surprising take because Barber is the incumbent, but it flies in the face of what owners have heard coming out of Florida this offseason. The fact of the matter is the job is most likely for the taking by whichever running back shows best in preseason action. Barber became the first back since 2013 to amass fewer than 1,000 yards on more than 250 touches last season, so it's not as if he set the world on fire either. Jones will get his shot to start; he just has to take advantage of it.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber will receive close to 45 targets in 2019, according to Taylor Jenkins of

Fantasy Spin: Jenkins projects Barber to be the every-down back for the Bucs this season. The 25-year-old caught 20 of 29 targets while starting all 16 games last year, but he went for just 92 yards and one touchdown through the air. He's an adequate RB3 play in standard leagues if he's able to hold off Ronald Jones II in training camp, but Jones has the higher upside.

Jun 30 9:43pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber is 'certainly likely' to lead the team in rushing, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.

Fantasy Spin: The hype around Ronald Jones has been building throughout the offseason, and while he does have the higher ceiling, he is far from a sure thing. Barber should see his share of carries on early downs regardless of how Jones performs, making him a volume-based flex candidate.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber is still held in high regard by the team, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic. Auman adds the 25-year-old was the first rusher in the last five years to rack up 250-plus touches but fail to compile 1,000 yards from scrimmage in 2018.

Fantasy Spin: Barber scored six total touchdowns last year on 963 yards from scrimmage. An undrafted free-agent signing in 2016, he outperformed rookie second-rounder Ronald Jones II in 2018, but Jones' draft pedigree is likely to ensure he gets another look at a full workload as a sophomore. Barber has a decent floor as a mid-round selection, but he doesn't have a very high ceiling.

May 26 8:43pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber has received a lot of work catching passes out of the backfield during OTAs, and head coach Bruce Arians said Barber has the potential to be a three-down back.

Fantasy Spin: Barber was a volume-based flex option last year, and while he isn't going to suddenly become an explosive runner, his value would receive a huge boost if he is used routinely on third downs. He's a RB3 with upside for now.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber said in a radio interview Wednesday, March 20 that he has a lot to prove. 'I want to break 1,000 yards and prove I'm an every down running back,' Barber said.

Fantasy Spin: Barber re-signed for one year and head coach Bruce Arians has spoken glowingly of the back since taking over the head coaching job. If he is used as the bellcow back in 2019, he could be a solid RB3 or flex fantasy option in most leagues.

Mar 14 1:13am ET

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed RB Peyton Barber to a one-year contract worth $2.125 million on Wednesday, March 13. The deal involves $1 million in guaranteed money.

Fantasy Spin: The Bucs didn't have to invest a lot of bread in Barber, who head coach Bruce Arians said he likes. Barber had a career-low 3.7 yards per carry, but his usage was way up. He had career highs with 234 carries, 871 rushing yards, five rushing scores, 20 receptions, 29 targets and his first-career receiving touchdown. He has also missed just one game over his three-year NFL career. Barber will lead the way in front of Jacquizz Rodgers and Ronald Jones.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Barber drew praise recently from new head coach Bruce Arians. 'I love him. When you watch the tape, you don't see him as 230. You see him as a 205-pound running back with great feet. Not every back's going to be a home-run hitter, but he gets those 10-, 15-yard runs, breaking tackles, a power runner, punishing runner, that's the kind I like to start. When we're building something, that's the kind I want to build around,' Arians told The Athletic.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers restricted free-agent RB Peyton Barber likely will receive a tender offer this offseason.

Fantasy Spin: Barber led the team with 871 yards this past season and could be the starting running back again in 2019 depending on what the team does at the position. He can be a No. 3 fantasy running back in standard leagues if he is the starter for Tampa Bay.
