No quarterback had a lower percentage of passes over 20 yards in 2019 than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, according to Pro Football Focus. The Niners added wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in the first round of last month's draft, but he's more of a run-after-the-catch prospect. The plan of short throws and long runs after the catch appears to be the plan again for Garoppolo and the offense in 2020. And under head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers offense is expected to remain run-heavy, leaving Jimmy G with not a whole lot of fantasy upside. In essence, he's a glorified game manager in San Francisco, making him a low-ceiling QB2.

May 8 1:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo received a solid vote of confidence from general manager John Lynch during a recent podcast interview with a team beat reporter. 'He (Garoppolo) takes a lot of heat for a guy who had excellent numbers and brought his team to the Super Bowl last year,' Lynch said. 'We thought Jimmy was a big reason we were at the Super Bowl. That, I guess, gave us more cause to go look a little deeper. What we said was, 'We got the answer right in the building.' And that's exciting for us because we think Jimmy's best ball is in front of him, for a number of reasons. Physically, he'll be another year away from the knee injury. Experience at that position is so critical, as you can file in the bank experiences that you've gone through and say, 'OK, I've seen this before.' That only comes through going out there and competing.'

Fantasy Spin: Jimmy G. threw for 3,978 yards, 27 TDs and 13 interceptions in 2019 to finish as fantasy's 15th-best QB in terms of total points scored. Garoppolo likely will never be an elite fantasy QB option playing for the run-first Niners, but he's everything you'd want in a QB2/streaming option.

The San Francisco 49ers traded a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick to the Washington Redskins on Saturday to acquire Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, but neither side is in a rush to work out a contract extension. As of now, Williams is expected to play out the final year of his current contract in 2020, which will pay him $12.5 million. It's mainly because it's been 482 days since Williams last played in an NFL game after sitting out all last season. General manager John Lynch made it sound like the Niners want to get a look at Williams in person before starting the whole extension process. With Joe Staley retiring, Williams should step in immediately as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's blind-side protector.

Apr 25 4:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley officially announced his retirement from the NFL. Staley told the 49ers he was retiring, so they went ahead and traded for left tackle Trent Williams right before their fourth-round pick on Saturday. Staley was a first-round pick (28th overall) of the Niners back in 2007 and was a six-time Pro Bowler in his successful and lengthy career. He only played in seven games in 2019 because of injury and felt it was time to hang up his cleats. Williams, a perennial Pro Bowler himself, will step in immediately on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's blind side in 2020 despite sitting out all of 2019.

The Washington Redskins agreed to terms on a trade of left tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. The Niners will get help at a position of need and will send the Redskins a fifth-round pick this year and a third-rounder in 2021. With Joe Staley yet to declare his status for 2020, the 49ers are acting now and grabbing a perennial Pro Bowl tackle in Williams. Williams did not play at all in 2019, but he can step in right away in San Francisco if Staley retires and protect quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's blind side. The Redskins waited a while to get this Williams trade done, but it comes just before Day 3 of the NFL draft. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was in D.C. when the 'Skins drafted Williams.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday that the team briefly considered quarterback Tom Brady in free agency. "But within a day or two, Kyle and I looked at each other and said, 'You know what, we really like what we have in Jimmy.' We love everything that he brings and we really believe it's a long-term answer. I would tell you we're more convinced than ever about who our quarterback is in Jimmy Garoppolo," Lynch said. Garoppolo started every game in 2019 for the first time in his career and led the team to a Super Bowl appearance. He threw for 3,978 yards (fourth most in a season in team history) and completed 69.1 percent of his passes in the regular season. Despite the good numbers, many remain skeptical that Jimmy G is an elite signal-caller, as he's struggled in big moments and under pressure. As far as fantasy, he'll be a midrange QB2 in a Niners offense that is built on the running game.

If the San Francisco 49ers add another quarterback to the mix, it would likely be as pick during the third day of the NFL Draft or as an undrafted free agent. The 49ers have Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter and he's backed up by QBs Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard.

Apr 11 3:03pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo on Friday, April 10, continued to receive backing from teammate George Kittle. 'Jimmy G is my quarterback, and he's one hell of a quarterback, ' Kittle said on the Pro Football Talk podcast. 'We don't get to the Super Bowl without him. So there's no one that I'd replace him with. What he's done for this team leadership-wise and on the field, he's one of a kind.'

Fantasy Spin: Fantasy-wise, Garoppolo finished 15th among QBs with 319.1 total points while ranking 19th in the league with 476 pass attempts. Expect the Niners to remain run-oriented and Jimmy G to have another QB2 season.

Mar 29 4:33pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was 'on target' - defined as a throw that would have hit the receiver - on 80.7 percent of his passes in 2019 - the fourth-highest mark in the league.

