2019 RTSports Outlook

Sproles injured his hamstring the first game of the season and missed the next 10 games. He was able to return Week 13 and got his chances, having multiple receptions each of the last four games. He even had a team high 13 carries in the Eagles first playoff game. Sproles is 36 years old and struggled with injury each of the last two seasons. You have to wonder if he has anything left. Sproles wants to keep playing, though, and will try to play his usual third-down role. Sproles has been maybe the best third-down or change-of-pace back in the game throughout his career. He fits the role perfectly. Sproles has great speed and moves, but lacks the ideal size to be an every-down back.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:   Sproles is a big risk but if he is active, he has some value in PPR formats as a reserve back. He can get around 400 total yards and 30 receptions with a score or two.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles should have a somewhat consistent role in 2019. He'll work on special teams as a returner, but should also see playing time on offense, splitting passing downs with Corey Clement. Sproles and Clement will eat into one another's fantasy value, but either back would be a solid option if the other were to go down. Sproles should have more value in leagues that count return yards, but at age 36, he's certainly an injury risk.

The Eagles are bringing back running back Darren Sproles for one more season. After playing in just six games last year, it looked like Sproles might be done in the NFL, but the Eagles decided to bring Sproles back to an already crowded backfield that features Jordan Howard, Corey Clement, and Miles Sanders. Clement might be in the most trouble from the Sproles signing, but overall it's looking more and more like this is a running back committee that fantasy owners should stay away from. This move does almost guarantee that either Josh Adams or Wendell Smallwood are cut before the season opens.

Free-agent RB Darren Sproles (Eagles) has been working out with New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and Chicago Bears QB Chase Daniel this offseason. Sproles has not decided if he will play in 2019.

May 30 5:53pm ET

Free-agent RB Darren Sproles (Eagles) has yet to decide about his playing future after previously saying a few months ago he intended to make up his mind sometime in May. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently told 97.5 The Fanatic he believes Sproles will ideally play somewhere he's played before (Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers).

May 30 5:10pm ET

Free-agent running back Darren Sproles, who will turn 36 in June, remains open to playing in 2019, but he might want to play for one of the Eagles, Saints or Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter said on 97.5 the Fanatic. Sproles still has some quickness and elusiveness, but he's only been able to play in nine games the last two years with the Eagles due to injuries. Depending on where he lands, he could be used as a pass-catcher out of the backfield occasionally, but his fantasy prospects would probably be pretty dim.

Apr 1 3:38pm ET

Free-agent running back Darren Sproles said he won't make a decision on whether he'll retire until May. He'll turn 36 in June but has had talks with the Philadelphia Eagles about coming back for one more year. While Sproles could still be useful as a return man and as a pass-catcher out of the backfield, Philly also has Jordan Howard, Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement and Josh Adams. The veteran running back has also been limited to nine games the last two seasons due to lower-body injuries. If he returns for one more year in 2019, Sproles might have some deep-league PPR value.

Free-agent RB Darren Sproles (Eagles) has had some talks with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason but will wait until May before he decides if he wants to continue playing.

Mar 26 1:30pm ET

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson isn't ruling out the return of running back Darren Sproles, who has yet to make a decision on whether he will retire. Sproles is ready to retire, but he's played in nine games the last two seasons and wants to go out on a good note. He ran the ball 29 times for 120 yards and a score while adding 15 receptions for 160 yards and two more touchdowns in his six regular season games in 2018. Even if Sproles returns, his fantasy upside is all but diminished at this point in his career.