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley (leg) is expected to return for the final year of his contract in 2020 after there was speculation that he would retire from the game after a Super Bowl run in 2019. The 13-year veteran missed nine games last season due to a broken leg, but he was solid as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's blind-side protector when he was on the field. Staley allowed just seven QB pressures in 240 pass-blocking snaps last year for a pressure rate of 2.9 percent, which trailed just Ronnie Stanley and Taylor Lewan among left tackles, according to Pro Football Focus. Staley's return would be great news for Jimmy G.

Feb 25 7:33pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will remain the team's starting quarterback for the long-term, according to general manager John Lynch Tuesday, Feb. 25. 'We're extremely proud of Jimmy and committed to Jimmy moving forward. He's our guy,' Lynch said, per Jennifer Lee Chan of 'The room for growth has not come close to hitting the ceiling.'

Fantasy Spin: Garoppolo has drawn the ire of fans for his unimpressive passing numbers in the playoffs and in Super Bowl LIV. He was highly efficient in the 2019 regular season while completing 69.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. His fantasy allure will remain capped as long as the Niners stay committed to a run-first attack and he'll enter 2020 drafts as a mid-tier QB2.

From TheHuddle

Feb 13 9:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo's 31 pass attempts of 20 or more yards in 2019 were tied for 29th in the league and were the fewest among quarterbacks who started all 16 games.

Fantasy Spin: Garoppolo had a handful of big performances last year, and 15 of his 27 touchdown passes came in four games. With the 49ers leaning heavily on the run, the big plays and big games are likely to remain sporadic for Garoppolo in 2020. Consider him a QB2.

Feb 7 9:43am ET

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is still a supporter of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo despite his dud in the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs. Same as it was the day before the Super Bowl, Shanahan said of his support for Garoppolo. There's no difference. He was on his way close to a Super Bowl MVP and we all know we didn't ... make those plays at the end but we made those plays all year, our whole team, that's one of the reasons we were there. In Jimmy G's defense, 2019 was his first full season as a starter in the NFL after backing up Tom Brady in New England for three years and playing just nine games in his first two years in San Fran due to injuries. Garoppolo has potential for QB1 games, but he'll remain more of a QB2 for fantasy owners as long as the Niners continue to lean on their ground game and defense.

Feb 6 2:13pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB JImmy Garoppolo will remain the team's starting quarterback, head coach Kyle Shanahan said in an interview released Thursday, Feb. 6.

Fantasy Spin: Despite the 49ers' 2019 success, Garoppolo had an up-and-down season and finished 15th overall among fantasy QBs. He'll remain a solid QB2 option in one of the league's top offenses.

Feb 3 12:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 20 of 31 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Garoppolo played his standard role through most of the contest, facilitating running schemes and connecting with efficient completions when necessary. His touchdown pass came in the second quarter on a 15-yard strike to fullback Kyle Juszczyk. However, Jimmy G faltered down the stretch after the Niners fell behind. Garoppolo converted just two of seven attempts in his final two possessions, taking a critical sack and tossing a pick to ice the game. Having shown just flashes of brilliance this season, Garoppolo will have to prove he can shoulder a larger load heading into next years campaign.

RB Raheem Mostert rushed 12 times for 58 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for two yards, and RB Tevin Coleman rushed five times for 28 yards and caught one pass for three yards. WR Deebo Samuel caught five passes for 39 yards and rushed three times for 53 yards, WR Emmanuel Sanders caught three of his five targets for 38 yards, and TE George Kittle hauled in four passes for 36 yards. Jan 31 1:20pm ET

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has breezed into the Super Bowl. After attempting just 27 passes in two games, Garoppolo may face a tougher challenge against the Kansas City Chiefs and an electric offense. While Garoppolo has worn the mantra as game manager all season, hes answered the bell when necessary, with four games of three or more touchdowns. With a trustworthy arsenal of weapons in the passing game, Garoppolo shouldnt be ruled out as the biggest potential upside surprise come Sundays contest to determine who reigns supreme in the NFL.

From RotoBaller

Jan 30 12:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo only has attempted 27 passes so far in two postseason games. If the 49ers throw 25 or fewer times in Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, Feb. 2, they'll finish in the top five in terms of fewest pass attempts by a Super Bowl team in a single postseason. Each of the current five teams on the list played in 1974 or earlier, and each of them wound up winning the Super Bowl.

Fantasy Spin: Jimmy G. infamously has thrown for only 208 yards and one TD this postseason, and while the 49ers' running game does match up well with the Chiefs' less-than-stout run defense, count on the 49ers having to air it out more Sunday in order to keep pace with Patrick Mahomes and the explosive K.C. offense. Keep in mind that when the opposition has scored 21 or more points this season (seven games) against the 49ers, Garoppolo has averaged 35.1 passing attempts, 24 completions and 295.9 passing yards per outing.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed just six of eight passes for 77 yards and no scores in the NFC Championship against the Green Bay Packers. Garoppolo had little to do but watch running back Raheem Mostert annihilate the Packers rush defense for 220 yards and four scores. With two consecutive easy victories in the playoffs, Jimmy G has attempted just 27 passes this postseason. Sledding will surely get tougher in the Super Bowl against the red-hot Kansas City Chiefs.
